PDF Editor FAQ

I’ve decided to study psychology but I’m not sure if I should go for clinical/counseling or school psychology. Which is better in terms of experience, money, and job outlook?

As it stands today. Psychology, as most people are not even aware the depth, and breadth, is one of the most diverse studies on the planet. It has currently 14 sanctioned fields of study. What does it mean to be a sanctioned field of study. Well, simply put it means that it is universally recognized not only by a number of elite boards of higher education but also that of academic sciences and even that of the World Health Organization as being completely acceptable and legitimate.14 fields, that is a lot. Now they all have Doctorate PhD degrees, a handful also offer in addition Doctorate PsyD degrees. So, what is the difference. I can explain. A PhD degree is necessary for anyone who is going to step into the world post graduate as a Researcher of that of a Collegiate Educator or Professor if you prefer.Whereas a PsyD is more geared to train and discipline one who’s primary interest is to interact with day to day people in a one on one environment or situation.Where the greatest demand today, worldwide is in the field of Clinical Psychology, and saying as such it is ideal to find an institute that offers both a PhD and a PsyD, and garner both Doctorate degrees. Yes, it takes more time, but the rewards are worth it. One learns greater tolerance, compassion, empathy, and on top of that discipline over one’s own emotions when dealing with any given one on one situation and maintaining complete and total control. This is the benefit of the PsyD.Titles may vary in different countries, but in most places there really is not what one would call a ‘Clinical Counselor’. Counselor is technically a title handed out to one who has nothing more than a Masters or Bachelors degree in Psychology, even if it was in the field of Clinical Psychology. Then some counselors have voiced the opinion that therapist is merely a matter of semantics and they have the right to call themselves therapists. Of course I do not agree because I am the one who put in the extra effort, the longer terms of education, the higher learning curve in order to gain the highest level of learned knowledge that one is awarded with the highest academic achievement of a Doctorate degree.Think of it this way. Who has more knowledge and experience in understanding and utilizing knowledge? A high school graduate or a university graduate? Well certainly not the high school graduate. Now, let’s pare this down again. Who has the advantage? A high school graduate or a grade 7 dropout? Well it stands to reason that the one with the diploma is the one who will get the better job opportunities. Now let’s step it up to the university level. Who has the higher knowledge, understanding, comprehension, utilization of tools & skill and discipline. The one who jumped ship after getting a Masters or a Bachelors or the one that went all of the way and earned a PhD Doctorate degree. Here is some trivia. The actual term Doctor originally applied only to those who possessed an academic Doctorate degree, of which the most common is a PhD which roughly translates into Doctorate of Philosophy of ………So, myself, I have studied in 10 of the 14 fields of Psychology, I have PhD degrees in all 10 and in 4 of those ten I also hold PsyD degrees. Outside of Psychology I also have a PhD in Philosophy, (which sort of sounds redundant since it does translate into Doctorate of Philosophy of Philosophy). I also hold a PhD is Social Anthropology. In addition to those Doctorate degrees, I also hold either Masters or Bachelors in assorted fields such a Human Biology, Human Physiology, Neurosciences, History, Political Science, Global Economics, Literature (not to be confused with English, I am terrible at proper English), Religious Studies, and finally the Fine Arts. Many have asked me how and why bother. Both are easy to answer. The how is a result of over 20 years of advanced education in 4 elite universities in 4 different countries, Canada, USA, England and Scotland. As to the why, because there is a connection. Being a polymath (a person who has studied in multiple fields) provides a wider spectrum of evaluating how humanity evolves in the manner of the human psyche of human behavior within the human condition.I knew at a very young age where I wished to set my goals, and like many in my profession it was a result of experiencing epic traumas of life that would typically cripple most people for the rest of their lives, but somehow we found a way to navigate out of the trauma and felt that there was a better way to approach the hazards of life without the negative impact of Psychiatry throwing drugs at the problem as a band aid or an aspirin to provide temporary relief of symptoms. That is only effective until the band aid falls off and the injury is again exposed, or the symptoms return and require yet another pill to provide succor to the ill effect.Psychiatry does not resolve mental health issues, it merely prolongs it.Thus, I can not fairly tell you what is best or ideal for you. We are all each individual and unique independent entities. The onus is on each and everyone of us to exercise our sentient intellectual given right to free will. Free will which is our ability to choose or to decide what we want to direct our own paths and destinies. It is okay to take inspiration, but I frown upon idolization or copycat ideals. Look, I have been inspired by the likes of Leonardo da Vinci and he wasn’t a Psychologist, and the only thing we have in common is that we are both polymaths, but he came by his naturally because he was so damn gifted. I had to earn my distinction the hard way, also we are both autodidacts. I am an autodidact in my spare time, learning is not something one should just one day decide to stop doing. Why? Because that would be telling we have no reason to activate those millions of dormant brain cells that are on standby waiting to be activated with purpose. In summary, I explained the greatest need globally is that of Clinical Psychologists that are well trained and equipped with the best knowledge and that means at least having a PhD but having also a PsyD is preferable, and specifically in Clinical Psychology. I have worked mostly as a therapist in Clinical Psychology, but it is not the only Psychological field I worked in, I worked in each field that was specific to the field of Psychological study. For example from my PhD in Industrial & Organizational Psychology, which is streamlined for the improvement of a workplace environment to increase productivity and work life quality. Yet these days, few places are even hiring such professionals, they have fallen prey to capitalistic corporate downsizing. Otherwise, considered non essential.Which adds to the problem of Clinical therapists, because so many I/O Psychologists have been kicked to the curb, they simply apply for a license to be a therapist and the bureaucracy who handles the Departments of Licensing takes a look at their degree that states PhD Psychology, takes their license fee, and rubber stamps them through. They are not that prepared to be clinical psychologists, but that does not stop them from trying.Myself, I have moved on, for the most part, I am now employed under the umbrella of Forensic Psychology which still only offers a PhD, but I have been lobbying for a PsyD for the simple reason that Forensic Psychology Agents have to interview the accused, the witness, the prosecutor, the defense lawyer, the police and other law enforcement officers and yes, even the jury. The new approach that Forensic Psychology has taken in Criminal Law is not to establish guilt but instead to determine innocence. Otherwise reverse the ideal of guilty until proven innocent even though the law states, innocent until proven guilty. Which ironically is the very reason why Lady Justice is blind.Point being is that far too many people are being put into the system for crimes they did not commit simply because they happened to be handy and somehow managed to loosely fit some witnesses description. Look, I have long grey/white hair that I keep tied up and a classic grey/white beard of the late 1800s, early 1900s or that of ancient Greece so either that of Wilhelm Wundt (early Psychologist) or that of Plato (really early Psychologist/Philosopher). Properly coifed and wearing a suit, no one gives me a second look or thought, but grabbing my newspaper off my stoop first thing in the morning has caused recently moved in neighbors to call the police in because they suspect a deranged psychopath is living on their street. No, I don’t look my best before my morning coffee. Yet every time, they assume I am a poacher, and that I don’t belong. Yet I find it ironic that they don’t see the resemblance when a taxi, (well an Uber these days) shows up and picks up a well dressed older gentleman in a suit wearing a fashionable fedora, and is bespectacled in equally fashionable glasses. Does this prove that only paranoid people get up earlier than others and are peeking out their curtains and blinds?Luckily, the local police already know who and what I am and do what it takes to explain the situation to quiet their suspicions. Still, I have had to enjoy the company of the odd suspicious neighbor to finally belay their fears. I usually win them over by telling them I typically charge about $500.00 for an evening like that because it was equal to two sessions. Which then I point out, I also do not provide free services.Of course, there are always those who offer their free advise, suggesting that I should cut my hair and get rid of my beard, but then I explain, that would put me out of my own comfort zone. One only has to look upon the parable of Samson and Delilah where Samson’s revealed that his strength was in his long hair, and Delilah betrayed Samson by cutting it. The moral here is not about the loss of strength, it is about Samson loss of his comfort zone and the faith he put in it, and it also about the betrayal. Then later on the tale was sort of repeated for the sake of Christianity as in the betrayal of Jesus by Judas Iscariot, which took Christ out of his comfort zone and into the arms of his enemies, detractors and finally executioners that vaulted Christ into martyrdom.I simply prefer to keep and maintain my comfort zone, because it has always been the promise and guarantee I have offered my clients of a safe and comfortable zone with the highest regard to confidentiality, I have even offered Non Disclosure Agreements (NDA), that I initially pay for. Now the problem with the NDA is that there is always a written time limit placed upon them. Even that I assure my clients that I still will vault their files with safe confidentiality, they are free to renew the NDA’s at their cost. The main difference between myself and many therapists is that I practice resolve, healing and closure. Which means I help the client identify with their issue, accept their issue, then teach them how to maintain, manage, control and discipline the behavioral patterns and moods of their disorder. Do not assume this is a cure, it is not. They still are who and what they are, but instead of suffering, they have learned to live and adapt to existing with the disorder otherwise they have become high functioning within their disorder. They no longer need therapy or treatment. We part company, I’ve released a client back into mainstream society and no one is the wiser. They leave with self confidence, high self esteem and stable social skills.Yet I have seen people on this site who state that they have spent years, even decades in therapy. I fail to find logic, reason, rationale or even common sense in why. I can only draw a few conclusions. First of course is that the client has a strong need for that constant attachment and attention of a therapist, now some can refer to it as being Munchausen Syndrome, but personally, I identify it as it being an out and out addiction. The pure definition of addiction is, that which one can not live or function without. Another conclusion lays at the feet of the therapist who does not put enough effort in treatment because having long term clients is, well, a financial flow or what I call, a cash cow.So when you mentioned money in your inquiry, I had to cringe. I have been successful, but I have never done nor do what I do, for the sake of financial independence. In fact I spend faster than I can make it. I have put most of my earnings back into research projects and also I have practiced in pay back. That means that I have sponsored a few private scholarships in the past, but now I just donate to foundations and organizations that specifically support advanced education. Doing my own independent scholarships, was over my head because the requests for handouts became overwhelming. It is best to leave it to the millionaires and the billionaires who are the philanthropists who are best suited to such skills. I was not anywhere in their league. Now I live almost like a pauper, and spend all of my income on traveling and accommodations. No sense in being miserable while doing research or criminal investigation. I still keep my Clinical Psychological license active, but I do not hang a shingle anywhere, and I only do specialized contractual work, from time to time. I am not even listed. The parties that require my services and pay handsomely for it, know how to contact me.I will be 66 years old in July 2020. Yet other than a few physical annoyances that come naturally with age, my mind and thought process is as healthy if not more so than a youth of 27 years. Intelligence Quotient (IQ) is not a constant as so many people believe. Quite the opposite, it is a variant. So, if one is gifted and born with natural high intelligence, it comes down to the individual’s desire to absorb and assimilate (yeah I know, sounds like The Borg from Star Trek) knowledge and understanding, the more one’s IQ will increase during development. Now if a child just sees things and then decides not to engage or interact, but to simply acknowledge things are happening, then their IQ will stagnate and even drop. The earliest that one should be tested for IQ is around the age of six but organizations such as MENSA like to jump the gun and test as early as four and even three, and they do so by adapting their own IQ testing for infantile testing. Which is more external using physical blocks and shapes to test hand and eye coordination. I was first tested by MENSA at six, and they wanted to haul me off to a ‘special’ school and I refused to go and my father supported me, where my mother really wanted me to go. Stands to reason, she was the one with the higher intelligence and education, but my father had greater practical sense even though he was an eighth grade dropout. He had instinct and became one of the best horse breeders and trainers for a large area. He also bred and trained dogs, Shetland Sheepdogs, or also known as Shelties. Which often get confused with miniature collies. No, miniature collies are cute enough, but are shaky, timid, and not very bright. Shelties which look very much like its larger cousin the Rough Collie is extremely intelligent, very trainable, entertaining, attentive, and loads of fun. My father had an instinct for all animals and had no fear of any animal, and most animals sense fear most of all and are always on the offensive defense, ready to spring into action reliant only on their instinct of fight or flight. Thus when there is no fear factor, the only thing that remains is a higher sense of curiosity. The time I have seen my father just walk up to animals anywhere from deer to bears and not get attacked or frightened the animal off, has left me in awe every time. I have a little bit of that ability, most domestic cats and dogs seem to like me and I get along with squirrels and raccoons just fine. Now of course dog owners often get upset at their dogs because they aren’t barking/growling aggressively and straining at their chain to attack me. They assume there is something wrong with their dog. They won’t buy it when I explain that I do not exude any fear, they can’t smell any fear. They have no reason to go into defense attack mode. Then some owners are interested in the phenomenon, while others, which is more often than not, threaten me, for example, “How about if I grab you by the shirt and knocked you about a bit, you think you can drum up enough fear to get my dog riled up?” To which I respond, “If I have no fear of a probable vicious canine, what makes you so certain that I have fear from a human? Are you under the presumption by my appearance that I am not proficiently skilled in the martial arts which also removes the fear factor of the human equation?” The fact that their dog is still trying to lick my hand, is all it takes for them to realize that I am confident in my lack of fear. Mind you, it is not uncommon that I get called a Psychopath because they read somewhere that Psychopaths have no emotions and don’t know fear. That is not entirely true. They do have emotions and they do know fear, they simply do not show or emulate it the same way ordinary and typical folk do. They are just better at hiding it. In my case, I feel I did inherit my father’s ability to move among animals, but I have had lousy experiences with skunks, porcupines and a run in with a very upset moose who set me scurrying up a tree and stood their as a sentinel for hours. So, I’m not as proficient as my father. Yet the martial arts is true. I took up martial arts not to learn self defense or like most idiots, aggressive offense, but to learn the many practices of meditation and discipline. Now, yes, some of them are along the lines of religious Spiritualism, but it does not mean I was required to convert. That is one of the great things about Eastern cultures is when one studies under true masters, they do not push their religion in the sense that one must become a member to observe or appreciate the philosophy, but one must listen and apply what one finds applicable to one’s needs and ideals. I have been fortunate to have some of the best masters, and not one of them were Caucasians born in North America, all were native and indigenous of the country of which their martial art was developed. So Aikido, Iaido, kyusho Jitsu, Karate, and Judo masters were all Japanese. Wing Chun, Shaolin, Nanquan, Wushu, Tai Chi and many others are from Chinese masters. The term Kung Fu is simply just the Chinese term for Chinese Boxing or Chinese Martial Arts. So in the movies when you hear someone say, “Show me your Kung Fu.” they are asking to demonstrate your style of Chinese Boxing or as we refer to it as Martial Arts. To continue I learned Korean styles such as WonHwaDo and Taekwondo in Korea. Brazil has adapted a number of Japanese styles to create their own versions in both Jiu-Jitsu and Taekwondo. The Brazilian focuses more on grappling, and locks, where the Japanese is more free flowing. The other art form I learned was from Thailand called Muay Thai and it is one of the most popular used today in what they call Mixed Martial Arts, of which I am no fan. It is brutal and nothing more than a blood sport. Now the purpose for explaining all of this is because the disciplines of studying martial arts was all about finding balance and control over both conscious and subconscious thought. Meditation is an extremely valuable tool. Plus the other benefits of the martial arts is the self confidence it provides in over coming so many fears and paranoia that plague so many uncontrolled thoughts. Point being is I do not go looking for trouble nor do I tempt it. Yet I know I have the skill sets to protect my self or come to the aid of anyone in physical conflict and requires assistance. So, the two technique I tend to use is Aikido and Kyusho Jitsu both Japanese. Aikido often gets criticized as being weak in offense, but that’s the point it is not meant to be a strong offense. The technique is to use the opponent’s momentum to propel their own action and as a defender, we are merely the fulcrum. Otherwise we assist the attacker on his or her way, by a blocking pushing motion, their own momentum throws them out of control. Also Aikido is good for being in close and using a variety of joint locks. Now combine that with Kyusho Jitsu which is the art of applying certain pressure points quickly with not much more that a poke of a finger and one can temporarily paralyze an attacker. Point is cause the least amount of harm with the least amount of effort. There is no need for flying kicks, and all of that cinema Kung Fu nonsense. It is all silly and frivolous. Bruce Lee was silly and frivolous, but he also knew who and what he was, he was out to prove that martial arts belonged to everyone and not cooped up in monasteries or private schools in China, Hong Kong, and Japan. Between himself and one of his teachers, Ip Man, they revolutionized martial arts and made it an open school. The downside, is it also birthed arrogance and violence. So, I have often been asked, “What is the meaning of life?” Well, first of all, I can only deal objectively with what I know and my knowledge is that of the human mind and that of human mortality. What is beyond, I do not have the faintest idea. I have theories and of course they are based on faith. But my objective as a scientist of Psychology, science and faith, do not mix or even cross paths. As a science we work on four foundations. Logic, reason, rationale, and common sense. So when establishing fact and truth, all four of those foundations must be present and accounted for. Not three or two, all four must exist. They are necessary to secure the answers to the prime questions of what, how and why. They may also assist in when, where and who because having a timeline and key contributing historical figures to provide chronological reference to giving precedence. What is problematic is humanities difficulty in accepting fact and truth. Why? Because the mythical, the hearsay, the gossip, the fantasy is easier to swallow than the factual truth. Again why? Because once given a factual truth, it becomes an end statement. There is nothing more to be said, any argument is futile, redundant, and worthless. Thus no one wants to accept the last word of the finality of the truth. Think about it. It has been proven well beyond a doubt that the earth is round in a globular manner, yet there are all sorts of groups that are still supporting the ideal that the Earth is flat and science and technology has been lying all along. Then the clowns who insist that the 1969 Apollo lunar landing was faked in a Hollywood studio. Sorry, but 1969 Hollywood didn’t have that kind of talent. They might have pulled it off 23 or so years later when they did that Alien Autopsy that was narrated by Jonathan Frakes, you know, Commander William Riker from Star Trek: The Next Generation. It looked very impressive when it was originally aired. Still, I knew that it was not real, simply because the timing was right to pull off a stunt like that, you know with the most popular television show being X-Files. Then in 2006, some joker claimed, yes, what we saw was a staged presentation, but that he viewed the original film given to him by a retired military cameraman who wished to remain anonymous. That he had even slipped in a few frames of the original film that was not degraded into the recreation, but refused to say exactly when and where. Otherwise, conspiracy feeders. What I can assure you is what everything comes down to, as I have mentioned before and often, is that as humans, we have an extra gift that goes beyond the animal instinct of fight or flight, we were given the sentient power of free will. Free will is the distinction of the ability to make choices and/or decisions. That is our unique power. The onus is entirely on you to make your own choices, decisions and paths. It is not about good or bad, right or wrong, up or down. It is more about putting the effort of thought and examination of weighing the pros and cons before making a choice or a decision.Yet, humans are flawed and that’s what makes it all so interesting because our flaws cause us to be illogical, unreasonable, irrational and lack common sense. Too eager to jump to conclusions, assume and/or criticize.Until we learn better, we are gullible, vulnerable to suggestion, malleable, and often easy prey to con artists, swindlers, scammers, and other forms of fraud. Even things that are absolutely legal and socially acceptable such as gambling. One fact that is true, is that at the end of the day, the house always wins. Casinos do not go in the red. Yet it only took the like of the real estate magnate Donald Trump to come along and do the improbable, put three major casinos into bankruptcy, and he walked away smelling like a rose. He put thousands of people out of work and managed to profit from it. Then he flipped his allegiance to the Democratic Party to Republican Party and managed to get on the Presidential ticket and manipulated the Electoral College and won. Donald Trump is the master con artist of all time. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate the guy, in a way I sort of admire his audacity. Of course I’m not an American, and even if I was, I would not have voted for him or his party. He is without a doubt a genuine Narcissist Personality Disorder to the point of megalomania. He proves himself symptomatically each and everyday.
