While there might a negligible difference in statistics of people transferring to Cal from community colleges closer to Berkeley, a far, far more important consideration when choosing a community college is how well it will enable you to perform at your absolute best. If you come out of Berkeley City College with “C”s, in a major you aren't passionate about, your school’s relationship with Cal won't be enough to earn you admission. If you attend a school with a stellar department for your major that offers the professors, environment, staff, and extracurricular opportunities that give you the tools to be a top-performing student and campus citizen, it won't matter which CCC you come from. They are all connected to the UC system through Welcome to ASSIST and will all provide you with a shot at one of the spots Cal specifically reserves for CCC students - your only job is to earn that spot with your hard work and self. I was accepted to Cal from a rural community college in a military area that has a stunningly low transfer and graduation rate, but the kind professors and staff empowered me to take control of my education. My college didn't make a difference, but my grades, essays, and extracurriculars did.

DVC, DeAnza college, Mission college, La Positas college. These are some of the best community colleges in NoCal. Speaking of saving money, I’d recommend attending a college college in SoCal as rent is too high in NoCal.

This isn’t a reasonable comparison. One school offers every degree from bachelor’s to PhD. The other offers 100- and 200–level undergraduate courses. These courses are often transferable, but no community college can guarantee that their courses are transferable anywhere.As with others, my suspicion is that you were not admitted to one of a small number of UC schools to which you applied, and you were admitted to Iowa State, so now the choice is between staying local at a community college and going to Iowa State. This wouldn’t be surprising; if you applied to, say, UCLA and UC Berkeley, then your chances weren’t great.These assumptions for us to ask, “If you go to community college, what next?” The public, in-state choices are to transfer to UC or Cal State/Cal Poly schools. All of these schools admit significant number of community college transfers from in-state students. They are required to. There are so many excellent schools between the two systems that I can’t imagine why anyone in California would willingly pay out-of-state tuition elsewhere if they were admitted to an appropriate school.Assuming this is the case, I would tend to point you to Iowa State. I love community colleges, and California has some of the best, but they don’t have the resources that Iowa State will. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve had students who came in with an associate’s degree full of “gen eds”, and no progress toward a degree, who were looking at 3 years of coursework after they transferred. This is somewhat specific to computer science (and any heavily sequenced major), but I’ve seen 2+2 turn into 3+3 in a heartbeat. Potentially excellent college students have been turned to mush by low expectations at community colleges, or by living at home when they needed to get away and become adults. This is not to say that all experiences follow this path, but many do.Fortunately, if you do choose a California community college, they offer a great education.A note on costs: I don’t think the numbers presented in answers here are necessarily very useful.
