Question: What are the worst geographical factual errors in movies?Hmm…Let’s see:Vancouver only looks like the Pacific Northwest - Many series (Supernatural, Stargate, The X-Files,Millennium, etc.) attempted to make Vancouver look like other areas of North America and it nearly always fails.They get the location of the Sun and the ocean mixed up - If you are on the West Coast of the United States, the Sun will will never rise over the ocean. In Hawaii it will; however that’s an island.Misplaced mountains - Essentially pan flat cities like Houston, Chicago and Detroit have all been shown with mountains and hills in the near distance.Palm and eucalyptus trees - Since a lot of films and television productions are shot in Southern California but are supposed to be “set” elsewhere, the production team uses long angle and tight shots to prevent things that should be elsewhere from appearing the shots. However, this doesn’t always works as the first three Halloween films all have all palm tress in them which is impossible as they are supposed to be set in Northern Illinois. Additionally eucalyptus trees grow poorly in wet climates and so wouldn’t be present in the subtropical areas of SE Texas or Florida.Europe doesn’t have Douglas firs - The Douglas fir is a tree common in Western United States. However when forests are shown in lower budget films and television series “set” in Europe, the rather odd number of Douglas firs (which has never grown there in significant quantities) is noticeable.

Seems safe to me, but I would still have disquieting thoughts if I were within 50 or 100 miles.Windmills are no friend to birds either. I would say no, but then I don’t live in Del Norte County in 2020, and maybe ideas about where the PNW ends and starts have shifted recently.The Pacific Northwest is generally thought to consist of the states or Oregon and Washington. Maybe Idaho. Definitely British Columbia if you’re looking at the region from a US-centric standpoint. (Do Canadians call BC the “northwest”? I would highly doubt it.)Clearly Del Norte County has far more in common culturally, climatically, and so on with southern Oregon than it does with, say, San Diego or Palm Springs. Yet, at least in my day, growing up much farther south in northern California, the term PNW did not apply to California. Perhaps that’s changed, and I’ll edit or delete my answer if so.You might be interested to read about Jefferson (proposed Pacific state) - Wikipedia. This concept shows you that some people in far northern California counties like Del Norte County have at least a hypothetical wish to align with southern Oregon, with whom they have a lot in common. But that’s different from saying those California counties are in the PNW (unless that’s the consensus now; terms like these do shift over time).
