As a medical professional I am baffled that people can view an order designed to save millions of lives and the economy as oppression, and as the granddaughter of Holocaust survivors I am fucking furious.Yes, this stay-at-home order absolutely sucks dicks, a whole bag of them, but please believe me when I tell you that COVID-19 sucks dicks by the metric ton. So, so, so many dicks, dicks that won’t even fit in your mouth when you’re on a ventilator, which is why these unprecedented measures are necessary. You can yap all you want about your individual freedoms, but the government has always had the right to restrict those when it was deemed warranted for the sake of public safety. You don’t have the individual freedom to shoot your gun into the air and disclaim responsibility for where the bullet ends up, and you don’t have the right to recklessly risk someone else’s health. Besides, this is a very mild form of a mandatory public health measure, because you’re not getting locked up behind chainlink fences, and you’re not getting arrested if you’re a dumbass who wants to throw a small party in your own home. Really the only part that’s being strictly enforced is the closure of non-essential businesses, and while that is financially devastating to many, you have not been handcuffed or locked in your own home.When my mom’s parents were very young children, their parents were forced out of work because of their ethnicity and religion. Their assets were confiscated and their home repeatedly robbed by a semi-official gang. They were physically barred from moving about, had to wear visible identifiers, and eventually had to flee to the countryside using false papers. That was enough to buy them three months of the relative freedom of living 15 people above a barn, until some terrified and hungry soul sold them out for some butter. Then they were put in truck, tossed on a freight train, and as toddlers they were then yanked from their parents. When the war finally ended, two young kids were left with absolutely no traceable relatives and placed in an orphanage where they met and decided to stick together for life. They never ever recovered, physically or mentally, and they were in their fifties before they dared to have children, because they still feared that someone else would come along and rip families like theirs apart.I’d love a mani/pedi, I fantasize about sitting down in a restaurant with my friends, and I’m fairly gutted that I have lost at least one business permanently. Unlike several of the patients I’ve treated in the last five weeks, I’m still alive, I’m still allowed to go for a jog, and my family and I are living together in our own home. So no, Governor Edwards isn’t Hitler. None of the governors are, and we can debate the merits of the shelter-in-place orders without deliberately risking public safety by squeezing together at the capitol.
