What did students have to do in high school to get into the Ivy League or other prestigious universities?

A very good friend of mine will be heading off to Stanford in a couple weeks, and because she doesn't have a Quora I decided to write a bit about her. She got into every school she applied to besides UChicago (including Harvard), and all without any national awards or science competitions. Her stats are fairly good. 35 on the ACT, 4.0 unweighted GPA, 5s on almost all of her AP exams (I remember the day we opened AP scores after her junior year and she started laughing at the 3 on AP Lit. “Well I’m not sending that one to colleges.”) 780 on math 2 and, not very shockingly, a 670 for literature. She was very friendly and involved in high school. Cross country and track all four years, as well as a state-placing dance team. She did ASB a couple years, and lots of volunteer work. No research or any big internships. Linear algebra at the local community college. After the acceptance from Harvard I could tell she was really trying to pick her application apart, searching for what everyone on this site calls a “spike.” A couple weeks later she finally decided it was her essays. She had written a combination of two stories. On one side describing her job at this cute little donut shop, and the other a scene with one of the patients living in her home (her house had been turned into a sort of home for the elderly, specifically Koreans with Alzheimer's.) She said she wanted to approach her own unique problem solving style through two different anecdotes. It’s hard to explain lol. But in the end there were no fancy competitions, no big internships, no perfect SATs. It was just constant hardwork throughout high school. Choosing the most challenging classes, having an actual social life, and really just enjoying the time while it lasted. She really knew it was the essays when she got a personal letter from the dean of admissions at Stanford saying they loved her “why Stanford” essay. (It was something about the lawyers in China fighting against an oppressive justice system. She wants to fight for people in a nutshell.)But yeah! Normal people get into these schools too guys. Don’t lose hope.Edit: it’s been a while and it seems people still read this! my own college decisions have come and gone and I still can’t answer this question (#ivyreject) but I did get into Swarthmore + NYU so I guess it’s all good haha!! I hope you all will be attending the college of your dreams :)))

What type of things should you be doing in high school to get into MIT or Stanford?

My daughter goes to Stanford and I have gotten to know many of her classmates. They all had top grades and high test scores, many were valedictorians, but on top of that, they typically had one particular passion in which they excelled, and received recognition at the state, national, or international level. Or some of them had passions that were rare, such as one kid raised falcons from an early age, and another one had a popular fashion blog plus her own fashion line. The kids who win the Intel and Google Science fairs are usually there too. Many of them had projects in which they addressed problems in their communities and spread kindness. My daughter created an app that went viral and has become popular (currently used in 8 countries). She was covered all over tv and print media, and won all kinds of local, national, and international awards. She spoke from the podium at the Great Assembly Hall at the United Nations, and she was flown to London to give a TEDx talk. One of the best things about Stanford is the incredible community. Each student has excelled in his or her own way, so there is no jealousy or competitiveness, and class discussions are amazing because each person has so much to contribute. We feel lucky to be Stanford parents because it is such a wonderful school.
