PDF Editor FAQ

What are the school supplies I should get?

Colorful Butcher-block Paper:Nothing says “I’m a teacher and it’s the start of a new school year” like wheeling the ‘ole butcher-block paper dispenser into your classroom and putting up new backgrounds on your bulletin boards. That’s the only time I change the bulletin boards. I’m really, really lazy when it comes to those things. The displays I put up in August stay there until June. They’d stay there over the summer, too, if it were allowed. I have to take them down because the summer cleaning and floor waxing makes a mess and they’d be ruined anyway.

How do you feel about buying school supplies off a list from your child's teacher, knowing that what you buy will be shared with the whole class?

I don't mind buying school supplies that will be shared. What I have a problem with is buying school supplies and then finding out on the first day of school that they all got dumped into a bucket together. While shopping for 4th grade school supplies, my artistically talented daughter spent several minutes agonizing over which set of colored pencils to buy. She wanted a large color selection instead of limiting herself to the standard 8 to 10 colors. Of course the larger sets are more expensive but I was willing to pay a bit more if it helped her be more excited about going to school. She also took her time to decide on the perfect color/ design for her scissors that year. She took ownership of her choices and was excited to be able to use them. The “meet the teacher” day came and we trekked to her classroom. Teacher pointed to a series of labeled bins and told us to “put her school supplies away.” I explained to the teacher that daughter specifically chose her colored pencils for their variety and would be disappointed and frustrated if other kids took them. She assured me that if I write daughter's name on the box all would be well. She could grab her own colors when it was time for a project. The communal box was simply for convenience. The same thing was told to me about the scissors. As the school year progresses, I find out that daughter's box of colored pencils have been dumped in with everyone else's and of course the other kids are grabbing her special colors before she is able to get them. Her scissors have been ruined by other students doing stupid with them. Daughter has become increasingly despondent due to teacher not keeping her word or being consistent with rules. As I knew daughter would have the same teacher in 5th grade (teacher moved up a grade and the 2 teachers did team teaching, so there was no point in asking for a change), that year's school shopping went differently. They wanted me to buy a box of colored pencils. I buy the set of 8 for the school and buy a nice set of 50 for daughter to use at home. The artwork she produces at home has not disappointed me.

Why do middles schools and high schools stop giving out school supplies lists?

Middle and high schools typically don’t give out supply lists because that it when kids start making their own schedules and taking electives, not to mention having different teachers for advanced and regular classes. This results in kids with wildly different schedules and teachers. Therefore, a single school supply list could not possibly be accurate considering the amount of variability.
