As a parent, what did your child's school do that made you say "you can't be serious…"?

My younger step-daughter went on a field trip to the local Red Cross offices with her fifth-grade class and returned with a “gimme” backpack which she stuffed in her locker at school without a thought.A week later a young woman a year ahead of her in school was having menstrual cramps and didn’t have any aspirin or Tylenol for it so she opened my step-daughter’s locker in her absence, rooted around in there and found a small packet of aspirin in the Red Cross backpack and took it (not just a couple of aspirin, the whole packet of aspirin). She took another dose towards the end of the day and a teacher caught her and sent her to the principal’s office for “drug use”.When asked where she got the “drugs,” she said from <my step-daughter’s name>’s locker. We were called to the school to meet with the principal and were told that my step-daughter would be suspended for a week for “bringing drugs to school” and “drug distribution” under their “zero tolerance” policy.I pointed out that she wasn’t aware that there were drugs in the backpack that she’d gotten during a sanctioned school field trip and she hadn’t distributed the drugs so much as the other girl had stolen them from her.It didn’t matter. The thief wasn’t even reprimanded (black, female, with a VERY loud mother who raised a stink). My daughter was suspended from school for a week and my wife had to take a week off to stay with her (not a “woman” thing — my job paid about 10 times what hers did and we couldn’t afford for me to take that much time off).Ridiculous in the extreme. No other student was suspended for “bringing drugs to school” even though there were about 30 of those backpacks still there (they confiscated them). No teacher was reprimanded for not clearing the backpacks or making sure the Red Cross knew the school rules.Only my daughter, the victim of a theft, was punished.Edit: I should probably have pointed out that this was 20 years ago. There’s no point in pursuing legal action now. Also, there IS no “permanent record” that comes out of the school system and follows you through life. Step-daughter has had her legal problems (shoplifting, mostly because she just picked the worst friends and felt the need to go along) but no one anywhere has a clue that she was suspended for a week in 5th grade because someone stole aspirin from a backpack obtained on a school-sanctioned field trip to the Red Cross.

Have you ever been confronted for wearing something inappropriate in a swimming pool?

Yes, by my own teacher.I was ten years old and in grade four, and my class went on an end-of-year field trip to Happy Valley, a recreational park just outside our city limits. One of its main attractions was a large swimming pool. I was very excited…I loved swimming and goofing around in the water.I emerged from the dressing room in the two-piece swimsuit I always wore. It was not a bikini…the bottoms went up to my waist, not even revealing my navel, and the top fully covered my chest, which had not yet begun to develop. My teacher, who was a nun, made her way around that pool in seconds flat, dragged me back into the dressing room and shamed me so badly for my exhibitionism and lack of modesty that she reduced me to tears.I ran from her, dived into the water and cowered in the deep end with the water up to my chin until pool time was over. That’s when the s*** hit the fan…she had shamed me so badly I refused to come out of the water. The lifeguard had to “rescue” me, and I had a total meltdown complete with kicking and screaming. No-one could figure out why I was upset, because I was completely incoherent…that fool of a nun had convinced me I was pretty much naked, and all of my classmates had seen me that way. It took her and all three of the parent chaperones to get me onto the bus to go home.To say my parents were unhappy would be a huge understatement…my mother arrived in the principal’s office first thing the next morning. I had flatly refused to go to school, and told mom I was never ever going to school again as long as I lived. Everybody had seen me almost naked…my life was over. The principal, who was a sensible man, was shocked…he called the teacher into the office, and let my mother loose on her. Mom was a very articulate woman, and a feminist. I still regret not being a fly on the wall during that meeting. My mother received an apology…I did not. It was considered bad for discipline if a teacher was seen to apologize to a student. My mom spent the rest of that day convincing me that I had not been almost naked, that my bathing suit was perfectly decent, and that I had nothing to be ashamed of. I did return to school for the few days that remained before summer, and the nun’s teaching contract was not renewed for the following year, so I never saw her again. But I did hear that she left the convent a few years later.Edit: I’ve since come to believe that the teacher’s appalling over-reaction to the sight of my slightly tubby ten-year-old midriff was a sign that she was already experiencing a crisis of faith.
