That is one of the hardest jobs. Take an adorable 5-year-old. On the stage during a rehearsal with 100 other kindergarteners, he distractedly lifted up his shirt, revealing a piece of yellow electrical tape that had been on the floor to mark the spot he had to go stand on after leaving the risers. Not a stutter, not a hesitation, not a change in glance or voice as he calmly asserted that his mommy had put the yellow tape on his tummy that morning. His teacher and I were dying to laugh and curious to see how far he would take the lie. He stuck to his story even when his teacher pretended to use her cellphone to call his mother, and he stuck to his story even when the teacher said his mother said she sure didn’t send him to school taped up. Had it not been something ridiculously obvious, we would have totally believed him. Teachers develop a sixth sense about truthfulness and lack thereof among the younger general population (as well as their parents, lol), but once in awhile you get one of these. I imagine cops have situations like these all the time, as well. In short, it takes hundreds of interactions with many different people to start to develop strategies to get to the truth. Even then, an adorable little 5-year-olds can evade all your strategies and stick to a lie like it’s nothing.
