PDF Editor FAQ

To those that had/have cancer, what were the signs that made you think “something is not right here” to make you go see a doctor?

In my 60s I was often tired but never could figure out why. I had regular checkups and blood work. One day while looking through lab results I noticed my iron was always low a percent above or below the minimum. I asked my doctor if this could be the issue and she said doesn’t hurt to look. This seemingly insignificant test result and my doctors willingness to look further saved my live. The first thing they look for in cases like this is internal blood loss. I had no other symptoms so the go an upper and lower GI and discover a blockage in my intestine. Again I have no symptoms. They were unable to get a biopsy and said no matter what is is it needs to come. A substantial carcinoid tumor that included my appendix and 6 inches of small and large intestines was removed. It was cancer. They got good margins and 6 years later I remain cancer free. The best advice I can share is to not ignore even the most minor of symptoms.the

What's the most inexplicable experience you've ever had, whether supernatural, paranormal, bizarre coincidence, mysterious intuition, prophetic dream, or unexpected lab result?

For a while I had a feeling the ceiling above the kitchen sink was going to fall as I noticed a minor crack.I always looked at the crack and said "Please, don't fall on anyone, be good, we are going to repair you".So, this day I went to the kitchen to wash the dishes and I prayed that it shouldn't fall on anyone's head. I had a strange feeling in me as I washed the dishes. After I was done washing, I gazed at the ceiling and mumbled "thank you for not falling on me, good boy, now you can fall down", and at that very instant it collapsed.I felt a bit strange. It could have fallen on my head. Was it following my command? Was it really listening to what I said? I don't know, but I was just thankful.

Do people really wait months to see a doctor in countries with socialized medicine?

Anectodal time! I’m from Denmark so, from an American perspective, it probably doesn’t get much more socialized than that - hopefully, this qualifies me to answer your question.Back in 2014, I had a birthmark on my arm that had started to get irritated and scabbed, the skin around it got discoloured. I didn’t think much of it but figured I’d better book an appointment with my doctor Nick just to be on the safe side - I checked into the healthcare system online and found the next available time at Nick was some 14 days away (usually it’s only 3 – 7 days if I book online and same day if I make a phone call) but it was no biggie so I used the online booking…. Apparently it was a biggie.About an hour after I booked my appointment I had a digital message waiting for me in the system asking me to call them immediately and reschedule for an earlier appointment. I was at work so I hadn’t noticed the message even though I got a notification on both my phone and email. Half an hour later Nick personally calls me directly at work and informs me that I need to come in earlier. I’ve never tried that so I was caught a bit unawares and replied ‘okay, how much earlier are we talking?’.Ninety minutes later I was at Nick’s office, drenched in sweat from having pedaled so fast to get there on time after having cut a meeting short. Nick took one look at the birthmark and asked a few questions about how irritated it was and how long ago it had started. He concluded that in all likelihood I had just scratched the birthmark in my sleep and that caused the scabbing/irritation… But he couldn’t be certain it wasn’t a sign of skin cancer so he referred my case to a dermatologist (we just call them skin doctors here in Denmark). I had to call and schedule my own appointment, but at the press of a button, the dermatologist had all available medical data about me so I didn’t have to explain why I was calling.I called the dermatologist’s office; while on hold the automatic message informed me that there was an on-average wait time of four months from when you called till you got an appointment. I remember chuckling a bit nervously and wondering what all the fuss was about with Nick if I had to wait four months anyway. A nice secretary picks up the phone, I give my Social Security number and she informs me to turn up tomorrow before noon.At this point, I started getting very nervous. Specialist doctors have notorious long waiting lists for non-threatening diseases here in Denmark. So this clearly wasn’t a non-threatening disease. Nick had mentioned that the rush was due to the type of cancer my symptoms were indicative of, but the importance of that didn’t hit home till I realized just how swiftly I was being fast-tracked through our healthcare system. I googled it and found a similar chart to the one below, mine was a combination of category C and E.Less than 24 hours after the visit to Nick, I was sitting with the dermatologist who examined the birthmark/scabbing. He arrived at the same conclusion as my doctor, but per standard protocol, he took a sample and sent it off to the lab for testing because he couldn’t be a 100% sure. He then asked me if I wished to wait for the lab result or just have it removed right away to be on the safe side (which he recommended as the birthmark wasn’t located on a prominent feature… like my face). I’m a big fan of experts so I followed his recommendation. I was moved into an adjacent room where a nurse administered a local anaesthetic, they removed the birthmark, stitched me up, and then sent me home. All in all, it took less than an hour.I don’t remember exactly how long I had to wait for the lab result, maybe 48 hours? It came back negative so that was a huge relief, but I got a pretty little scar on my left arm to remind me of the efficiency of our healthcare system.Best of all? I didn’t pay a dime out of my pocket, it’s all taken care of via taxes whether I’m sick or not, preexisting conditions aren’t a thing here. Nor did I have to take time off work as acute medical appointments are covered by legislation, so I was still on the clock and didn’t have to worry about that aspect either.I live in a relatively big city (disclaimer: it’s Denmark, everything is relatively small here) and there was a waiting list of six months to the local ophthalmologist (eye doctor), but it wasn’t urgent - I opted to use another ophthalmologist who was a 30-minute drive away as that reduced the wait time from six to three months. It should tell you all you need to know about the lack of urgency for those of us on the waiting list when you can reduce it by half with just a simple 30-minute drive and people would still rather wait so much longer. If people on the waiting list were uneasy about having to wait, they’d drive those 30 minutes more, we’ve got decent public transport so it wouldn’t be an issue even if you don’t have a car. It’s true that we often have to wait because most often it’s not urgent and so it can wait. A regular visit to my doctor is usually anywhere between three to seven days of waiting if you book online or same day if you make a phone call, and specialists can be up to half a year — but that’s only if you can’t take a 30-minute drive (fun fact, you’ll still be paid as if you were at work during transport to and from your medical appointment too — it’s not just the appointment). But if you describe any symptoms that are classified as urgent, you’ll get fast-tracked through the system so swiftly it will leave you genuinely nervous for what might be wrong with you to warrant such alacrity.
