PDF Editor FAQ

What would be the point of a draft in the U.S.A if we'd be drafting untrained people to be soldiers?

Regardless of the intent of the draft the out come is that when you draft ordinary people into the military you end up with a civilian populated military. This is a good thing in the long run. When every citizen has a brother, father, mother, sister, cousins, next door neighbor in the line of Fire we all take an much stronger interest in how our military and by virtue of the draft our beloveds are used in lethal situations. This is why during the Vietnam Nam war so many US citizens took to the streets and protested the war.If you ask the average person on the street today if they know anyone who is serving in the military they’d say “no”.It’s also important to have fresh ideas and perspectives in the military from all walks of life. The more diversity you bring to any organization the better. We now have a military that is comprised of disadvantaged young people who have a great desire to get an education and can’t afford it without the GI Bill, young people who can’t get a job otherwise, and folks who want to just be soldiers for a variety of reasons. Some because they like the idea of serving others, some because the like a hierarchical society with strong rules, and folks who like the idea of being professional killers.Sadly we now have a military that is professional, or mercenary. Much of our military officer class are very conservative Christians who like an organization that considers lying and adultery a Courts Marshall offense that can ruin a career and lead to punishment. They have a very black and white rigid concept of the world. So we have an officer class in our professional military that is very politically conservative and evangelical. A politicized professional military? That’s a bad thing. Can you say “Military Coup?”Also the military is having issues getting young folks off the streets of America to step up and join and so the result is lowering of standards for the new recruits. So at the extreme ends of the spectrum we have rigid patriarchal bible thumpers and street thugs and losers. In between are many many fine folks who just want to serve or get a college degree. Also as a person who makes her living off of the Uber wealthy I now have seen 2 generations of young people who have never ever met, worked with or socialized with any one out side of their own class. Let alone ever make a bed, cleaned a toilet, or been forced to do anything they don’t like. The same holds true for all classes of people in the US. In the days of the draft rich, poor, left leaning, right leaning folks from all walks of life were ripped out of there comfort zones and thrust into living, eatting, bathing, working, shitting, and getting shot at with folks from all walks of life. Most importantly they all learned the concept of service to others too and the deep value of comradeship with others unlike themselves. When you have highly intelligent, well trained soldiers trying to kill you as fast as they can you will need your buddies and they need you regardless of their socio economic, racial, religious, or political ideologies.I feel that one of the reasons we have such a stratified society in America now is because we no longer have a draft. The young wealthy in our country have never been exposed to anyone else and thus have little or no empathy for others out side their class. Most of our political class come from privileged lives and have never personally known any poor people or folks of color other than their paid servants let alone served, worked, and endured life threatening circumstances with them. We have under privileged kids who have never known anyone outside of their class either.I firmly believe that we need to institute a “draft” or mandatory service of our 18 year olds. Both male and female. If they object to military service, fine. They can work in nursing homes wiping old people’s butts, carving out trails in the wilderness of out parks, serve the poor, teaching little kids to read, etc. Serve two years and get credits towards paying for an education that only the rich can afford. This will help level the playing field going into the future. We now have two generations of only children who have never had to learn to share, fight, and resolved conflicts with their siblings and who have had helicopter parents do everything for them. Not a good formula for a healthy society going forward.
