One is that you ‘buy semen’ with no guarantee at all, at the other end of the spectrum is a guaranteed live foal birth. Some guarantee there will be a live foal on the ground, others guarantee the foal will stand and nurse the mare.The more the guarantee promises, usually, the higher the fee.Initially the mare is evaluated for ‘breeding soundness.’ It’s wise to culture the uterus for infection (some mares have low-level infections without obvious symptoms), and check for abnormal follicles, follicle tumors, and so on. She may need treatment before she’s bred to make sure the uterus is in as good a condition as possible.Cost? So, for example, I paid $2500 when I had my mare bred. The guarantee was pretty decent. I think there was a live foal guarantee. There are stallions that cost far more than that for a breeding.Generally, the breeder will use lights to try to encourage the mares to come in heat as early as possible in the spring.
