What is your life story?

What Is Your Life Story?I was raised by a middle class family in suburbia.Growing up, I was raised by my grandparents. My grandfather was a veteran who had earned a retirement from the US Air Force and had a pension from Armco, the biggest steel manufacturer at the time. My mother was also earning a six figure income, as she had progressed from bartending and modeling to owning her own business. So we were living a pretty stable lifestyle. As a child, I basically was able to have anything and everything I could ever want, from the newest PlayStation, X-Box, toys, food, and everything a kid could imagine. I suppose you can say that I was one of those spoiled kids who were showered with love and gifts. While growing up, my grandfather used to volunteer at my school's cafeteria in elementary school and would often bring me McDonald's for lunch. Whenever I wanted to go somewhere, my grandfather would take me. ‎I was showered with his unconditional love. However, in between eighth and ninth grade, he eventually was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.It was something that I couldn't understand: the person who had loved me with all his heart started to forget who I was. He could no longer remember who he was, let alone me, and it cut straight through my heart.‎My grandmother wanted to take care of him on her own, so she had moved us from our home in Buena Park to Fountain Valley. Because of the move, as I attended my first high school, it was difficult as I had to make new friends.‎Later that year, we ended up moving back to our original home in Buena Park, and I was able to attend the school that my Jr. High friends attended. ‎Being lost and confused, not able to understand the emotions I was going through, I decided that I needed something to escape from the detrimental nature of the thoughts that were going through my head. Having a hero whom I loved with all my heart losing his memory and forgetting who I was... I couldn't imagine something more painful.I made a decision. I wanted to sell burnt CDs. So I went to Frys one day, and I bought an external burner for my computer. It was interesting, because at the age of fourteen, I was earning about $250 a week. For a kid, that is like earning a million dollars. Eventually, when I was fifteen, while CD sales were declining, I got caught up with the wrong crowd. I started selling CD players I had stolen from local retailers. That wasn't too great of an idea, as it caused me a lot of trouble. Being locked away in a holding cell waiting for a grandmother to come pick you up, with a million and one things to yell about was definitely not the best experience of my life.Well, on one bright and sunny day when I was sixteen, on the world of the internet, I had met my first girlfriend, thanks to an AOL chat room.It wasn't a relationship that led to a happy ending like Jane Chin's marriage with her husband, whom she also met on AOL. But it was fun.Dialing up to get online with the 56.6k modems, listening to the buzzing and beeping for two to three minutes, trying to grasp the ability to get online, getting disconnected over and over again, and finally being able to successfully connect. Those were the days.Well, I met this girl, who lived in La Mirada and we decided to go out. We did a lot of interesting and fun things, like smoke behind the Toys 'R' Us while blowing our smoke from our cigarettes into hearts, smoking weed, and just talking about life. We were two damaged kids, lost, trying to escape from the world we were placed into. Trying to escape from the travesties of life. Her father had just remarried another woman, she was disowned and sent to live with her grandmother. My grandfather had recently died, and I was left all alone in the world, clueless of what I was to do. Two tragic messes, trying to make it in the world, without a clue what we wanted except for each other.I was working at Knott's Berry Farm at the time, my first real job, earning a measly $5.75 an hour, or $87 a week, while the minimum wage was set at $6.50. Since my job required me to do park services, which meant that I had to pick up trash, clean bathrooms, and bus tables, it meant that I knew all the secret entrances into the theme park. On one occasion, we had snuck into the theme park and had a grand old time, doing what kids do. Public displays of affection. We rode the rides and had the time of our lives, then departed.Another time, we had set off to go to the movies. I invited one of my friends. She invited one of hers. As we attempted to set them up on a date, my friend had walked into the wrong movie and watched it all alone. For some reason, our efforts in connecting these two people had failed miserably.Hmm, that's interesting. That triggers back a memory to the first time I had tried ecstasy. I was at this friend's house, the one I had to try to hook up with this girl's friend, and she had brought over some pills for us to try. I took the pill, then after about an hour, I had blacked out completely, then everyone thought I was dead. Eventually, I woke up, puking all over myself. Maybe that's why I don't do ecstasy and could never get into the rave scene... I think this would mark the first time I almost died in my life.Well, one time, my girlfriend had told me that she wanted to see me. I decided that I wanted to see her as well. I asked my grandmother if she would be so kind as to let me borrow her car. She declined my request, so I did what any teenager who had all these repressed feelings would do. I decided that I would steal her car and went off. I decided to leave her home for three days. On the third day, I ended up crashing her 2000 Corolla straight into a tree.It was quite a fortunate event, hitting that tree. If I were to have missed it, I would have taken myself, along with the three passengers in the vehicle, to their ultimate demise, as we would have fallen into a ditch and have died.Outraged by the incident, my grandmother had decided that she was done with me. She had disowned me and sent me off to live with my mother in a dirty city called Los Angeles. On the drive over to my new home, I looked out the window of her Jeep Grand Cherokee and was unable to see an ounce of green grass. Instead, I saw a dirt ridden city of abuse and abandonment. I was scared.Living with my mother was an interesting new experience, as I never had really considered her family growing up.She was just the woman who had randomly arrived at my home, during the holidays, to drop off presents or money from her sexy little black Camaro. So, having to live with someone I hardly knew was an interesting predicament I never thought I would encounter. My mother was a very interesting parental figure. She had a unique theory on how to raise a child. Basically, she let me do whatever I wanted. It was as laissez-faire as it gets. I was expected to figure out the world on my own, through my personal experiences. She wasn't there to tell me what to do or what not to do.When we had gone out to places to eat, she would buy me alcohol. When I wanted cigarettes, she would get them for me. Being raised by a strict grandmother, this was refreshing. At times, I even took advantage of the situation and bit off more than I could chew. Eventually, I came to find that was a bad thing to do.Well, she had bought me my first car that summer, a brand new 2001 Camry, as I had to still attend school in Orange County. It was quite a blessing, back in those days, to have gas be 99 cents a gallon. All the places I could go, all the places I could see, for just a dollar, as opposed to the $4 we have to spend now.Since I hadn't made friends in LA yet, I decided to hang out with my friends in Fullerton. We went to pools, stole alcohol from the grocery store, and just did stupid reckless things. It didn't really make sense why these rich privileged kids were doing these things, but I was doing it to escape from my reality. Then, one day, these kids who I had considered to be my friends, had teamed up against me and beat me to a pulp. I had a golf club and baseball bat swung at me so many times, my nose is still disfigured. Then school started. While I was attending school, something that changed the world had happened. I arrived one morning and my teacher had turned on the news. The Twin Towers had fallen. Little did I know what impact this event would have on my life, or the world. My little young naive mind wasn't able to process the event as it took place. It was just too surreal for me to understand.Regardless, I went back to living my life. It was tough to get to school on time, as I had to deal with traffic and the other influences of my life. I usually ended up arriving late, so I was always booked with detention and Saturday school. Since I never made it to Saturday school due to the extra gas, I was eventually kicked out. When I was kicked out, my mother had decided to enroll me into a school in the LAUSD system. We had picked LA High. Attending LA High was one of the weirdest experiences of my life. The school had a fence that was at least twenty feet tall, preventing students, or prisoners from ditching. The school curriculum was horrid, as I was learning what I had learned in eighth grade. Everything about the school made no sense.Still being traumatized by this event of my grandfather and being unable to understand how to cope with it, I ditched school on many occasions and just drank my life away. My friends and I went to PC rooms to play Counterstrike, we smoked weed, smoked cigarettes, met all the women we could, and just thought we were the cool kids.We just partied hard and then eventually, things just fell apart. There was a shift of economy due to the new state of war we were in. President Bush promoted a war on terrorism. Consumers were in fear. Consumers stopped spending. Eventually, my mother had lost her business. When my mother lost her business, it was probably the first time I had actually experienced poverty. She had to close her business, we had to sell off all our furniture, our cars were repossessed, and we were left with absolutely nothing. To get by each day, we had one meal of rice, egg, and soy sauce or butter, just to keep ourselves barely nourished. We just sat around at home, with absolutely nothing to do. This lasted for months on end, and each tomorrow just seemed hopeless.Eventually, my mother was able to slightly recover, yet we were right back where we started. My mother's boyfriend, who was 35 (Yes, my mom likes young men.) at the time, when she was 50, started to help out with the overhead at home. My mother forced me to buy a Buick Century 2003 in my name for her to use. Then, as time progressed, I got involved in the multi-level marketing industry, as I saw it as a way to prevent another tragic event like this from ever occurring again for us in the future. I was able to attend college for a year, but then I decided to drop out.I started working full time at Macy's in the Beverly Center for about the next year and a half, until one day, when my mother was just fed up with life. She decided that she wanted to run away from all the hell she was in. I mean, after losing a business, it can be quite a tragic event, so I can understand completely. So she looked at me and said, "You pay car, you pay apartment, I go Hawaii now, bye!"I didn't have the slightest clue what was going on. What did she mean she was going to Hawaii? What did she mean pay for the rent? The car? What? I have to pay for everything? So, I didn't have a clue what to do. I was earning maybe $1,600 a month. That surely wasn't enough to cover this new overhead I was given, so I figured it was time for me to make a career change. I sought out a friend of mine, who had told me he was earning $4,000 a month. He had helped me schedule an interview at his employer, Manhattan Beach Toyota.I had applied, and miraculously, I got the job. I had a brand new position at a brand new company, my mother was gone, and it was my duty to cover all the bills. It was May of 2005 and my new career had started.I was excited. I had gotten the opportunity to be a man. No longer did I have to have my mother drive me to the San Gabriel Valley so I could meet Chinese and Vietnamese women to date. I had a car, my own home, and my own income. I could just take people back to my new place, as a bachelor! That excitement soon faded away, as I came to realize how hard automobile sales really was. The first two months, I had not earned a single penny more than the state minimum wage, and was forced to eat free popcorn out of the popcorn maker for our customers, just to survive. Eventually, on my third month, things clicked for me. I understood what was going on and finally figured out how to properly sell a vehicle. My income had skyrocketed up to $50k a year, then $100k the following. In the interim, I ended up having a casual relationship with my best friend, then my ex came into my life. We got together.I felt like I was rich. I was in love. We discussed our thoughts about getting married and having children. We were going out and spending thousands a month on food.I had everything that I could have ever imagined in life. Then one day, I thought hard about life. I thought to myself, is this really all life has to offer? I achieved everything I set my heart out to achieve, yet at the end of the day... I feel completely unfulfilled. So I did what any other person in my situation would do. Just like the celebrities, instead of trying to find some magical meaning to life, I turned to drugs. My ex and I divulged ourselves into drugs, until we lost each other. I remember back in December of 2006, I was going through the ATM withdrawals I was pulling. I calculated it up... I had to be spending $1,800 a month, because what else is there to use cash for in a world filled with credit cards? After she was gone, that August of 2006, just a week or two before her birthday, I was lost. I realized, that I had lost everything I had wanted in my life. I had lost everything that had ever meant anything to me. I just broke down and cried. I begged for her to get back with me. I went to the mall and bought her birthday gifts, in the hope that she would accept me back. I went to her parent's home. They let me in. I woke up my ex and had told her I loved her. Then I gave her the gifts, a Dior necklace inclusive. She rejected the gifts, and rejected me as well. I told her, that since the gifts were nonrefundable, to just keep them. Then, I was off. Back onto the 110 freeway, heading northbound to my home. I was crying on the whole trip back, without a clue what was going on. On the drive home, I didn't care about a single thing. I was hopeless, so I cried with my eyes closed. I'm certain I had my eyes shut for at least ten minutes as the tears poured out. Something had overcome my body and moved my foot from the accelerator to the brake, and when I had opened my eyes, I saw that I was just a matter of inches away from slamming into the vehicle ahead of me. That was my fourth encounter with death, where I stared straight into it's eyes. (Yes, I skipped the third time.)I didn't have a clue how to deal with all the emotion I was feeling. I had everything I wanted, I took it for granted, and let it all slip out of my hands. Outraged, I went on a rampage. I had so much anger towards myself, I lashed out everywhere I could. I stuck every single customer I could into a loan they could barely afford. I went out and seduced all the women I could. I just was a complete mess, acting out because I lost everything that had any value to me.Eventually, one day, I had decided to meet my friend. He was working at a Cafe called Modena at the time, and I haven't seen him for years. I ordered shaved ice, which accounted for a bill of $12. I decided to leave a $100 tip. Shocked as my friend was, he implied that I could come by any time I wanted, and everything would be on the house. One day, when I had visited my friend at the cafe, he was sitting next to quite a peculiar fellow. This person had a tablet PC in 2006, when these things were unheard of. He was going over games and exercises, to increase the cognitive abilities of my friend.I walked up and interrupted them. I said, hey, what's up! This guy who I had never met before, put his hand up to his lips, and I shut up and waited. Eventually, I got to know him better, and he soon became my mentor. He helped me in my recovery process, by helping me get in tune with myself, understanding life from a different perspective, and worked on my charisma. One day I had so much charisma that I had exited the door to my building at work, turned left to go smoke a cigarette, and everyone in the service bay moved to allow me to walk by, simultaneously. It was unreal. He had decided that he wanted me to work with him. He told me that I would be earning an income that I couldn't even fathom, then told me I would be drug tested. I was high as a kite every single day of my life, so I started to distance myself. Eventually, I just disappeared out of his life and succumbed into a pit of depression. In December, during that pit of depression, I had looked over my bank statements, and saw how much money I was spending on these drugs, did the math, and realized that I could have been driving a S Class Benz.Immediately, I became drug free. I quit the next day. Math is a very huge motivator to quit any type of drug, especially when you can see what you could have been doing with your life.Well, I had become tired of my job and I wanted a change. If this mentor had believed in me, I thought I could believe in myself. So I started up a business of my own. This was the first business I had ever established. I had absolutely no clue what I was doing. I had no clue that places like Kinkos over charged. I just decided to go out there and try to build a business, with what I was given.Eventually, I ended up piling myself into debt, maxing out my credit cards, I lost my home, and I was left all alone, with absolutely nothing. It was like a blast to the past, when I had sat there with my mother in an empty home, eating nothing but rice and egg. I didn't have any energy and I just wanted to hide under the cover each and every day, hoping that tomorrow would never come. However, I had a certain belief that came with succeeding before. I did it once before, so I could do it again. Around the end of the year, I finally had the motivation to go out and try to work again.I succeeded for a short while, then I switched industries. I felt that I could get rich in the housing industry, as my friends were driving Lamborghinis and Porsches. I signed 25 purchase agreements for $250,000 homes and was on track to earning $600,000 in 2008. Then, Bear Stearns went down in a fire sale. I spent months trying to get my loans pushed through, but to no avail.Eventually, I gave up and moved into working at an investment fund. I was in charge of raising money as a broker, then was promoted to investor relations. Shortly afterwards, the stock market had crashed. My employer had lost the majority of his working capital in AIG and our company had to file bankruptcy. In the interim, I was out partying with models, popping bottles, and just having the time of my life in Hollywood. Then again, that was short lived. I was back on the ground, feeling absolutely defeated, without a clue what to do.Something new and unique came my way. Panic attacks. Anxiety. Feelings of death. No longer did those feelings of I could do it again come through my mind. Instead, I had reflected back upon how much I had lost, and how painful the experience was. I was so scared to relive the experience that my body just went of whack on me.A friend of mine, who had worked at the investment fund I was employed at had decided to start a lead generation firm with a few other partners. He had brought me on board. After about three months, I helped take that startup from $0 in revenue to $50,000 a month in revenue. However, the founder had decided that he wanted to change directions, and the company slowly collapsed. Before the collapse of the company, the founder of the company had said that he would help pay to fix my car, as the rear control arm had snapped. He decided to back out of that deal, and I was left holding a bill for a repair that I couldn't afford, without a source of income, and without a clue what to do with my life.I was at the bottom again.I just wanted to bury myself six feet under, because life just sucked. I didn't know what to do, so I stayed home and in bed until my money and financial resources were gone. I eventually decided to find a job, and was hired at AXA Equitable. There was a catch, I had to pass the life insurance test.Since I didn't have the resources to cover the cost of the training or test material, I had to find another job. I found anything I could, which was a minimum wage part time job, raising money for the Democratic National Committee. I looked rock bottom in the eye and saw that I was selling my soul. I wasn't selling this soul of mine to become rich, famous, or even successful. I sold my soul to survive.I'm not as bold as Ellen Vrana is, in stating that I'm a Republican in public, so I decided to hide this piece of information way down below in this story here. However, being a Republican and having to work for a cause that I had absolutely no belief in, was like having to live each and every day as a complete and utter lie. I was raising money for a cause that went against all of my natural beliefs. I had become a professional liar, all for a measly wage of $8 an hour.I never hit rock bottom before. However, when I looked in the mirror each morning, I realized that I wasn't me any longer. I was just this lost soul who had absolutely no clue what happened. I was a liar, who put on a mask, and lied to the entire world. Someone who couldn't even look at himself in the mirror, let alone get himself out of bed to face another day. One day, things were so bad, that the electricity shut off in my place. I never knew I could rack up an electricity bill to $400 before it was disconnected, but I guess I learn something new every day.I needed to escape, so I played hooky each chance I could. My friend was a sous chef at the time, so I escaped work to go with him to help him in the kitchen. Eventually, I learned how to cook. Then, my other friend had found an investor for his business and he brought me in. I started working with him, and then... On one random day, I had met someone at a bar. He was drinking blue label by himself in the corner, and I sat next to him. I inquired if it was his birthday, he looked at me with a weird stare. I advised him in this town, people only drink blue on two occasions, their birthday or a special occasion. I asked him which it was. He told me every day was his birthday. We stopped talking and continued to drink. I was on my last $20, sipping the one and only drink I could afford, then he turned to me and asked if I would like a shot. I agreed, then we talked. We connected at an intellectual level, and he decided to employ me. Suddenly, I had the money to do whatever I wanted. If I wanted to eat at Boa Steakhouse, no problem. If I wanted a limo, it was mine. If I wanted to spend a whole month drinking two bottles of blue label every night, no one was going to stop me. So I did it all. Then, unfortunate circumstances came my way once again.I was dismissed and left to go figure out life on my own. This time, I just froze. I was stuck. All I could think of doing was buying a bottle of Jameson every day, and drank my life away as I watched movies. I didn't get up, I didn't go out, I didn't do anything.Deep in my heart, I understood exactly where I was. I was a nobody, with nothing, and in a matter of months, I would be homeless and on the streets, to live my life forever as a permanent transient. This was my destiny, to become one with the world, living under a bridge, burning trash cans on fire and hoping to roast meals. This was the last time I would ever experience any type of happiness, and I would be forever placed into a life of despair.Little did I know, that this would be the day where my grandmother showed me her true love for me. She didn't let me fall to my demise, and instead, she took me back into her home and let me recover at her place. No longer was I disowned, but she showed me her true love. I spent the next 24 days, detoxing from all the alcohol and nicotine from my body. The panic attacks came back and my body flushed out all the toxins, and I felt like I was going to die.I stayed around at home, doing nothing but playing video games. My grandmother cooked for me and showed me her love. Eventually, we reestablished our once loving relationship, after almost a decade of being apart. As time progressed, she got fed up of me leeching off of her, so she told me that I needed to find a job.I didn't want to work, but I didn't want to be yelled at either.I decided that I would hate being yelled at more than being unemployed, so I went on Craigslist. I applied to about twenty jobs. I took the first job that called me back. The whole motivation behind finding a job wasn't to find something that I wanted to do, but to not be yelled at, so I didn't thoroughly research the company I had worked for.He had hired twenty people initially to do outside sales with the easiest task in the world. Within the first month, everyone, aside from me and two other people had quit. I hit my quota so I thought I would be getting my free iPad bonus that had been promised to me. Yet, that wasn't delivered. Then my cash payment plan was changed out to equity. I technically started working for free, he tried to make me feel better by giving me a ton of responsibilities, a VP of Marketing position, and handed me over a ton of worthless stock, that accounted for 5% of the company's worth.Eventually, I was fed up, so I left.I decided that I could no longer work in Orange County, nor freeload off my grandmother, so I decided it was time to move back to LA. I borrowed a few hundred dollars from my friend, which I have paid back, lived on a sofa and recovered. Eventually, I found the job I am at today. In the interim, I tried to do a few things. However, much like my other ventures, they all led to a failure. Now, I've been working here for the last two and a half years, in the exact same position, without moving up or down. I have had plenty of time to reflect back and figure out all the lessons that this life gave me.Through my personal time of reflection, I came to realize that most of the decisions I made throughout my life were made because I didn't understand my grandfather's death. Ultimately, I forgot who he was, and locked away the memories of how much he had loved me deep underneath my subconscious mind, and tossed away the key. This ended up being the underlying issue that has held me back and forced me to be a trapped victim of my own life, failing consistently. There are times when I can do nothing but think of how much my grandfather had loved me. What he had done to make me smile. How genuine and sincere he was. How unconditional the love he was which shared with me. I reflect back and look at how much of a disappointment I have been, since I didn't grow up to be like his image. I didn't grow up to be the man that he had raised me to become.I try my best, to live up to his image. To be like him. To help others. To smile. To share my love. Deep down inside my heart, I hope he is looking down on me and guiding me through life. One day, I hope that I can even make him proud, for the person I become. However, at the end of the day, sometimes all I can do is wonder, what in the world have I been doing with my life?Read more at my blog: What Is Your Life Story?Leonard Kim consults startups and writes books like The Etiquette of Social Media: How to Connect and Respond to Others in the World of Social Media

What are some possible reasons for Arvind Kejriwal's resignation as Chief Minister?

Arvind Kejriwal resigned because he engineered the situation so as to facilitate his resignation.Brace yourselves, this is a long answer. If you’d rather skip all the talk about their short lived term, please scroll down to the bolded “What did AAP do in 49 days?”I’ll lay out here the facts, hopefully without bias, and provide my comments as well, which will be biased. For all purposes, I will use ‘AAP’ and ‘Kejriwal’ interchangeably. Facts are in regular text and my comments are in italics.I’ll start with the manifesto. This consists of the promises they’ve made before coming into power, to be executed when they come into power.Aam Aadmi Party’s manifesto can be found here: Page on media2.intoday.in and File Shared from BoxThe main objectives outlined in this manifesto are:Delhi Jan Lokpal bill that would be passed within 15 days of coming into power. (Lokayukta would be modeled along this line, and all ministers and MLAs would come under its purview. Whistleblowers to be given protection)Devolving power directly to people. Introduction of Swaraj Bill. (Power to Mohalla Sabhas, approximately 3000 new Mohalla Sabhas)Full statehood to Delhi. (Police to be under govt’s control)Cutting electricity bills by half. (Audit distribution companies, independent agencies to check meters, withdraw cases against those who participated in civil disobedience earlier with AAP, Discoms brought under RTI)Clean water in every home, cited as the party’s first priority. I do not exaggerate, as almost everyone knows. Every.single.day, they’ve occupied more airtime than any other issue. {Edit: This may or may not be because of the media alone. But AAP ensures that if it's a slow news day, they have a plan.}I will now outline a timeline of AAP’s political and social activities each of the days they’ve been in power. Granted 2 years of paid leave in 2000 to pursue higher education on condition that upon resuming his work he would not resign from the Service for at least 3 years. Failure to abide by that condition would require him to repay the salary given during the leave period. Rejoined in 2003 and worked for 18 months before taking unpaid leave for 18 months. Resigned from his position as a Joint Commissioner of Income Tax in Feb 2006, in New Delhi. Government of India claimed that Kejriwal had violated his original agreement by not working for three years. Kejriwal refuted this, saying that 18 months of work and 18 months of unpaid absence amounted to the stipulated three year period during which he could not resign and that this was an attempt to malign him due to his involvement with Team Anna. The dispute ran for several years until, in 2011, it was resolved when he paid his way out of the Service with the help of loans from friends. Maulana Tauqeer Khan has ordered multiple fatwas and has announced a bounty for Taslima Nasreen’s head, all of which Kejriwal claims to have not known after his “chance” encounter with him on the streets.Dec 30: AAP attempts to implement their promise of 700l free water, but due to lack of pipelines and spiked costs, settles at 667 litres of water per household with pipelines, starting Jan 1st, 2014. Kejriwal clarifies that the decision is permanent, and not only for 3 months. The free water comes at a price though- a spike in water tariff of 10% for anyone consuming above this quantity. AK explains that this would cause a revenue loss for DJB of Rs. 160cr per year, and Rs. 40cr this year. Implementation of the system is expected to be faulty at best, as only a little over 65% of Delhi has pipelines, and the poor without water would continue to remain without water. Another issue raised was that the DJB has no existing system to measure the amount of water provided to a house or information on the population of an area, based on which water supply quantity is to be decided. This decision would cost the exchequer Rs. 200 crores practically (or Rs. 61 crores on paper). DERC claims that the government cannot fix the tariff as it’s a regulatory body issue. Kejriwal says that govt can’t fix the tariff but can provide subsidy (ie, compensate the power companies for the rest of the 50%, compensating for the loss incurred). Kejriwal requests CAG to order probe into 3 power distribution agencies. (Kejriwal’s new year gift to Delhi: 50% power subsidy), (AAP fulfills another poll promise: After free water,Delhi gets half-price power)There is a very obvious, huge, gaping flaw in this plan. 50% subsidy will cause a loss of Rs. 61 crores to the Delhi public, as admitted by Kejriwal. Slashing power tariff this suddenly to so many people would result in massive loss and mismanagement, as basic economics teaches. The budget is present for a reason. In effect, the government tells the public that they have 50% off on power, and then takes the rest of the money from the budget allocated to education or healthcare services. Or proceeds to increase the tax. Not to mention, charging higher tariff after 400 units in the middle of winter. A highly impractical system.Jan 2: AAP wins trust vote in Delhi Assembly. Expensive repair work on the twin bungalows is suddenly stopped, people question waste of tax payers’ money. The problem here isn’t the twin bungalows itself. Every minister gets bungalows. Kejriwal was perfectly entitled to live in them. However, he had made it very clear that he will not use government houses and vehicles if he came into power. So this move to live in bungalows was seen as rather hypocritical of him. For all practical purposes, he should have lived in those bungalows.{Edit: I‘ve been pointed out that Kejriwal was allotted two 5-bedroom duplex flats, not bungalows. The media has used the terms interchangeably. I’m trying to find the difference, but it looks like a duplex flat = bungalow is the way it has been used. So, to clarify, Kejriwal was allotted two five-bedroom duplex flats that he refused. And refused because “my friends, supporters have been calling me and sending messages saying I should not move into the five-bedroom flat. So, I have decided to forego them.” (Arvind Kejriwal rejects 5-bedroom house; requests government for smaller flat) Kejriwal also said that the houses that were allotted to him were much smaller than Sheila Dixit’s bungalow. This is the house that was allotted to Sheila Dixit (not her current residence) when she was reelected in 2008:This is the house that was given to Kejriwal:The government incurred expenses in trying to find a suitable accommodation for Kejriwal in the forthcoming days. (Page on firstpost.com)Jan 5: Prashant Bhushan starts trouble by stating that there should be a referendum in Kashmir to decide whether the army should take care of internal threats. Err. What? It’s your country, man. Don’t you want to defend it? I’m sorry, but this gets me very angry. Why would you want to take a poll to find out if people of your country want to be protected? Kejriwal clarifies that the view's are Bhushan's own and do not reflect that of the party.{Edit: I’ve drawn a lot of flak for stating that I’m angry that Bhushan made a comment like this. I’m surprised, considering that this issue is the least pertinent to Kejriwal’s resignation. But I’ll clarify my stand anyway.Asking for a referendum is wrong because of various reasons. I’ll simplify this with an example. Let’s suppose there is a gang fight on your street and ten policemen are deployed for the protection of the residents. Out of these ten men, two or three misbehave and cause trouble. But together, they protect the street and curb the violence. They keep away members from other gangs into entering your street, and prevent fighting within. Now, people who look at it from outside feel that the ten policemen’s presence is too much of a limitation, so they should be taken away. Is a referendum a fair deal? Most of the houses might vote yes, but is that the reasonable thing to do, to expose the residents to threats? Besides, you know that there are a few residents who are secretly aiding gangs. Wouldn’t pulling away the police force make it easier for them?Expand this to Kashmir. It is common knowledge that many Kashmiris want to secede to Pakistan and some aid infiltrations. But it is the duty of the Government of India and the Army to protect the citizens. Remember, there are still people who want to be a part of India. And even if everyone wants to be a part of Pakistan, removal of army presence is not justified. Indian Govt holds supreme authority over Kashmiri land and will continue to do so. India has deployed armed forces to protect the land. Stating that there should be a referendum is not just an insult to the Constitution and the Armed forces, but also a highly dangerous statement, bordering on sedition (depending on how you look at it). Kejriwal said that the feelings of the people must be taken into account, otherwise it is a threat to democracy. No, it is ideas like these that are a threat to democracy. Going by Kejriwal’s contradictory statement, elections are a threat to democracy, considering the number of people who vote against a party that eventually comes into power.Re: “internal threats”, yes, it’s the duty of the government to protect against internal threats. There is no dearth of militancy in Kashmir – Pakistani or Indian. The nature of the conflict in the area and the geography of the land, coupled with the weather and the mostly sparse population, mandates an army presence, as opposed to a police presence. It’s common sense. It’s also an issue of national security. That cannot be decided by referendums. Should we take referendums for Naxalites? For Arunachal Pradesh? For Tamil Nadu coasts? Bhushan also said that he believes Kashmir is an integral part of India (Prashant Bhushan does U-turn on Kashmir) Then why did he make the referendum comment, instead of defending the troops in Kashmir? Bhushan’s exact statement is here: Prashant Bhushan for referendum on Army's J&K deployment Secession is unconstitutional, so should be avoided, he says. So 1. What is the point of the referendum, and 2. Why was it okay when passing the Jan Lokpal was unconstitutional? Kejriwal later states that Bhushan withdrew his comment about the referendum, and asks if people want to kill him or Bhushan for it. Do they want to kill me for Prashant Bhushan's J&K remark? Kejriwal asksAs to why Bhushan should not have made that comment: It is very easy to state that the remark that was made was by an individual and not the entire party. It might be Prashant Bhushan’s personal view, as Kejriwal was quick to clarify. But that is just a statement of convenience. If the view had been endorsed, it would have been a victory for the party. It drew criticisms, so it’s a personal view. Going by this, why was Binny expelled for stating his personal views about the party? It’s also a classic votebank move. Now, if and when AAP campaigns in Kashmir, Bhushan would go. The people would remember his statements (although they do not reflect the party’s) and vote for AAP. Stating that it’s a personal opinion makes it very easy for any member of any party to get away with any controversial statement. Had such a statement been made against more sensitive issues like riots or reservations, the issue would have escalated. Other parties are quick to reprimand their members who make controversial comments, but AAP chooses to field its candidates, with no apology. A party is voted for its idealogy, which is not always explicitly stated. It’s the members of a party that project the kind of ideas and stances parties take on issues. }AAP promises to initiate schemes for labour and against contract workers, as stated in their manifesto. Homeless people died again? No, these cops are more important. The protest would take place in the most protected zone of Delhi’s region, owing to the upcoming Republic Day parade. Kejriwal urges the public to not come join them, citing the issue of disturbance and safety, saying that the protest would only be undertaken by members of the AAP. However, AAP sends undercover messages to AAP units in Haryana and UP to mobilize crowds. (AAP govt told people to stay away from dharna, but quietly mobilised the crowds)Later in the day, Kejriwal calls out to the public, going back on his word, and join them. He also urges the police to throw away their uniform and join them. This is yet another instance of promoting anarchy. Asking people who are supposed to uphold the law to abandon their duties and join in breaking the law. Who would control the massive crowds, then? As Kejriwal wasn’t allowed to take the protest outside the Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde’s office, he launches his protest outside Rail Bhavan. Four metro stations shut down. The protests causes security concerns as the Republic Day parade is scheduled six days hence, with full dress rehearsals in three days. The parade is scheduled to take over the area 72 hours before the Republic Day. The threat of terrorism is high, and classified weaponry and crafts of the Indian military, navy, and airforce are scheduled to be present. Kejriwal dismisses security concerns, stating that there is no point in the Parade as the women in our country are not safe. Kejriwal refuses to take the protest to Jantar Mantar, despite the fact that it is an area of high security that has prohibitory orders on it to allow gatherings of more than 5 people, although he is causing major damages to security. (On Day 2 of Arvind Kejriwal's protest, four metro stations, roads near India Gate closed)I see two problems here. One is that Bharti, his own member, attacked women. Secondly, can a sworn in official talk like this about the Republic day? The parade is a source of major pride to all of us Indians, and is a display of the strength of our defense. It is honoring the military, navy, and airforce if anything. It is a nation-wide event. Kejriwal insulted and demeaned our military, and is now causing lakhs of rupees worth of security concerns (causing tax payer money, how do people not see that?). Instead, he chooses to give precedence to suspension of five cops for carrying out their duty and failing to obey their ministers. The protest turns unruly, with AAP volunteers jumping barricades and getting violent, hurting two policemen with stone pelting. The police is then forced to lathi charge. AAP members call the police brutal.Kejriwal defends Bharti by producing letters written by residents of Khirki extension to Bharti. (Former Attorney General Soli Sorabjee backs Lt Governor Najeeb Jung's decision)Man who threw a shoe at P Chidambaram is now an AAP member and will contest LS polls. (AAP fields man who hurled shoe at P Chidambaram for Lok Sabha polls)Kejriwal appears for multiple interviews. States that since the Lokpal bill wasn’t passed, he saw no sense in continuing. (Since Jan Lokpal was blocked, saw no sense in continuing as Chief Minister, says Arvind Kejriwal: highlights)Of course, other points of the manifesto don’t hold a candle to the Lokpal Bill.He also states that he had inside information that Congress and BJP will allow the bill to pass, but after his filing an FIR on Mukesh Ambani, they would not allow it.AAP releases list of first 20 candidates for LS polls.Today, he was again on TV at CII. The point is, they’re still in the news every hour of every day, and for mostly the wrong reasons. When it’s a slow news day, they seem to have strategized press conferences. It’s a brilliant tactic, fully utilizing the “bad publicity is also good publicity” idea and constantly remaining in the public eye. What did AAP do these 49 days?Revoked FDI in retail, causing investment losses; introduced a water tariff cut that was extremely arbitrary as there are still no means to measure water supply and consumption, and not enough connectivity to provide free water to poor people; cut the electricity bill by 50% at the cost of Rs. 61 crore to the exchequer; take to the streets to protest against five cops and to get them suspended, only to call off the protest when two of them are sent on paid leave, causing thousands of rupees worth of damages to the Delhi public; attempt to table a Jan Lokpal bill unconstitutionally, that superseded the bill at the center; resign. The bigger picture here is that the whole situation was a win-win for Kejriwal. If he stays in power, well, he stays in power. If he resigns, he’ll be seen as a martyr who had to forego his Chief Ministership because the opposition did not allow anti-corruption reforms. Every action Kejriwal took was backed by the proclamation that he was fighting corruption. One cannot fight illegal problems by creating new illegal problems. But since it went against establishment and the established government at the Centre is corrupt, Kejriwal is going to be touted as a hero. This is exactly what has happened, and nothing could be farther from the truth. A simple look at the condition Delhi is in right now will tell. A simpler look at AAP’s 18 point manifesto is even more telling. What are the implications of his resignation? Here’s a sample:In a classic case of votebank politics, AAP declared a fee waiver of 50% to all members of the Delhi Public who support the AAP in agitation. On the day that Kejriwal resigned, he also piloted the appropriation bill (in the proper manner, might I add) to designate Rs. 372 crores towards subsidy for power companies. This sum was drawn from a consolidated fund from the Infrastructure and PWD budget allocation for Delhi. Now, he also has to subsidize the Rs. 6 crore loss caused due to the 50% tariff on the public. Since the specific relief to defaulters was not a part of the original manifesto, AAP has not worked out where the 6 crores are to come from. Now, the discomms are at a loss as to how to recover their share of the subsidy. Delhi is to expect power outages. (AAP ki sarkar's bonanza for power defaulters a hogwash? - The Times of India)Similarly, Delhi does not have water. There is water shortage, and there is an artificial water shortage created by the tanker mafia. Kejriwal promised water to all in his election manifesto, but settled for a certain amount for free water for every house that has a connection. Herein lies the problem. Not every house has a connection! Like I said before, only 65% of the population has water connections. 7 lakh households are not linked to the water grid. This means that people who have water already are going to get surplus water, and the ones who need the water are still in the same situation as before. Now, the “free” water isn’t technically free. It costs money to deliver and supply the water, and money is needed for the human labor and physical infrastructure. Where is the money going to come from? Tax, of course. Everyone pays taxes. But the poor (who do not have water) are now going to end up paying for the excess water the rich get. Economist Surjit Bhalla points out here (Not so aam aadmi policy), at 670 litres per household per day, the AAP government is basically giving every individual the right to consume around 170 litres of water a day free. This is much higher than developed countries like UK or USA. AAP’s decision to charge consumers for the entire amount consumed should they go even one litre above 670 a month will only encourage the manipulation of water meters on a gigantic scale, rather than rationalise consumption. It’s easy to look at this short sightedness and proclaim initial victory because most of Delhi might be (or might not be, I’m not sure, are you all?) getting free water. But this populist decision will hit and hit hard. AAP is wasting away the Rs. 446 crore profit made by the DJB, instead of utilizing it to improve infrastructure so as to provide water to all households, 24x7. Make no mistake, this decision was regressive, and if implemented, might just drag the Delhi govt into bankruptcy. Kejriwal’s plans have created problems, not solutions. (A better articulated piece is here: Page on firstpost.com) Here’s a completely simple article that states exactly what the problem is: Asit K Biswas & Cecilia Tortajada: Delhi's water supply - Going, going, gone? The Lokpal bill is the easiest argument of Kejriwal’s to refute, because you do not need any understanding of civics or economics to see the problem here. Why did Kejriwal quit?Because the Jan Lokpal bill was not passed. So?He said that he would quit if the Lokpal Bill was not passed, and he did. What’s wrong in that?A zillion things. Firstly he said that only on the 9th( he quit on the 14th). And saying that he will quit does not justify his quitting. Any government can now take a stance, saying that they would quit if a condition of theirs isn’t met. Let it be a condition built on the core principle of a party, it does not justify the quitting. If Kejriwal felt the parties were not cooperating in passing the bill, he should have gone to the LG and gotten it approved and passed it. If he didn’t want to do that, he could have amended the existing Lokpal bill of the Centre and implemented the Jan Lokpal, like so many other states have done. Remember, he said that he would go to any extent and do whatever it takes to get the Jan Lokpal passed. Well, it’s not passed. If he didn’t want to pass it, he could have let the situation be, used Congress and BJP as an excuse, and focused on other problems, like power and water. As an elected representative, he owed this to the public. He promised to quit if the bill isn’t passed, fair enough. He also promised to implement a lot of other things when he came to power. Where are those things now? How is the public even accepting his resignation as a sign of integrity when it’s nothing but running away from responsibilities? Is the public of Delhi so easily fooled and so short sighted that they accept a “because I said so” argument from a person they themselves elected? Bear no doubt, it was a brilliant political move by Kejriwal, for the party’s benefit. But it’s the public that is going to suffer. What’s the plan for Delhi now?Nobody has any idea. It is under the President’s rule, for now. But we don’t know if Delhi is going to get free water and power. We don’t know when the reelections are and who would win. AAP is now focusing on LS, so Kejriwal is out of running for the Chief Minister’s post again.Manish Sisodia is to be the CM candidate, while Kejriwal aims for Lok Sabha elections. (Good luck, Delhi!)AAP was a shining beacon of hope, full of opportunities. Powerful people like Kiran Bedi and even populists like Chetan Bhagat (sorry CB!) were very prominent supporters of AAP, and are now disillusioned with their politics. As are ordinary people like myself and many others who voted the party into power. Now what happens to the water supply? Are people going to get free water still? What about electricity? AAP is now putting its full effort in contesting the Lok Sabha elections, so what happens to the Jan Lokpal? Where are the educational reforms that were promised? What happened to converting buses to homes for the poor? Did anyone compensate the families of those who died in the streets? Did AAP compensate the families of military men, as promised? A government’s first duty is towards the people. What did AAP do for the people, and I’m talking majority of the people? Ban red beacons? How long is it going to take for them to come back? Where is the sewage plan, the waste management plant, the rainwater harvesting plan? Where are the new schools and colleges? What happens to the 90% reservation? What happened to making Urdu the second language? What happened to the 25 people who died because of the cold when Kejriwal was sitting in his dharna? What happens now to the foreign investment losses due to the sudden recall of FDI? And most importantly, why did Kejriwal not order probe into the CWG scam that took place under Sheila Dixit as soon as he assumed office? Is this the man our country deserves as a Prime Minister? Someone who can’t fulfill basic promises or expend the money in his possession in a progressive manner? Someone who is elected, but quits in less than 50 days without making a single progressive reform? While I know that there are thousands of supporters of AAP, and even here on Quora, I have to say, Delhi has lost a hard won battle, thwarted of its gifts by false promises. Kejriwal obtained the trust and votes of the Delhi public, but in all appearances, when he realized he could not manage the government, he bolted. I’d say he betrayed their trust. And I was one of the people who had high hopes for them, mind you. I’ll clarify that. I wanted them to come to power and to take on an anti corruption and developmental role.Congress and BJP are distasteful because they fool the millions of illiterates and uneducated people by buying their votes and making promises just before the elections. AAP is dangerous because they fool the educated public with their tactics and clever concealment of the full picture.I sincerely hope there is a reelection, and AAP wins again. They must clean up their mess.Note: I know this would invite a lot of comments and disagreement. I kindly request posters to stick to BNBR. Since I have tried very hard to not bring up Congress or BJP or any other political party as a comparison in this answer, please try to refrain from doing so unless necessary. If your retaliation is “But Congress did it and ten years ago, BJP also did it,” your point is moot, as you’re resorting to the exact argument used by Congress and BJP representatives, and are no different from them. And please, do not downvote comments you do not agree with, as has happened in other answers.

What is the single most effective piece of financial advice you've ever received?

As soon as I landed in Canada, I met one very young European guy, a little older than me, I was in the early ’20s, and he was in mid 20′s. This young man was fortunate and he like me came to Canada, penniless however he was pure genius. Here is what he taught me:1. New Car: Do not buy a new car unless it is such a great deal that it is too good to pass. ( A nicely maintained Demo, lightly used rental, A rear-ended accidental but no frame damage, and win a lottery. I was fortunate, when in 1980 Chrysler was in the bit of trouble, one dealership in Toronto auctioned off new cars. I was successful in getting one such beauty for a reasonable price. The vehicle was Aspen, and the price at the auction was much lower than the used car. My family and I enjoyed that car for a good 14 years with TLC.Not to brag: In case you are willing to work hard, you may get a car/s “ upper fixer” and live happily ever after.2. Credit Rating: Never spoil your credit score at any cost.3. Insurance Rating: Never spoil your insurance rating at all4. Drink and Drive: Never drink and drive. Also: Do not drink at office parties even if you self-employed be extra careful and misbehave, it may end up your career/business., You may suffer financial blow you may not recover forever. I have seen a few cases like this. Also: Never tell dirty jokes at work environment, it may finish you too. Also: Never start a love affair/side gig/ at work/business. It is almost may end in disaster in a family, work and financial life. For example, Some medical doctors lost their licenses it is not a myth, some landlords gained a bad reputation, and so on…Never mix business and pleasure, these two mixes are very lethal. Keep your love life; alcohol, dirty jokes separate from the job/business. You may get a few laughs at your jokes at work, but you are not hired to act like a clown/joker and buffoon. Kiss it goodbye to higher positions or business.5. Never pay Rent*: Never pay rent for living, buy your own even if it is a shack.Special Note*: (One viewer pointed out, in some places renting is better, and I must mention in temporary/uncertain situations in life, renting is the only choice). In such a case, try your best to invest in some real estate.6. Economic/Frugal: Live frugal as much as you can. The more you sacrifice at a young age, the more you and your family will reap benefits in the old age. This young man my mentor had the wisdom of Warren Buffet he advised me almost the same thing but in different words:do not save what is left after spending:7. Pay off the debt and stay debt free*: Pay off the house even if it is a hut, a car also it is a rundown junk, and keep enough money for food for your young wife and two little monkeys. And stay debt free if you can for rest of your life.*Special note: Debt free means no loan/mortgage on principal house/car/In case you do not have these liabilities bank looks at you very favorably and you can borrow for business with more ease.Debt free means just do not put yourself in debt for a vacation, of course, you have to borrow money for the business.8. Cut down invisible bonds if you can (9 to 5 job): Now you have cut down all the burdens by paying a debt. You are a free man, now show the world your real stuff made of hard and smart work. Find your strength, weakness and weigh your aims and aspirations, and find your path of working for yourself.Well, this 9 to 5, Monday to Friday, your mind is all wired for routine. Very few may become wealthy working for others, but most of us would end their lives with mediocre living. You may or may not grow affluent working for yourself, but you have a better chance of making it.9. Once you do the above: Now work even harder, than before. Kick some real action/s in life, save money big time and invest very wisely.10. Never go superfluous*: At weddings, birthdays, and other so-called parties and celebrations.Latest birthday celebration: I baked the cake, decorated it, for my wife, (total cost ten Canadian dollars), she loved this birthday surprise. As said earlier, we found happiness does not come spending too much money but expressing real love/affection for the family and each other. BTW, this case is fat and sugar-free, guilt-free and we both ate it to the last bite.Celebrating my wife’s birthday, you do not need a crowd to cheer, you do not need fancy, decorations, cakes and screamers. All you need respect, real feelings and an effort in the Kitchen to bake a very healthy cake without sugar and fat. I used mostly drained Ricotta Cheese, very few raisins, a bit of flour, a few egg whites and baked it.When the boys were growing up, we celebrated their birthday with home baked cake and no big drama.A total Waste: Except for parents/grandparents/wife/husband/son/grandson direct blood relation, no one gives a damn, eat drink and leave dirty dishes for you to clean. We did that one and found out it was a total waste of time and money. Goodbye to such nonsense except our immediate family. The tremendous amount of food/drinks wastage, people usually bring one bottle of beer/drink and take a few sips and drop it there. Go and get another one, you do the math of plates and plates full of food overfilled due to greed, then unfinished and left over. Goodbye, thank you, no more. Young girls/women all dolled up, and sit on the chairs, like celebrities with an attitude you invited us what you can do for me? Men were usually busy in talking politics, and half drunk was no help either. We all members of the family running around, serving and taking care of half drunks. Now there was a significant job of clean up, and a tremendous amount of waste.Goodbye to Parties: Goodbye to parties forever and an enormous amount of waste of resources and money without one cent worth of benefit.Goodbye to False Dramas: Only for the false glory of a few minutes /hours or a day, some young families carry the financial burden for years. MONEY PROBLEMS” is one of the main reasons for unhappy marriage and divorce. You may have fireworks at the wedding but a wildfire in your marriage later on.Real Love/Affection /Feelings do not Need Drama: One heart transmits, and the other receives the right signals, try, it works. When at our lean times, I used to bring glass bangles, and hand-spun clothing (Khadi suits) for my wife she still enjoys it and remembers our time of pure love for each other.Special Note*: It does not mean we live like “ bums” and penny pinching miserable ways, she has her way of investments and treating herself appropriately where she sees a good value for our money. So is right for our sons and grandsons.11. Education is the best investment*: He(my European mentor) strongly advised me to go back to the university to get a Canadian degree. My wife also followed my example and trained for another profession of Nursing. My mentor said: No matter what, invest and put every effort in the education of your kids, according to him it is the very best and ultimate investment.Special Note*: Money saved and not squandered away when your son/daughter gets admission to Ivy league with over 55,000 US dollar tuition, you do not freak out. Education is going to be even more expensive; parents must have help otherwise the kid is not going to come out of college loan for a long time.12. Try to finish your child’s education as quickly as you can putting them on a fast track: One of our boys was incredibly hard working and smart, he completed his high school three years ahead of time. At 20 he was fully qualified Electrical Engineers, the going rate in Canada for that qualification was 50 thousand a year in the late 90 s. Since he finished three years ahead of time and started working, 150,000 Canadian dollars put in a bank, will give him more or less somewhere 10 to 19 million on the date of retirement.13. My family and I never looked back: We all lived extremely frugal, the second generation became even more careful, and the third generation of our two monkeys 3 and 5 ask the economics of going to a fun park.14. Financial wisdom starts very early on*:*My five years old grandson asked me the other day: Grandpa why don’t we play in the backyard with you, and grandma and mom can make pizza here at home. Why do we have to waste money at the fun park? Both boys are taught how to put money in the piggy bank, and they are both in a competition who has more. They both sit down and count almost every day. When asked what are you going to do with this money, the older one was quick to point out: Put it in the bank, mom/dad say it grows faster there.Special note*: This is not starving you and your family from a beautiful experience of the outside world, eating out and worldly exposure. The point here is kids must understand the value of money and saving. BTW, these two children have seen a fair bit by the time one is five, and the other is three. They have traveled extensively, know about eating out, and every weekend is a new ventureThe Best Way to Bank Your Kid's SavingsNo doubt training starts at the birth, sure these kids learned from their mother and father (our 2nd generation).Special note*: Here the idea is to teach a kid value of money than to buy sugar loaded candies at a convenience store. Bank deposit/investment comes later."Remember the laugh we had when we traveled together to Hong Kong and decided to get lunch at McDonald's? You offered to pay, dug into your pocket, and pulled out … coupons!" writes Bill. In this world almost everyone like saves money but they do not like the label “ Cheap.” Honestly, our family does not care you can call me or us “Cheap” “Frugal” or “Economical” “ Penny Saver.”15. Stay away from all criminal activities: Even a slight misbehavior or mistake or stupidity such as minor shoplifting will create a lifetime of a black spot against the name. Once someone has terrible credit, insurance, and even minor criminal offense, the story is almost over in Canada/USA. Might as well pack and come home, it is a more or less end of future. To keep these records immaculate are the precursors for financial success in these countries.16. You want to get ahead and have very secure old age, leave a legacy for your next generations of actions, useful life, and financial security.Do the followings when you are young. My family and I were ridiculed,i the best compliment to my wife and me: Mom and dad, you gave us the very best training in managing our finances. Thank you, and dad.*Do not worry about the ridicule: In the end, you will have the last laugh. When you kids and grandkids look at bright future with super education and financial security, then you will see your future bright clear and worth it.a. Get yourself a freezer, when the food is the season, process your own and preserve it.b. Look for bargains in food/clothing (end of a season) is items are sometimes give away.c. Teach your kids/grandkids value of money, investment, savings. Food buying, processing, cooking at home, packing a brown bag.d. Teach your kids/grandkids very healthy eating, exercise and outshine in school, real hobbies, working with others.e. Before you jump around and buy brand new, look around for used one firstf. When we around the world is full of opportunities, increase your incomes, part-time jobs, weekend work, starting a small business.g. Create your opportunities, growing up in India, in those days money was extremely tight. This example is not bragging or beat my chest. My childhood friend was incredibly innovative, another angel in my life, this is what we did to fend off very tight situation for our personal needs.1. We always found work on summer vacation.2. My friend and I watched one science program it was a live show, he fired our brain about small gadgets (Hans Raj Wireless). We got a lot of ideas from that show, in grade 7, my friend and I started assembling cigarette lighters(Electric) for Pan Shops in Chandigarh. Before that, they used to have a burning /smoldering rope to light cigarettes. It is a long story about design and first blow up and then modifications, but the excellent outcome in the end.3. From there we started installing ceiling fans.4. It graduated to doing tuition by the time we were in http://B.Sc.5. We also ventured in making paper bags for grocery stores.6. We both had reasonably good clothes, eat out once in a while, and could afford good lunch at the college/school. And going to a traditional coffee house in Sector 17 Chandigarh (India) was not a huge problem. We always had enough change with our odd jobs here and there.7. We both treated ourselves right to a healthy dose of Indian movies. Both our boys adopted the same skills, of working part-time, excellent with tools, hard work, fixing things and being creative. I hope this trend continues to the third generation.Special note*: Here the idea is to buy smart at the right time not to starve/live like bums, but to buy things at the right time.Disclaimer: One viewer pointed out, our grandkids and we are missing out seeing the world. Well, that is not true. By the time they are sixteen, I estimate there will not much-civilized world left for them to see.( One viewer pointed out “some people might get turned away by the suggestion of extreme austerity.” This example is not to brag or show off; our preferences are different from investing and spending money.)Our two grandsons, five and three, are the two most precious jewels for us, and we are making sure to provide, as much as we can.We all are different, and our preferences for spending, dreams, aspirations, and aims are different.
