You are a contract laborer, a person, who owns the equipment necessary to earn a living. You are in the same category as the man who cuts your yard. If you work for the ABC Company, Inc., you’re an employee. They match your FICA withholdings, (Social Security) and deduct the appropriate state and federal taxes to be forwarded to the crooks.You should approach Ubering as you would fishing. Would you catch any fish in the little stream that the little bridge crosses near your house? NO! Then why fish there?If you already don’t have it, download the RIDER app and sign up as a rider.From your home, open the rider app. Are there at least 4 Uber drivers (fishermen) in your vicinity? Do not think of the Uber drivers as competitors, but as you would fishermen in the area of a large lake, not an ocean. If I turn on my rider app at my home located in the western part of Mudflap County, there are NO fishermen showing and they will not be forever.It’s 12 miles to the nearest GOOD fishing hole from my home. I can reach it in 15 minutes.I park in the same Home Depot parking lot; then and only then do I go online. Yesterday I caught my first “fish” in less than 60 seconds. He was less than 1/2 mile from me. I drove over to his location, and reeled him in and delivered him to his destination.After delivering him, I looked at the rider app again, knowing I was still in the area of good fishing. I did not go back to a staging area, neither did I ride around wasting time and gas.I drove to a nearby shopping center, in an area of safety, parking my car, leaving it on, and waited.Within five or six minutes, I had another fish nibbling on my hook.It was about this time that Uber started automatically assigning me pool riders. I hate that! I hate that! I hate that! I have a specific time frame that I want to drive and I don't want to drive anymore.If one of my trips takes me into a bad area of Atlanta, a dangerous area, I immediately go off-line after dropping off the customer.While still offline, I drive from the dangerous area to the nearest safe area, park, going back online. I do not try to chase surge areas.The point is to go where other drivers are, park and wait. Suppose I drive for 4 hours. There is ALWAYS going to be “dead time,” no rider in the car. Even pool drivers will experience this. Suppose that time amounts to one hour out of four. Pick an amount of time of your choosing. Which is better, to drive around aimlessly or park and wait for the hit?I met a man at the Atlanta hub one day and asked how long he had been driving for Uber; it was about the same as I. I asked him if he liked it, if he was making money and how he approached his work.He stated, “I’m loosing money, and my policy is to go to a location where there are no other Uber drivers and drive around that area.”Maybe I should have offered him this suggestion, “Friend, come to my home in the western edge of Mudflap County, park under the shady tree in our backyard, and count the headstones behind the two churches next to our property. I’ll call Kay, tell her to fix you a ham sandwich, chips and Coke, all at no charge. You will save a fortune on lunches!”Gotta go! I'm going to send an email to Goober raising H. E. Double Hockey Stick about automatically scheduling pool riders!One more thing, I NET (take home pay) slightly over $8.00 per hour and save over $1,000 every year on Federal taxes, by Ubering. The pay is “low,” but the workload is lower. I’m retired and Kay has a good retirement. Ron was born at night, but not last night.
