Q: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has expressed interest in joining NATO. If Ukraine makes a formal application, should it be accepted? If they do join, what would be the potential benefits and drawbacks, both for Ukraine and for NATO?A: NATO will not consider membership application from a country that has an ongoing conflict, active or frozen. Just because Ukraine wants to join, it doesn’t mean NATO will accept it. Ever wonder why Russia took only Crimea without Donbas? Donbas must be parked under Ukraine to make Ukraine a country in conflict!If I were to declare I want to marry the prettiest woman in town, will I get anywhere if she doesn’t say yes as well?I am sure Zelenskiy or any one of his predecessors are fully aware of what it takes to join NATO too. The reason they keep talking about it, even though it’s essentially impossible, is to rally political support. No more and no less. Even if the Donbas conflict can be resolved, Russia will simply create another conflict region in Ukraine! Given Ukraine’s size and population, Russia simply wouldn’t tolerate Ukraine joining NATO. Ukraine isn’t like the tiny Baltic states.

Is gender truly a relevant and necessary factor in making your selections (or whatever you’re doing with your applications?). In a lot of cases it’s irrelevant. If it’s irrelevant, don’t ask. Problem solved!If you’re asking because you want to know what gender pronouns to use to describe a person, simply ask that (“What are you preferred gender pronouns?” providing options and a fill-in-the-blank).But let’s assume you have thought through that first question and want to proceed with a gender question on your application. Below are are a few sample options/food-for-thoughts.1. I identify my gender as…__________ (fill in the blank)[] Man[] Woman[] Trans*[] __________ (fill in the blank)[] Prefer not to discloseIf you absolutely need to know gender, my next easy suggestion would be to simply remove the “not disclose” option:3. I identify my sex as…[] Female[] Male[] Intersex[] MtF Female[] FtM MaleA few additional thoughtsOne of the things you’ll notice as a common thread throughout all of the questions is the prompt, “I identify my…” I recommend this because it begins the action as a form of empowerment, instead of other options I’ve seen that often take the power to decide away from the individual answering the question.Also, consider how you are going to be using the data you’re collecting before you decide how to collect it. If you’re planning on matching people up based on gender (e.g., partners for activities, team relationships), you might ask for the applicants’ to report their gender but also ask them which gender they would feel most comfortable working with. Then you can use their responses to place them in self-described comfortable partnerships, or choose to challenge them if you would rather see them working outside of their comfort zone.I’m not a big fan of exhaustive lists when trying to describe identities (see #4), because they are rarely exhaustive. And if you miss one or two, but include 15 others, those one or two get the sense of super-marginalization. People who push boundaries are quite frustrating. I am a shaman and spiritual teacher. I have done work on myself for 20+ years and recently I had a woman who pushed and pushed and pushed. This woman was part of an organization I had tried to join over a year before and my membership application had gotten dropped. She was trying to push it over the finish line. I told her that I didn't have time in this moment to deal with it, so she should go on to someone else. She ignored my comment. She asked me for a few things which were easy for me to give, so I gave them. But then she started asking for more and I told her once again that I didn't have time. She said, oh it won't take long, just get me this. I said no. She said “well I only work on one file at a time , so I can't go on to another person's until I've completed yours.” I said, that it wasnt my problem, that I had told her I was too busy to deal with it. She refused to hear it and gave me a directive to do my homework. I said that it wouldn't be necessary because I was revoking my application to the organization and I hung up.When someone crosses your boundaries despite statement and reinforcement of them, they are doing emotional violence to you. You have every right to be unhappy/disturbed/hurt/angry about it. And absolutely you have every right to remove them or the situation from your life.
