Reagan, for his part, made a strategy of stigmatizing those he withdrew support from, be they the mentally ill, the poor, or those suffering from AIDS, all while distracting the public with promises of a glorious future for everybody else. The problems of the 1970’s don’t go away so much as get swept underneath a golden rug.Gotham City, 1981. This is the year in which Todd Phillips’s Joker takes place.From the advertisements, you would expect Joker to be a 1970’s-style exploitation flick diving into the kind of misery that drives a person to become a mass murderer, culminating in a cathartic bloodbath celebrating the archetype of the isolated loner. If Warner Bros. had made that kind of movie and cast Joaquin Phoenix with a quirky but charismatic turn as the character, one designed for mass appeal, it would likely print just as much money. You’d all but expect them to give him Asperger’s Syndrome and play the autism spectrum card for maximum sympathy. “Look at how society beats up the poor autistic man!”That is frankly not what this movie is. If you walk into the theater expecting that sort of thing, you likely will not leave disappointed, but you certainly will not get what you expected. It delivers something much more thoughtfully constructed, and isn’t especially invested in trying to validate incels or glamorize mass shooters. There is nothing glamorous about Arthur Fleck, and he isn’t simply a well-meaning dope that the world shits on until he snaps. He is deeply mentally ill, and the movie is a psychological thriller seen through the broken lens of his mind as his world and perception of reality both gradually disintegrate. The further into the rabbit hole of Joker’s events you go, the more that questions get raised rather than answered, leaving you wondering what really happened and what were products of Arthur’s own mind. This includes the vulnerable and childlike persona he initially presents, which may be, as it were…. “part of the act.”Aside from being a character study about Arthur’s broken perspective, Joker is also commentary about society’s treatment of the mentally ill. Gotham City seems trapped in a 1970s-era recession. What little support exists for people like Arthur is bare minimum, going through repetitive motions, telling him things he already knows, and doing less to address the fundamental problems in his life and more to try and force him to act “more normal.” Indeed, Gotham’s mental health system is there less to treat, and more to get the mentally ill out of sight and mind for everybody else.This is accompanied by the overshadowing presence of Thomas Wayne as he prepares to campaign for Mayor, echoing the rhetoric of Ronald Reagan as he dismisses the needy, asserting his own value and their worthlessness. Further details in Arthur’s story tie these two figures more closely in a loop of cause-and-effect, the implications of which point a damning, accusatory finger at the privileged mogul.All of this is done in a way that is grounded and sober beyond even what Christopher Nolan did with his Batman trilogy. There are no chemical plants or fatal hand-buzzers, there are no advanced military prototypes taking to the streets, there’s no gas that makes people die laughing. There is simply a man with the mind of an alien trying to make sense of the world around him, all while forces beyond his control, including his own mind, conspire to make him a monster. Yet, in this way Joker never loses sight of the mythological roots of the DC universe, characterizing Arthur’s mental illness in a way that I would liken to Jack Torrance’s descent into madness in The Shining. I will not spoil what happens, but I am convinced that his delusions are not simply delusions, and that Gotham City itself is in some way malevolent. It doesn’t need to levitate things or shoot lightning bolts to be supernatural; it only needs a mind sufficiently deep in the throes of madness to lead on a path to destruction. Unfortunately for the future of Gotham’s citizens, it seems that Arthur Fleck may be the only person in the city who’s in on the joke, and he is the person least equipped to tell it.Then again, interpretations of this movie, like humor, are subjective, and thanks to the unreliable perspective of its lead character, it leaves itself very open to interpretation. The rest that I could highlight come down to praises of craftsmanship, and I will suffice it to say that this is one of the most superb, deliberately constructed movies Warner Bros. has made in years. It makes Nolan’s Batman movies look amateurish.I give Joker a rating of a Full House, Jokers High. Go see it while it’s in theaters. See it with friends, be ready to talk, and please, don’t take the kids to see this particular party clown.
