What was it like to live in India in the 1970s?

I am writing this answer on behalf of my Mother. I wish she was sitting right next to me while I am writing this. Alas! Though she is only a phone call away, but one Munni Didi from Sahebganj is visiting in the evening, so yeah, she is busy in her dinner preparations.Anyhow, write I shall (with the risk of running this into too many paragraphs as I have a few too many stories)! My mom’s Dad was an excise commissioner in the 70s and early-mid 80s and because of his transferable job they used to keep on moving and staying in different cities every 2–3 years. There are stories from Sahebganj, Begusarai, Tata Nagar (Jamshedpur), Munger, Gopalganj etc. Characters sometimes overlap in my head but I catch up often towards the end of every story.I have listened to her tales so many times (willingly) that almost all of it is etched in my memory quite vividly as if I have myself experienced all of that along with her. These stories have driven me to one conclusion - People of that time Cared!People had time, people had the heart to spend their time on others! Sometimes money too!Going to night movie shows (after dinner) wasn't that big a deal for even girls of the family; only condition was that their brother / uncle / father / Pappu / Guddu / any ‘He’ of the family had to accompany them.Everyone in the neighborhood was an extended family. At almost every city my mother stayed in, afternoons were spent in one of the friend’s house (even though the parents were stricter those days), but there was more Trust!Fashion- Bell Bottoms and floral prints with Big glares. College girls also used to wear Saris to college. Today, even married women fashionably crib (brag) about not knowing how to drape it. Take a look -Pay close attention to men's hairstyles. All puffed up!They didn't need a reason to plan a picnic or go to studios to get pictures clicked every now and then.My Nana Ammi (Mom’s Mom) was the local Tarla Dalal. Critically acclaimed best cook. So invariably she would have all the ladies during afternoon till evening flocked in at her residence to learn different recipes. Oh did I mention she would Crochet and knit like all around the year? Now that I remember it, I think I never saw her without her knitting needles when she was alive. Funny! So, yeah, she used to teach that as well. With zero tuition fee of course!People knew their postman, milkman and paper wala by their first names and they were lovingly called with titles like bhaiya / mama / kaka (Bro / Uncle). Everyone was a relative!Raj Hans Novels! Pakeeza Aanchal! Mahekta Aanchal! Phantom! Mandrek! These are all the Comics and Desi novels they read. My mom still has one of her closets filled with 100s of their copies.People used to exchange comics / story books in college and sometimes boys would slip in a chit while lending- I like you, do you? And they used to get reply chits in return - Yes I do. I too like myself ! (Real life experience)When I ask her how she spent her time during vacations and weekends, I am told - you don’t need Facebook, Netflix, Whatsapp or even mobile phones to enjoy your free time. They are just a replacement of caring people around you and we had those in plenty at our times. I envy her!I feel life was easier in the 70s. Without mobile phones people were connected, without internet people were informed, without Kindle people were reading more, without Netflix and 500 TV channels people watched almost every movie released, in theaters. Simple and Easy!My mother finally called back to give her inputs and asked me to add the below lines. My mother was able to get in touch with a dozen of her old friends after the advent of mobile phones and Facebook in our country. She is Thankful to Mark Zuckerberg for helping her in building her network again. She is also thankful for Youtube for she can watch all the old TV serials - Humlog, Buniyaad, Dekh Bhai Dekh etc again from the start in repeat mode without having to get them downloaded (she doesn’t know how to download stuff and doesn’t even intend to learn). And she is most thankful for the online shopping web-sites. Who cares if my Dad doesn’t agree to drive her to the mall, the shops can come to her and the shopping must go on!P.S. I have many of my dad’s 70s stories too, but that’s for another day may be! Already a too LoOong Answer! :-)

How can you get a job before getting PR status in Canada?

Getting a job in Canada before getting a PR status is very difficult, but not impossible.Below, I will explain a few ways people I currently work with and know have done this.Take note that in some cases, if you are on a work permit in Canada, employers may not give you a full time job. Because a work permit is not considered “permanent” they will be hesitant to invest in a full time position for someone who does not have a guaranteed residency in Canada. But contract work is still possible. Here we go:OPTION 1: The luckiest and riskiest way - Your company in India transfers you on a special projectAt the company I currently work at, our IT division is outsourced to HCL. Project Managers and IT engineers from Bangalore and Noida are currently based out of our Brampton office. They were hired as “temporary foreign workers” from Canada’s International Mobility Program for a couple of years. After 1-2 years of experience, they may be eligible for permanent residency from one of the following programs:Canadian Experience Class (CEC) program – “I have 1 year of full time work experience in Canada, in a job that is classified in the Canadian National Occupation Classification (NOC).”Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) – “I have 2 years of full time work experience in Canada, in a job that is NOC classified, and the company loves me so much that they are willing to nominate me to apply for permanent residency.”The reason this is a risky choice is because you are not in control. Ultimately, you’re relying on the good will of your company and its success to dictate if you stay in Canada or pack up back to India. One of my colleagues in my team, Balaji, has been working with us for 2 years now. He is on a contracted project from HCL Bangalore. He has even brought his wife here on a sponsored work permit. Very soon, he will apply for permanent residency with CEC and I’m sure he will get it.OPTION 2: The expensive way - Apply for educationA friend of mine, Manjeet, moved from Pune to Canada and applied for a public relation course in Seneca College for $7,000.Once he completed the course he was given an open work permit for a year, and was given an opportunity to do internships with PR companies. This is standard for most educational institutes in Canada. He still had to formally apply for the job - internships are also like applying for normal jobs.During that one year, he networked like crazy. Called people, knocked on doors, attended events, seminars. He really took the time and effort to understood the PR market in Canada even though he had 7 years of experience doing it back home. I really admire his courage and drive. The company he applied for the internship for gave him the job. They loved his work and his personality. They will apply for PNP for him and he will get his permanent residency through them. (At his expense)Networking is one of the most effective ways of finding jobs, especially in the hidden job market.OPTION 3: The useless, time wasting way - Apply for jobs online at Monster, Workopolis, Indeed, LinkedIn etc.Imagine you are a HR hiring manager working for Tata Consultancy Services in Delhi. You have a job available and you receive 20 resumes. 19 are from HR professionals with great experience and fit the requirements, and they all live in Delhi. One is from a HR professional with great experience and fits the requirements, and she lives in Canada. Would you hire the Canadian? Please don’t waste your time applying for jobs on the online boards. Your resume is either not being looked at all, or is being tossed aside. Unless your skills on paper are so rare and exceptional and no one else living in Canada applying for the same job has it, you have no chance of securing a job in Canada this way. There is only one use for the job boards online. You can review the job descriptions of what is being asked in your line of work, and notice if there are any gaps that you can fill from now till you land. If you’re planning to get into project management for example, and you’re seeing “PMP is an asset”, get it done now while you have the comfort and support of your home base.Another use for the online job descriptions is if you’re in a regulated field. If you’re in the engineering, medical, teaching, accounting, HR field and some others, prepare to go back to school. Colleges and universities generally host these programs. Whether you can do them online while you are in India, I do not know. You will have to contact the respective training institute to find out.So what’s the best choice? Most people should fall in the Option 2 category but they make the mistake of relying on option 3. The reason I stress on networking is because in Canada, it’s not about what you know, it’s about who you know. There are 300K immigrants per year + 1 million college students + 6.5% unemployment rate in Canada – lots of competition! The job is awarded to the person the hiring manager trusts, and trust is most likely given to the person they know first hand.Networking is not just a one time activity, it’s a way of life. Regardless of which choice you pick, get into this habit while in India, while you still have time before the big move, so you can leverage this network after you land.Indians will have many challenges to face when looking for jobs, specifically because there are cultural difference between India and Canada. It doesn’t matter how many years of experience you have in India. As a human being, you have been raised with a specific culture. How you act, think and interact with others in the work place forms part of that culture.Cultural differences in Canada you need to knowIn Canada, more importance is placed on experience and accomplishments. Not on education. It doesn’t matter if you have a bachelors or masters or PHD. Recruiters firstly have no idea about the education system in India. Even if you state your WES equivalency, it’s not about your education, it’s about whether you have done the same job before. In your resume, it is very important to highlight your accomplishments and support it with numbers. For example, if you are an IT engineer, just listing “I resolved general IT problems for the staff” is not enough. State an accomplishment - “I resolved IT problems for the staff and reduced the incident count by 15% per year.”Also in Canada, people are specialized. If your resume promotes you as a jack of all trades and a master of none, it will not win any hearts of the Canadian recruiters. For example, if you are a civil engineer and your resume states you can build and fix anything, it’s not specific enough. You can Google “Job Titles for xxxx job in Canada”There are also differences in the way a Canadian resumé is written. If you want a quick way to write a good, high-converting resumé, I’ve made mine available for download, so you can copy the formatting and style the content in the similar way.Click here to download the Canadian resumé template. To your success in Canada!

What was your GATE preparation story?

The story is going to be a bit long. Do start reading only if you have enough patience to completely read it.The BeginningEvery kid who wants to pursue engineering has a dream of getting into IITs. Even I also had that dream. I only enjoyed dreaming and never planned about how to get into an IIT, and as a result I gave my JEE (Mains) without any preparation and obviously I didn’t qualify. I also gave WBJEE which is the Engineering entrance examination for state colleges in West Bengal. In this examination I performed better and secured a decent rank, with which I got admission in Government College of Engineering and Ceramic Technology in Information Technology department. I was satisfied with it and a new chapter of my life began. Now, one fine afternoon during my second semester I was going through the feed of my YouTube and a video caught my eye. The name of the video was: - “After BTech, MS or MTech or MBA or a job??” by Ravindra Babu Ravula. I watched the video completely and now I got a new perspective about certain things, I got to know about the difference between Product-Based and Service-Based companies. And most importantly I got to know that we get a second chance to get into an IIT by giving GATE. Prior to that I had no knowledge about GATE and its opportunities. I am grateful to Ravindra Babu Ravula for making such an informative video which made me realize that engineering is a lot more than just mugging up the night before your semesters and getting marks, and forgetting all that you have studied the next day, because you have another paper to mug up. He gave me a direction in my life. From that moment I decided that I have to learn all my core subjects properly and give GATE and get into an IIT to expand my knowledge on Computer Science. The PreparationThis time I thought to have a plan, which I lacked for JEE(Mains). At first, I downloaded the syllabus and gathered resources from where I could start my preparation. It’s the era of internet, and information about anything is just one-click away. So, I made use of this facility and got to know about NPTEL lectures. These are the finest lectures by the professors of IITs. Apart from that there are various YouTube channels that provides GATE preparation lectures such as Ravindra Babu Ravula. And some websites provide notes such as GeeksforGeeks, Tutorials point, GradeUp etc. And also bought a book containing the previous years papers with solution for practicing questions. Thus, I started my GATE preparation along with my semesters and I used to give more time for the subjects that were common between GATE and semester. By doing this I used to get a good knowledge about the subjects instead of mugging it and forgetting it later on.At the beginning of the 3rd year I bought test series, cause giving tests are very crucial for judging your preparation level. I never got good marks in the test series, I used to get very disappointed with myself but then after sometime I used to think that I need to improve so that I don’t get disappointed the next time. And this went on and I continued with my preparation without much focusing upon the result. The next para might seem off topic but it’s a part of the story.Since, I was not inclined towards joining any company at that time so I decided not to sit for the placements, but our college conducted a program along with TCS called Tata Affirmative Action Programme (TAAP) and my name was included in that by the college. Then I thought of doing it because I saw an opportunity to learn new things from that programme. I did this along with my preparation and ended up filling the TCS NQT as everybody attending TAAP filled and gave the exam, and to my surprise I qualified the written, as during the TAAP they prepared us for the basic aptitude, but I was not interested in attending the interview as I need to focus on my GATE preparation. Then a friend of mine forced me to attend the interview and boom I cleared the interview. I am grateful to that friend of mine who nagged me for giving the interview, because I had a boost in my confidence which could be used for GATE.Now, back to the preparation I practiced previous years questions and revised the subjects and gave tests for checking the level of preparation and again marks were not quite good. But I tried not to focus upon that part because it will only lead to depression. My preparation was going well but in the month of January, I became addicted to PUBG mobile and the study hours decreased. I gave a CBT conducted my Made Easy and in that I got something around 50 marks. Now only one week was left for the actual GATE 2019(CS) examination. In the last week I just brushed my concepts and checked the mistakes I that I made while solving the test series. My first attempt (GATE 2019)The exam stared and some of questions in the beginning were quite solvable which boosted my confidence and I went on with it. But I lacked time management. Anyways the exam ended and I decided not to think about it, cause it’s over, there’s nothing I could have done. Results came and I got 59 marks and an All India Rank of 1046 in GATE-19(CS).See, everybody preparing for GATE(CS) wants to secure an AIR of below 100, even I wanted that. And I was disappointed with my result. Anything can happen in those 3 hours, and what happened with me is that I made a bag full of silly mistakes. At that very moment I decided that I am going to give GATE again the next year and will not join TCS.My second attempt(GATE 2020)Then I took a break for sometime and then started to analyse the mistakes in my strategy that I had during my GATE-19 preparation and how I could improve upon that. The very first thing I did was uninstall the PUBG Mobile, because I wasted a lot of crucial time before GATE 19 which I could have used in a better way. I got an idea that I was not following a proper routine of giving tests and question practice. So, tried to form a strategy which is- theory of a subject -> previous years questions practice -> topic test -> analysis of the weak areas and revision. This one helped me; you can form yours cause having your own strategy provides flexibility. This resulted in improvement of the marks of the tests I gave and boosted my confidence eventually. Finally, my wait was over and the day of examination arrived. I took my mother’s blessings, would have taken father’s blessing too but he was off to his work, and stepped out with confidence. I entered the hall, gave the exam sincerely. I knew silly mistakes cannot be eliminated completely but could be made less, and I made sure of that. The result came out on 13th March 2020. I was not in top 100, but much better than last year and I am quite satisfied with it, because I took a risk of not joining a job and giving full time devotion towards GATE and my result gave me a sense that it was worth a risk. I got 64.67 marks and secured an AIR of 349 in GATE-2020(CS).I am just sharing my story; I am not suggesting anybody to take a risk of not joining a job at a multinational company and take a leap for GATE. But I can assure you of one thing that if you take that risk and secure a decent rank to get into an IIT, then it will build a trust upon yourself for the rest of your life.Lessons learnt :-Risks are required to be taken in life, you may be successful or may be not. But the knowledge about oneself gained and the experience is worth it.Organised planning is required to complete a task efficiently.
