The life of Swiggy delivery boys!!!I was working for Cognizant Technology Solutions for 3.5 years. Then i attended few interviews and was selected in Amazon. I Quit CTS and was home for almost 3 months since the date of joining in Amazon was on a later date. I spent a month at home idle and it struck me to take up a part time job. Since i was not sure when i would get a call from Amazon, I took the job of Swiggy delivery part time. I was not able to sit at home all day doing nothing. I worked for around a month and then quit due to various reasons. I am telling a few points which the delivery boys go through. I hope this will help in understanding what all they go through. Its going to be a lengthy answer. So, kindly bear with me. There can be mistakes from the delivery guys too, but i am writing only the other factors here which we face everyday and not all the other problems.Customer sideHotel sideCustomer side:Incorrect address: Often, customers order food from a hotel, but the delivery location is wrong. We reach the delivery location given to us and call them. They say an address which is not even close to the given location. We have to go and deliver the food to whichever location the customer asks us. So, before you confirm the order, check twice for the location. Sometimes the difference in both the locations may go up to 10 kms. It is a waste of time for us as we would have picked up and delivered one more order by the time we deliver the wrong location food.Fake Customer/Address: Few Cash on delivery orders are fake. We get the order, go to the hotel, pick it up and drive to the customer location which is around 5–6 kms away, and upon reaching the location, there are two things that happen. There will be no building by the name given in the address(Fake Address) or when we call and ask the customer for details, they say that they are not in a mood to eat and will cancel the order or prank us. (Fake customer). Even though Swiggy pay us for that, it is a double work for us since we have to submit the order delivered in Swiggy office which is generally away from the zone assigned to a Delivery guy. We could have done another delivery by the time we go to Swiggy office, Submit the food, fill up the details and get back to the designated area.Impatience: Few customers order north Indian food items or dry items/ more number of items during peak hours. The food prepared is already a delayed process and especially during peak hours, we have to wait in the hotel for 45 mins to an hour to get the food prepared. Meanwhile, we would get continuous calls from the customer asking why the food hasn't been delivered. Kindly understand that no delivery guy would want to wait in the hotel or not deliver the food. More the orders we deliver, the better pay we get.Taking delivery guys for granted: For few Cash on delivery orders, if the order value is around 420–440, we get calls from the customer when we are waiting in the hotel asking us to buy mixture/snacks for the balance amount to make it 500 rounded off. We have no other option than to oblige fearing the negative comments and ratings we might get.Hotel Side:Wrong items: Delivery guys are expected to check for items delivered before taking it out of the hotel. If there are 3–4 different items in an order, they are neatly packed. So, if there are the expected number of items, and if it matches with the order ID, we assume that the items are available. But little do we know that there are chances of one or two items being changed. For eg, if a customer has ordered 3 plain dosas and 2 masala dosas, and if we see that there are 5 dosas in the package, we assume its correct and take it for delivery. There are chances that there might be 2 masala dosa, 1 onion dosa and 2 rava dosa. We cannot open the package and confirm on this. So, customer gets pissed off here and give a bad rating and comment on us for the mistake done by the hotel. We are responsible only up to a limit. Such incidents do happen and we cannot do much for this.Disrespecting Delivery Guys: Few hotels have a place designated to various food delivery guys where they keep water on the table etc. We have to stay there, get the order and leave. That is totally understandable. But we are humans too! few hotels don’t treat delivery guys as humans. They ask us to wait outside the hotel. They don’t provide water for us even if asked, nor let us use the washroom. We are humans too and we need some basic things. How can we stay thirsty and not use the washroom. Once the food is delivered, even if there is any hotel or juice shop en-route for us to use both, we have the responsibility of delivering the order on time and hence, never get the opportunity to even drink water or use the washrooms.So next time you order food through any app, or if you see anyone on the road, kindly give a smile or offer them water. It means a lot. I was financially stable and was working for time pass. But not everyone are like me. They make their living out of this. Hope this message reach to more number of people and understand our plight.Thanks.Edit 1:I would like to add few more points.For few cash on delivery orders which amounts to ₹102, 201, etc, the customers give 100 or 200 and say they don't have change and close the door. The first time I had such order, I was literally shocked if there are people like this exist. But later, I got few more orders the same way! The balance ₹1 or 2 may not be a big deal for you, but it is for a delivery guy.Those of you asking the salary of delivery guys in comments and messages, I was working in Coimbatore. Swiggy pays the delivery guys weekly. We receive payment every Thursday. Since I was working part time(evening 7–11), I was getting around 2000. If you are working full time, weekly payment may go upto 7500–8000. It varies and is higher in metro cities. Not sure exactly how much. Plus incentives if we complete certain number of orders. It goes anywhere between 700–7000 weekly based on the orders delivered.I had few enquiries regarding the impact of customer rating. It does not affect the weekly pay in any way. Even if a customer gives one rating, we would get the payment. The place impacted would be on the incentive part. For a delivery guy who had to get around 5000 as incentive for example, may get only around 1000. This is just for an example and not the exact amount.Edit 2:This part of the answer is for some people who degrade such jobs, especially Arunav KhareWhy would I have to cook it up dude? I did what I wanted to! Shouldn't I work for such jobs if I get selected in Amazon or be it any other organisation? You want me to go around and boast to anyone that I got selected in so and so company with this much package.? And I don't feel ashamed because I was working for swiggy. Unless you are sitting at home all day and doing nothing, some work is better. There are so many youths sitting at home idle and eating their parents money! No job is downgraded, no job is superior. Just because one person is working in a centralised office atmosphere, it doesn't make him any more than a fellow human being. Infact all the points I said from the customer side, many of them are from people working in IT. And regarding the timing, they have set of shifts divided. They have shifts covering upto 2 early in the morning. I wanted part time and not full time. And only this slot was available in the area I wanted. This kind of mentality is what needs to be changed. You think just because someone is working in blue collar job are less than us? We, the educated people throw litter everywhere and it's the so called blue collar working people you mentioned who are cleaning it. Okay, fine. Let it keep this way. I am not as educated as you to teach others all computer language. I don't belong to that field first off. I guess you didn't see my education in my profile. I don't belong to computer languages. And moreover, even if I am good in something, I suck at teaching to others. And I know many people including my friends who work in so called IT, drive ola, uber part time. In fact, even I wanted to drive for ola/uber. Just that I needed a T-board vehicle which I didn't have, I did not opt for it. No job is less unless you are not cheating anyone and earning. Hard earned money is also good money! It takes around 15–20 mins for them to agree that it's a fake one.Also I would like to add few more:Batch order: Batch order is when a delivery guy gets two order at the same time if it's in the same location. If 2 customers living close by order from the same hotel, it will be assigned to one delivery guy! So, during peak hours, waiting for one delivery itself takes time, imagine the scenario for two orders. Even if one order is ready and we can leave, we have to wait for the other one.
