PDF Editor FAQ

Why is the idea that humans evolved to live in water not seen as likely when most other mammals that lost their hair and developed subcutaneous fat are aquatic?

The aquatic ape hypothesis is the concept that the ancestors of humans lost their hair during a period in our early evolutionary history when they lived partly in lakes and rivers. It’s popular on the internet but rests on some entirely false assumptions. It’s an attempt to explain why humans, unlike other primates, are mostly hairless. It’s original version tried to explain several facts about humans that seemed to be inconsistent with life in a hot savanna as depicted here.[1][1][1][1]What’s the evidence for it?Sweating is especially wasteful of water even though water is scarce in the hot savanna. This wouldn’t be a problem for an animal that lived near the water. In addition to losing hair, humans gained a layer of fat beneath the skin, called subcutaneous fat. That’s a lot like dolphins and whales which have lost their hair and insulate themselves with subcutaneous fat. This picture is taken from a larger one showing many supposed adaptations to living in the water. You may want to consult the original article to see the full list of supposed adaptations.[2][2][2][2]What’s wrong with it?Moderate sized Aquatic mammals typically have fur.Small and moderate sized semi-aquatic mammals never become hairless. Otters, beavers, muskrat, mink, coypu, and platypus are all semi-aquatic but still retain their fur.Seals (pinnipeds) are bigger and most retain a short layer of fur like this one.[3][3][3][3] The exception is the walrus, which is only sparsely covered.[4][4][4][4]That’s true even for animals that swim in warm waters like this Hawaiian monk seal.[5][5][5][5] These animals weigh more than 500 pounds. Here’s another aquatic, hairy animal, the capybara.[6][6][6][6]Only very large aquatic animals are mostly hairless. These include hippos, manatees, dolphins, and whales. But some large land animals are also mostly hairless including elephants and rhinos. So, the aquatic ape hypothesis doesn’t explain why our ancestors lost their hair. The most successful semi-aquatic mammal in Africa doesn’t have much subcutaneous fat and doesn’t sweat the way we do.This guy is semi-aquatic and hairless [7][7][7][7] but doesn’t have much fat under the skin (subcutaneous fat) like we do.[8][8][8][8] Nor do they have sweat glands like ours, though they do produce a reddish oily fluid through other means.[9][9][9][9] [10][10][10][10]So, the aquatic ape hypothesis doesn’t explain why our ancestors gained subcutaneous fat or sweat glands.Other evidenceIf look closely at the swimming and floating chart, you will find lots of facts about human anatomy and physiology but none of them require aquatic ancestry. Having flexible arms and shoulders and having long legs would be useful to savannah-living apes just as much as swimming apes. And, what’s more, the chart ignores features you would expect to find in an aquatic animal, like webbed hands and feet. We can’t hold our breath underwater as long as a hippo can.More readingYou can get good critiques here:Why anthropologists don't accept the Aquatic Ape TheorySorry David Attenborough, we didn't evolve from ‘aquatic apes’ – here's whyThese articles defend the idea:The Aquatic Ape Theory--Elaine MorganSea Lions Develop Human-like Vernix Caseosa Delivering Branched Fats and Squalene to the GI Tracthttps://publishing.rcseng.ac.uk/doi/full/10.1308/rcsann.2017.0162Aquatic Ape TheoryFootnotes[1] A Theory of Human Evolution[1] A Theory of Human Evolution[1] A Theory of Human Evolution[1] A Theory of Human Evolution[2] Aquatic Ape Theory[2] Aquatic Ape Theory[2] Aquatic Ape Theory[2] Aquatic Ape Theory[3] Cape Fur Seal Trade Remains Shrouded in Secrecy - Conservation Action Trust[3] Cape Fur Seal Trade Remains Shrouded in Secrecy - Conservation Action Trust[3] Cape Fur Seal Trade Remains Shrouded in Secrecy - Conservation Action Trust[3] Cape Fur Seal Trade Remains Shrouded in Secrecy - Conservation Action Trust[4] Pinniped - Wikipedia[4] Pinniped - Wikipedia[4] Pinniped - Wikipedia[4] Pinniped - Wikipedia[5] Hawaiian Monk Seal | National Geographic[5] Hawaiian Monk Seal | National Geographic[5] Hawaiian Monk Seal | National Geographic[5] Hawaiian Monk Seal | National Geographic[6] 10 Facts About Capybaras: The World’s Largest Rodents[6] 10 Facts About Capybaras: The World’s Largest Rodents[6] 10 Facts About Capybaras: The World’s Largest Rodents[6] 10 Facts About Capybaras: The World’s Largest Rodents[7] Hippopotamus Facts, Worksheets & Information for Kids[7] Hippopotamus Facts, Worksheets & Information for Kids[7] Hippopotamus Facts, Worksheets & Information for Kids[7] Hippopotamus Facts, Worksheets & Information for Kids[8] Hippopotamus - Wikipedia[8] Hippopotamus - Wikipedia[8] Hippopotamus - Wikipedia[8] Hippopotamus - Wikipedia[9] San Diego Zoo Animals & Plants[9] San Diego Zoo Animals & Plants[9] San Diego Zoo Animals & Plants[9] San Diego Zoo Animals & Plants[10] Do hippopotamuses actually have pink sweat?[10] Do hippopotamuses actually have pink sweat?[10] Do hippopotamuses actually have pink sweat?[10] Do hippopotamuses actually have pink sweat?

Major Concepts in Education: What is the need of CCE in CBSE?

as a student forced 2 suffer under this system...I would like 2 tell everyone here that the cce is just another example of how good we Indians have become at mindlessly aping the western system of things and forcing it down our own throats....of how good we have become at doing things half-heartedly.....what the cce has basically resulted in is listed below....-4 (internal) board exams instead of just one...(I.e the half term and end term exams of both 9th and tenth, instead of just the single exam given at the end of tenth in the previous system- and then they call it stress reduction!!!-teachers rushing through syllabus without fully clearing concepts of students so that assignments, worksheets, projects, etc. can be given which carry grades...-Now, the main reason why everybody claims that the cce reduces stress is becoz it allows the bad students to have an easy time in class..just make a pretty looking project (the teacher doesn't really have the time to individually go through each of the 40-50 projects), raise your hand in class occasionally (you get MARKS!! and not just grades, for "participation" ) and you'll pass....never mind that you flunk the exams...-The weightage given to the co-curricular section is pretty good and was long due...but just imagine..since everything -from dance music yoga and sports to art and craft carries MARKS!! how tensed the students end up. I mean,is it my fault that I was not blessed with musical talent but am better at dance...or that I cant draw as well as i run...so even if i get an A+ in dance( which translates into 20 marks!!) i get a B or a C in everything else and that ruins my cgpa...We've seen students in our school who went into chronic depression because they got a 9.6 instead of a 10 and hence were not allowed 2 take their chosen streams in 11th.....how absurd is this system which does not allow a science loving student 2 take science in 11th just because he lost a few points in say, sports ,or yoga or art and craft-This system does not prepare us one bit for the real competition that we will shortly face as we make our way into the harsh world of competitive exams-since the IITs or DU wont give me admission on the basis of my "neatness" or"punctuality" and the education i get there will not be assesed formatively, what is the use of providing such a system...more time should instead be spent on clearing concepts and doubts but that rarely takes place when you try to cut and paste a system suited for western schools with an average class size of 20-30 in an indian classroom where it is atleast 40...when the teacher apart from checking notebooks also has the added burden of checking assesment, project, worksheets, homework aaignments, etc, etc, how can one expect her 2 teach well..- well, in the end i must say, as i rush 2 complete my holiday homework which will be graded on Monday and marked on Tuesday, that unless we realise that all we have done is take one step forward and four steps backward, unless we stop introducing some new test or assessment every other week., unless we take our education system very seriously, we are going 2 have some serious problems as our generation, born after the liberalisation of the economy, after the software boom and used 2 having everything easy, learning levels in this country will continue to drop, and india will lose its place in the world, forget becoing the next global superpower.

What are the practical questions interview for the tableau developer?

Having hired a number of high quality (good and great!) Tableau developers (and interviewed quite a few more) I can share my approach…“Show me examples of your work / your Tableau Public portfolio”Every Tableau developer who wants to demonstrate his/her capability should have one or more examples of their work (on any subject) available, or on Tableau Public. Anyone without work on Tableau Public is either:Incompetent - they don’t have any work worth publishingLazy - they haven’t taken the time to produce a showcase viz or dashboarda + b“Show me your Tableau Community profile, and how you work with the community”Every competent Tableau developer has both posed and answered questions on the Community - even if this is infrequent.“Talk me through your design and build process”All good Tableau developers can explain their work in several phases, using terminology like:Exploration = establishing data syntax- rapid fire worksheet creation and destruction, exploring the nature / shape / scope of the dataSense-making = establishing data context- comparison of data elements, combining dimensions and measures, exploring change over time, experimenting with relationshipsBlending = combining data- joining multiple source ‘tables’, blending across data sourcesVisualisation = conveying information visually- experimenting with visual forms to best represent observed patternsInteractivity = encouraging audience exploration of information- combining visualisations to encourage the intended audience to explore the data in some way, helping them develop their own understanding“Show me all of this, by working with this data set”The acid test is watching someone work with an unfamiliar data set, to see whether everything described above is real. If you have a data set that you know well, ask your potential Tableau developer to work with it:Poor candidates will looks concerned, flounder a little and make a series of excuses as to why the data is different from that which they are used to. Avoid.Adequate candidates will wade in, create some standard visualisations (misinterpreting some of the data), connect a few together and show potential dashboard content… my advice = again, avoid.Good candidates will engage with the data, ask questions to develop a contextual understanding, suggest options and ask for your preference, build interesting and thoughtful visualisations which the can combine, fairly quickly, into interesting prototype dashboards… the look and feel may be a little rough, but the thought process will be solid and the visual approach strong and interesting - consider hiring.Great candidates will smile, with a glint in their eye - suddenly, they are in their element as their inherent curiosity is unleashed. They will explore and challenge the data. They will highlight inconsistencies and issues (some of which you may have been unaware of!). They will create visuals at speed - keeping some, discarding others, often with a running commentary. They will assemble dashboards in a way that makes you smile - either because it apes your style, or because they show you a new way of tackling a problem which you hadn’t considered. You will know inside 15 minutes of watching them work that they are a Great Candidate. Hire immediately!I hope that helps?!
