Programmers, what is the most inefficient process used by other departments in your company that you could automate if asked?

I don't know whether it's the most inefficient process, but it was *an* inefficient process. When I worked for a retail corporation, we sold widgets out of our city desks, but we also did a lot of delivery and bill-to-account work. Every afternoon around 2 pm, I would hear this beep... beep... beep... noise from outside my door. One day I decided to investigate it.It was the receptionist in the office area. She had our "Mark-Delivered" screen up, and was filling in each of the order numbers by using a handheld scanner connected to the PC, and scanning each of the Proof-of-Delivery documents' barcodes. Each time it scanned, the handheld would beep and send the order number plus a tab to the application. When she had a page full, she'd hit the transmit key, which would change the status of the entered orders to Delivered, which would make them eligible for billing during that night's batch runs. It took about 1.5 to 2 seconds to press the handheld's trigger, position the aperture to capture the barcode, register the barcode in the scanner, beep, send the data to the program and flip the page. 1.5 to 2 seconds per order, and we processed anywhere from 3000 to 5000 orders a day. Sometimes more.Now. That's a manual process, and a pretty inefficient one, isn't it? But wait, it gets better. After she finished scanning the day's orders for billing, then she had to scan them for the credit department. See, some of the people who order material from us, receive it, and get billed for it, will call us later and complain about their bill because they never ordered thus-and-such, and certainly never received it! The AR people used to have to tell them they'd look into it, and terminate the conversation. Then go to a bank of file cabinets, find the account in question, find the paper document, make a copy of it and mail it to the disgruntled customer. I had previously improved that process by purchasing a handful of sheet-fed page scanners and the ImageNow software package, so when the customer calls, the AR person just needed to open a WebNow window, type in the customer's id, type in the order number in question, look at the image of the Proof-of-Delivery to make sure it has a signature, then press a button to email it to the person she's speaking with, then ask, "Is that your signature at the bottom of this form?"See, ImageNow (I am just a happy customer, and have no affiliation whatsoever with the company) scans the document, recognizes the barcode, and translates it to index the document automatically in its database. Which was a SQLServer database on a Windows server, not a DMSII database on a Unisys ClearPath server, but I was smelling blood by this point. I went back to my office and in about a half hour, wrote and tested a trigger that, for each Proof-of-Delivery document scanned in ImageNow, entered a row in a custom table consisting just of the order number. Then I took about 15 minutes to write a JavaScript program to harvest those order numbers, dump them into a flat file and drain the table, and FTP the file to the Unisys server. Finally, I took another fifteen minutes to write a program in the Unisys side to read that file, mark all the orders Delivered, and archive the file. The result: the receptionist could completely eliminate the hand-scanning procedure she was doing every afternoon. For the next week I tested the system by harvesting the daily ImageNow scans and sending the file to our test environment and marking them delivered there. Each day I took 10-15 minutes to compare what had got marked as delivered by my system to what had been marked as delivered in production, and chasing down discrepancies. In every case, the discrepancies were attributable to a smudged, unreadable barcode that had to be hand-keyed. Hand-keying had to be done in both the hand-scanning and the ImageNow processes, so it's not surprising that we'd have a few discrepancies in either side. More of the problems were on the hand scanning side, though, since for those, you had to interrupt the manual flow to type in the order number, where in the ImageNow process, the automated process read all the barcodes it could, then popped up a dialog to ask for assistance decoding the ones it couldn't read--i.e., rather than an interruption of the process, it was part of the organic flow.Granted, the receptionist was paid maybe a quarter of my salary, but realize that it took me about one hour to develop this system and about an hour to test it for a week, and it would save her an hour or two every day. I've written a number of labor- and time-saving programs, but few of them have had a 1-2 week payback period!Anyone who has worked in IT in Corporate America knows how this story ends.I presented the idea to my director. He said he didn't think it would work. I showed him the results of my testing. He said he didn't think AR would accept a hands-off billing process: too many opportunities for something to go wrong. I suspect the bottom line was really that they hired this receptionist full-time, but she really didn't have much to do in the afternoons, and they needed something to give her on a regular basis to fill her time.
