Are police officers more likely to be in favor of gun control?

I will only answer based on my interactions with the law enforcement officers I have encountered. In my time at my school I have worked with three different School Resource Officers. These are fully sworn city police officers that are assigned to the high school for much of the day but are available at any time to respond to emergencies in the community. Much of their time at school is law enforcement related activities with students who violate state laws, these mostly include bringing guns or other weapons to school, drug related crimes (possession, selling, under the influence) sex crimes (yes rape happens on suburban high school campuses), assaults, (you would be surprised how many parents assault teachers and administrators), and gang related crimes. Only one of the two is in favor of strict gun control. She justifies it by all the guns she confiscates from students (mostly our gangbangers) and the few from the kids who give the excuse they are afraid of being assaulted at school or going to or from school that they take their parent’s gun without permission to carry at school and it breaks her heart to have to arrest these kids. If civilians did not own guns this would not happen. She also admits she does not like shooting her issued firearm and does the minimal amount of range time to stay qualified. The other two I worked with are for private citizens owning guns and being able to get concealed carry permits with self-defense as good cause. CA is a may issue state generally the Sheriff of each county is in charge of issuing permits. Permits are only issued for good cause and it is up to each Sheriff to determine what is good cause. Some counties are effectively no issue and some are effectively shall issue and others are somewhere in-between.I spend a month each summer on the east side in a rural county for fishing, hiking, and relaxing. I have spoken to the Sheriff many times. He likes to eat at the same dinner at the resort I stay at and he is very friendly. He does not enforce all the stupid gun control laws coming out of Crapamento (his words), because they are 8 hours and a world away. His county is the third largest in the state with the lowest population. He has about 15 deputies to cover a county that is 200 miles long and 60 miles wide. The economy is 90% tourism and in winter nearly every business is closed, including the only gun store in the county. In the middle of winter it can take 5 hours one way to get to the nearest gun store to do the background check to legally transfer a gun between two private parties. That is because several highways are closed in the winter due to snow. Then the buyer has to go back 10 days later. He refuses to make people do that. So they just sell to each other without going through the background check. There is a voluntary registration form one can fill out to voluntarily register a gun with a state and by law, this form cannot be used to prosecute someone for violating a gun law. It is meant to be for people who realize they made a mistake sometime ago because they did not know the laws changed and so they can fix it and all will be good. He tells people to just fill that out and send it in. Once it goes in, the county DA has agreed to not prosecute for violating the gun laws.I have met several patrol cops at my local gun range. Every one I have spoken with has no issue with citizens owning guns for self-defense. They will not enforce the law against magazines over 10 rounds, unless it is to add extra charges for a criminal. They are frustrated that they arrest a criminal for a violent crime and they are out of jail without having to post bail, before the officer has completed the paperwork. The jails and prisons are so overcrowded. Recently we had a situation where a suspected was arrested for the rape and murder of a young woman and he had been arrested over the previous 6 months on 4 separate occasions for violent rapes and each time was let out without bail pending trial. The jail was overcrowded. The laws are not being enforced and the politicians are pushing gun bans and background checks to buy ammo as the solution to crime and yet they are letting criminals out of prison early, reclassifying violent felonies to be non-violent felonies so the sentence is just probation and pushing for jail sentences of a few weeks rather than years. We just need to show the criminals decency and humanity and they will change their ways. We need gun control though because gun crime is getting out of control. Now a story from a trip I took out of state a couple of years ago. I was in Montana around July 4th. I was watching the local news when a PSA came on. Having been a resident of CA for over 50 years and regularly traveling out of state, and having friends and family living in adjacent states, I am well aware of the Californian jokes and some of the anti-Californian biases. I understand it and I laugh about it because like many stereotypes, there is a little truth behind it.The last part of this PSA was directed to the friends from CA visiting Montana. It reminded them that the majority of households in MT have loaded guns for self-defense and Montanans are very proficient. There are not many law enforcement officers like CA so Montanans tend to be self-sufficient. Do not enter a residence uninvited because there is a good chance you will be leaving on a gurney. If you are more than 15 minutes outside the city, you will be leaving in a body bag. Your family will not be able to sue in civil court if it was ruled a good shoot. The fact that you were where you were not supposed to be is all is needed to rule it was a good shoot. Then that lead to the next story of two meth heads from CA breaking into a cabin in the woods trying to rob an elderly couple and they meth heads left in body bags.
