What are the cheapest places to get married?

The absolutely cheapest place to get married is the Courthouse ran by your county. When my husband and I got married in 2005, we couldn't afford much of anything. So we got our marriage license (cost like $60), waited at least 3 days (mandatory waiting time), and went to Jackson County Courthouse in Kansas City, MO where every Saturday they had someone performing marriages. We paid the guy $20 and was married. Now if you are asking for cheap locations, then you might try a church your a member of (they sometimes will let you use the church for free or reduced cost), sometimes parks have places you can rent for a day, or maybe a friend or family member that has a large house may let you hold it there.

What happened that made you walk out of the courtroom and think, "That did not just happen."?

I myself have not had a crazy experience in a court room, but Sean Kernan has passed this question on to me, and there is a crazy story about a courthouse in my neighborhood….I live in San Rafael, north of San Francisco, next to the Marin County Civic Center. The neighborhood here is so quiet many of my neighbors leave the doors unlocked. So it’s hard to imagine, but in 1970 we had two related domestic terrorist attacks take place at the courthouse. The trouble started over racial violence at Soledad prison. There had been a shooting at Soledad prison where white guards shot three black inmates dead during a fight between white and black inmates. In 1970, a man named George Jackson was accused of killing a white guard in retaliation. His 17 year old brother James Jackson then led a kidnapping attempt as a political statement, in an effort to force the state of California to free his brother. He and some others broke into the courthouse and took a judge, prosecutor and some jurors hostage with the help of shotguns supposedly purchased for them by an ex UCLA professor named Angela Davis. (Oh, these lefty liberal California professors…)Jackson held the judge at gunpoint and even duct taped a sawed off shotgun to his throat. They escaped to a van that was waiting outside. Some local reporters heard this was happening and came to take pictures. The kidnappers shouted “you take all the pictures you want! we are the revolutionaries.”The van didn’t get very far as, while leaving the parking lot, they ran into a police roadblock, and a fire fight ensued. The poor judge was killed when the shotgun attached to his head went off. A shooting melee ensued in which three black panthers were killedA warrant was issued for the arrest of Angela Davis and she became a fugitive until the FBI caught up with her. Richard Nixon gave the FBI public words of thanks for her arrest. She was later cleared of all charges.Just when the good people of Marin County thought this episode was finally over, on October 8, 1970, the Marin County Courthouse was bombed by a group known as the weatherman who claimed they had carried out to the bombing in retaliation for the killing of the 3 abductors. In 1971 three days before he was to go on trial, George Jackson was fatally shot in the prison yard of San Quentin during an escape attempt. The parents of the inmates who had been killed at Soledad, in the event that set off this whole cycle of violence, later sued the state of California for their deaths. An all white journey jury awarded them $270,000It’s hard to imagine such events happening in my quiet little neighborhood today.
