Macs require less maintenance. I used to work at Microsoft, so it pains me to say this, but it is a bear to maintain a PC, even as a developer. Things like DLL Hell can lead to hours of frustration trying to figure out why the wrong library is loading.OSX is based off of FreeBSD, a Unix-like OS. Since most startups are deploying to Linux servers (another Unix-like OS), it benefits them to have similar environments in production and development. This makes it easier to run the same code on your laptop as you're deploying to production, and all of your tools work. No Cygwin needed. Everytime I touch a Windows laptop I am completely thrown off by their terrible command line interface.Mostly due to part 2, there are more good open source developer tools available for OSX than windows. For example, Node.JS didn't work on Windows until v 0.6, which was 2 years into the project.

In my experience, it’s probably not most programmers that prefer dark themes. Of those that do there are a variety of reasons for it. Some just find it more comfortable on the eyes. Some find it more exciting … they just enjoy a bright colour against a black background. Maybe it taps into the same part of our minds that enjoys fireworks at night, or gazing at the moon or at fires.Probably our ancient ancestors spent a lot of time gazing at fires in the dark, talking and thinking. That fascination with bright colours and dark backgrounds seems to be a part of human nature. It tends to draw you into the thing you’re looking at.I prefer lighter-coloured themes. I find it easier to make out what’s where, and you need to be able to do that if you’re using anything other than a command line. It also gives me more of a feeling of being actually in the world, and not solely in the land of code. I find codeland a little too absorbing, to the point of being unpleasantly isolating. I think many programmers compensate for that by listening to music while they code.

This is my current setup:Unlike many other programmers I opted-out of using multiple large monitors and decided to go with just my built-in laptop screen and an iPad Mini as a second screen connected via Duet Display and sticked to my laptop screen using a very handy Mountie Clip. I’m using a wireless headset and a wireless mouse because cables suck. I only use a wired keyboard because I haven’t found a decent bluetooth keyboard when I was looking for one.I’ve been working as a freelance developer for several years now and I change my working environment really often. I work from home, I work from train for several hours at least twice a week and I work from different clients’ offices almost daily. So I sometimes have 2 large monitors available for use, sometimes I have only 1 and sometimes the only display I have available is my laptop itself.These often changing environments stressed me so much that one day I decided to bring some consistency to my everyday life as programmer.After a few days of unfamiliarity I really fell in love with my setup because it’s completely portable, it even works in a train (except from the laptop stand and the external keyboard, which is fine for me) and I really perceive it as a huge advantage to not getting distracted from work so easily anymore because I don’t have obtrusively blinking notifications on 3 different screens anymore.Oh, and I prefer espresso (without sweeteners) over cappuccino, latte or any other coffee so a cup of espresso is usually part of my desk. At least once a day, usually in the morning.
