Amused and a little annoyed. I would probably call the school and clarify that fathers were welcome, and ask politely why the letter had been written that way. I doubt I'd need to launch into a Big Feminist Lecture, but I might point out that I found it confusing that they wouldn't encourage fathers to come, too.

I've only once encountered a PTA that worked to increase family engagement with the school - in my experience PTAs have always worked to increase family engagement with the PTA and its various projects.On that one occasion the officers of the PTA wrote a letter to the school's families inviting their input on playground and lunchroom supervision - and their general concerns about bullying and that angered the faculty - and even some of the parents - who thought the PTA should not be discussing school matters... but the next PTA meeting after the letter went out was the Best Attended PTA meeting in the PTA's history. Every teacher showed up - although they were there to shut down discussion rather than foster it - and many parents showed up.Many families these days are working as hard as they can just to get through the days. Many typical PTA events are fundraisers of one sort or another and families don't feel drawn to help with the many fundraisers.Could a PTA ever participate in hiring? Could there be a Parents' Council who gets to interview prospective teachers and offer input? If PTA were able to do more ... Consider the constituencies of a school - the faculty is often organized into a union, the school boards have their own organization - who is there to speak for the students? Who advocates for students' needs? Who plans the lunch menus and are parents or the PTA any part of the decisions as to what's offered to the children in the cafeteria?What that long-ago PTA wanted to do was have teachers present on the playground and in the lunch room - rather than part-time aides hired for those brief time slots. Better schools treat lunchtime and recess as important to the children's welfare and have faculty overseeing the children's interactions at lunch and recess.Family interest and engagement increased on the one occasion that the PTA took on issues that matter - when they tried to advocate for the children - and moved past fundraisers.

You can teach your children to be sensitive to people who are different than they are.You can raise awareness in those who are close to you, for example, your friends and family.You might arrange for a licensed mental health provider to speak at your child’s PTA meeting, or at a church function.When each school has its days where all the parents come in to talk with the teachers about their childrens’ scholastic performance, have people from different local organizations that treat a different aspect of mental illness, set up a table. Advertise this in the letter going out to parents, in the papers, etc.You might organize a silent auction or a benefit in your community to raise awareness about mental health issues, inviting local representation from different providers and different organizations which deal with different aspects of mental health, to set up a table.for example, someone who can speak about eating disorders, its treatments and treatment locations and costs, who has books there on the topic, other pamphlets on it’s symptoms.you can invite representatives from treatment of other mental illnesses, i.e. ADHD, Depression, Schizophrenia, Bipolar, Each 12 step program (AA, NA, GA,) (also something on sex abuse and sex trafficing too, so parents will become more aware of situations as well as symptoms.)advertise by placing fliers at places like Starbucks, churches, YMCAs, other community centers, schools, in the newspapers, and other city-wide publications.Maybe start something like “A Night of a Thousand Stars,” for mental illness awareness. That would be great, if it could go national, even international. (Sky’s the limit.)
