What are the important life management skills which should be taught to students?

Grab your chair. This is going to be a long answer!I am dividing my answer into subheadings for easier visibility:Time Management (Getting more done in less time)I have always struggled with time management since childhood. My mother would ask me to build a proper schedule during my school days. I would love that feeling of drawing out a fresh sheet of paper and allotting time to each activity. I would then stick that in front of my study table and we all know how that story would end. Used to end up not following my routine within 2–3 days of creating it. I guess, I am not the only one to have this experience.I started questioning this habit of mine during Civil Service exam preparation days.I would just jam pack my entire 24 hours with activities. Sample time schedule would be like:8 am - Wake Up8 am - 8.30 am - Freshen up, Breakfast8.30 am - 9 am - Revise class, travelling time9 am - 12 pm - GS Coaching Class12 pm - 12.30 pm - Lunch..9 pm - 12 am - Study + GS Class revisiom12 am - 1 am - Lesiure + YouTube video surfing.I would usually fill my entire time slots and have no breathing space. We tend to over estimate what we can achieve in 24 hours and then curse ourselves for not following that schedule in a few days.Time to change our approach towards time management. Hope these 2 Laws , I am going to talk about, turn you into a productivity beast.a) Pareto’s Principle aka 80- 20 rule :Put simply, for many events, roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes. This can be applied to a lot of events in the world.Example :20% of the world’s countries account for roughly 80% of world’s GDP.20% of customers are responsible for 80% of sales. So, for students, 20% of output can help you get of 80% marks. You can apply the same principle for competitive exams.20 % of effort :Reading and memorising the syllabus.Reading and understanding the previous year questionsPracticing last 5 years questionPractice - answer writingRevisionYou don’t have to aim for perfection. Aim for the 20% to get 80% output.b) Parkinson’s Law:“Work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion. ”We all have faced this:An assignment is scheduled for submission on : 5th September - 10 am.We all start working on night of 4th September. In short, the more time you allot to a task, the more time it will consume.Tip : If you are a profession procrastinator like me, try setting a timer on your phone and work on a task. It will help you be complete your task in quickest time possible. The goal is to be effective and not efficient.Have started applying these principles in practice and I can’t tell how much I enjoy freeing up my time.Do try and let me know, how useful were they for you in the comments. We can exchange experience and some notes too ! :D2. Networking (Social Skills) :I used to be an introvert person but soon realised till and till you open up and express how and what you feel, believe and think about, people tend to misunderstand you. It’s good to open up and exchange ideas with fellow students. You can learn how to perform better in a particular subject or may be get tips on how to do well in theatre.Instead of wondering how other friends do so well in an extra curricular, try and talk to them. Ask them questions, network, learn, grow and expand your horizon. Opening up and talking to new people not only gives you a fresh perspective on a variety of subjects but also makes you respect others opinions and point of view. You can also engage with content creators on various social media platforms. They say this for a reason - “ Your network is your net worth! “3. Creative Thinking :I remember reading an answer by James Altucher wherein he practices his creativity muscle by brainstorming and writing down 10 ideas to problem statements on a waiter’s notepad. Creativity like Will power is like a muscle. The more you work on it, the better it gets. People aren’t born creative. They can be moulded into one, with practice. You can also start reading fiction books to expand your creative thinking. Please don’t equate day dreaming to creative thinking.4. Communication (Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening) :This story is from 2016. 7th semester and my entire batch was appearing for pre-placement offers. Tech Mahindra had come to our campus for recruitment. We were supposed to write an essay and attempt question on basic English grammar in the 1st round. This was supposed to act as a screening round.Around 180 students had appeared and only 36 had made it to the next round!Event the batch topper had failed to make it to the next round. The reason : lack of communication skills. If I had to mention one skill which would improve your chances of promotion or recruitment, that would be communication skills. That includes all three - Writing, Speaking and listening.Think about this - You can only communicate about what you feel and think by either speaking or writing and you can only understand what the other Homo sapien wants to say by either reading or listening. So don’t you think it is necessary that we students/ humans pay the most attention to this life management skill !Read books on communication to improve and work on these skills.5. Self-Motivation : (How to deal with failure)It is funny how success is celebrate and failure is brushed away. It’s rightly said - Success has many father, but failure is an orphan.Edison made 1,000 unsuccessful attempts to invent the light bulb. Had not been able to deal failure, we might have to still study under sunlight or candles only.Point is, a student should learn the art of dealing with failure and start working in the right direction. You can also read my experience of dealing with failure.I used to screenshot motivational quotes and inspirational stories. I would have approximately 100’s of them. A couple of months down the line, I soon lost vigour. I would not reap the outputs I would dream of. Simple reason : I WASN’T taking action. Thoughts without action is like a car with NO petrol.External motivation is temporary, inner motivation + taking action in right direction is the key!6. Wellness : (Physical, Mental and Digital Wellness)a) Physical Well Being :Both mind and body are inter-related. So to attain better performance , students should focus on basic workouts.Ex : 100 - 200 skips per day, Brisk Walking for 30 minutes, climbing the stairs of your apartment.b) Mental Well Being :Humans have monkey brain. Our thoughts jump from one end to another like a monkey. To trap it, I tried to a method - “ Journaling”.Before you begin your day, simply vomit whatever comes to your mind. Just blurt out any feeling, thought, random joke or pending tasks on a sheet of paper. Now, begin analysing which are thoughts which were of no value and were simply bothering you.You can trap these thoughts on a diary and begin your day after zeroing down on the most important task for the day. This task helped me perform better as a student and helped me crack multiple government exams.Sample Journal (aka, brain vomit ) :Image Source: My diaryStudents can also track your time using their journal.“What gets measured, get’s managed”As a 30 day experiment, I am currently tracking every hour of my life using my diary. Trying to analyse where my time goes and how can I become productive and enjoy more.c) Digital Well Being :We are literally bombarded with hundreds of irrelevant notification throughout the day. I receive more than 150 notification from Whatsapp alone in a day. In this attention economy, all companies want is to grab your attention. This is the new currency. There is going to be an exponential rise in digital devices and we need to spread literacy about digital wellness.Magazine copywriters are tasked with writing advertisement headlines (copywriting) which grab attention of the reader within 5 seconds.Example:Image Source: Google Search EngineNotice how each headline is screaming to grab your attention. It makes you feel left out if you don’t read the magazine. This is an art. There is science behind this art.So our job as a student is to save our will power and attention.I personally have decreased the number of notifications I receive on my mobile drastically.Emails from brands and other shopping websites have been unsubscribed to. Now I choose when I want to buy or browse through their collection. Not only does it save my time and energy, it saves me money by avoiding unnecessary shopping. Win - Win.Notifications from Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Pinterest and Zomato - all have been shut. I get to choose when I open them. Not otherwise. You can also shut down notification sounds each time your phone receives a message.Students who are preparing for competitive exams can also try using basic phone which have no camera to decrease time wastage. I have tried this for 2 years, and I feel I haven’t missed out on much.Alternatively, you can keep your phone away in the next room. This helps you to avoid checking your phone every 5 minutes. You should be in control of your phone and not otherwise.(Yes I know, I’m a digital monk :D )Spend sometime in nature. It helps :)7. Give Back :Think about this. As a student, we study so many books, principles, theories, laws and theorems. There has been a lot of man hours gone behind producing these content. So many humans have dedicated and spent hours of their life t o simplify and ease our lives.Students should take the responsibility of expressing their gratitude and carry forward and help provide value to other students/ humans. You can give back with simple action (good karmic actions).Ex: Maybe by developing an app which helps farmer reap better crops or as simple as explaining something which you feel you know and have experienced best.Give back to the society and make the world a better place to live! You owe it.The metaphor : “ We are sitting on The shoulder-of-giants” aptly fits here” (Worth Googling it) .Hope this comprehensive answer helps students and anyone and everyone who needs this.Do share and upvote if you find this answer to be useful :)

Do ghosts really exist?

**Caution: What I am going to say, might be disturbing to some readers.I am a Bengali living in Mumbai. My parents hail from Kolkata, W.B. India. Since my childhood, we were told this story about my great grandfather, who was a Tantrik in Bangladesh (Where my ancestors lived before Partition in 1947). My great-grandfather was a renowned tantrik who belonged to an upper class household of Zamindars in Sylhet, BD. During partition, half of his family wished to stay there in Bangladesh and other half decided to come to India. The ordeal that they had to face during the migration was horrific. Some of the family members got robbed, while some died while trying to cross over to India. While they all walked their way through, there was something my great grandfather didn’t let anyone touch. A Book. He carried it himself and never let go of it even when they met hostile people on the road who almost took everything from them including food, money, jewellery etc. After they crossed over, in next few years the family was split in few groups. Some settled in Assam, some in Bihar, and my grandfather eventually settled in Kolkata, after sometime when he got a job in railways, my family moved to Kathgodam (near Nainital Uttarakhand). My great grandfather died in the late 60s’ while he was staying with my grandfather that time in Kolkata. In my childhood I was told that the book he carried was haunted. It was used by my great-grandfather to open some kind of portal to the other dimension. The book was infamous for many reasons. My father and uncles remember my granny specifically describing how the book would move by itself, consume food, redress itself in different cloths etc. She even mentioned an infamous page 117, and a mantra (written in Bengali) that would summon spirits. Since 2003, I spent probably more than 12 years trying to find the book. All those years, I tried to help my father/uncles to revive their memory about the book, anything that can help me find it.And as they say, if you truly keep trying and putting an effort into something, you will eventually find it, and so did I. It was the year 2015 when I was visiting our ancestral house in Kolkata. Nobody lived there and the house was very old. From time to time my father was travelling there to get it cleaned. Once my father got older, the job came on my shoulders. Unlike my father, I never stayed in the house during night. Not because I was scared or something, but because of this weird foul smell, that even after my constant efforts, I couldn’t get rid of. During that visit in September 2015, I found out a Big trunk full of shitload of old artifacts. Some of the things included:1: Bronze kitchen utensils (few spoons, a plate, a pan and a spatula).2: Five jars full of old coins.3: A glass jar full of brown color liquid (I don not know what it was, but when I drained the liquid I saw what seemed to be a dozen of human teeth).4: White beads scattered all over the bottom of the trunk.5: A medium sized mirror.6: A very old painting of a lone tree in a field.7: A small aluminum box (and inside it there was a book wrapped in a black silk cloth)As it was already 6PM and the sun sets in Kolkata at around 5:30, it became a bit spooky once I realized that the brown jar had human teeth in it (once I drained the brown liquid). Also I didnt want to contemplate on my potential discovery of that infamous book. So I decided to call it a day without even unwrapping the book. I went back to my relative’s place. I had trouble sleeping that night, and I did not eat much in the dinner. I kept on contemplating that how come nobody in my family knew about the trunk even after all these years. Anyway, I woke up next morning and rushed to the spot without having breakfast (I usually do skip breakfast).I went up to that room on the first floor. I saw the trunk right there. I opened it and to my utter shock and surprise, I see that things inside it are arranged almost exactly how I saw it the day before. I remember that I observed the things inside and kept them back in no certain order, I even took out the book (wrapped in black cloth) from that aluminum box and didnt put it back inside the box. And lastly, I clearly remember that I drained that brown liquid in the jar, after that I saw roughly 11 human teeth in it. Instead, this is what I see now:1: Bronze kitchen utensils-1spoon, a plate, and a spatula. The bronze pan was missing.2: Same 5 Jars full of old coins.3: Glass Jar FULL of same brown color liquid. Now the lid was tightened with a black cloth. I struggled to open it. And when I did, I drained the liquid again. To my utter shock, I found no teeth but nearly 15-20 white beads that were previously scattered on the bottom of the trunk.4: Not a single white bead on the bottom of the trunk!!5: Same medium sized mirror.6: Same old painting of a lone tree in a field.7: Same aluminum box but THE BOOK WAS MISSING!After going through this terrifying sight, I couldn’t stay put in the room, as it was a bit dark even during daytime. I carried the trunk and brought it downstairs somehow and put it just near the main entrance of the house (so that there is enough sunlight and enough way out for me to escape if something else was on its way to shock me :D ). After carefully observing everything, I realized that most likely the cloth used to tighten the lid of that brown liquid jar, was the same cloth that was wrapped around the book the day before. I could clearly see the lines that would form in it if it was used to wrap a book. For next 30 minutes, I frantically kept trying to search the book. Even went upstairs in the same room twice, but couldn’t find it. I was disheartened, shocked and terrified at the same time. I eventually gave up. I arranged all things the way I found them. I closed the trunk and carried it back to the same room in the first floor. I checked the house trying to figure out if somebody had barged in. But there were no visible signs. I locked the doors and came back to my relative’s place. After few days I was back in Mumbai. I kept thinking about the whole episode. Soon I developed this strong doubt that may be it was just something my mind made up out of fear. Or maybe I didn’t observe the trunk properly at first. Maybe everything in it was actually intact and maybe I dropped the book somewhere in that room and couldn’t find it because there wasn’t enough light. Soon the inquisitive me started pushing me to visit the place again.I didn’t return to the house until August 2016, after the neighbors reported that a wall had collapsed on the back side. After examining the damage, I went back to the same room, opened the door and saw the trunk. The moment I opened it, the same foul smell (only 10 times stronger) exploded out of the trunk. The smell was so strong that I was pushed back few steps. I had no clue what happened. I saw the brown liquid jar was broken and the torn pages of the same book (soaked in that brown liquid) was scattered everywhere. The painting was nowhere to be seen. Everything else was nearly intact including the mirror. Also the black cloth lay there, neither attached with the book, nor with the glass jar. The bronze pan and the missing spoons did not come back. Shockingly I could see the human teeth inside the broken glass jar again and a BIG BADASS old lock that was NOT THERE BEFORE. The lock was very heavy (probably 2kg) so I'm sure I could not have missed to spot it before. The pages of the book were all torn/damaged and I could hardly read anything written on it. The increasingly terrible smell and the bone-chilling reminder of what I experienced a year ago, combined with what I just saw left me petrified. I left as soon as I could (almost fell from the stairs trying to run). That day I ended my pursuit. We sold the house in the early 2017. The person who bought it (a builder) asked us if we want to take back the stuffs that are kept in there. I told him NO THANKS. I visited the place on March 2018, just to see that the guy has razed the entire house to the ground, while all other buildings in the surrounding stood still. I had mixed feelings as I traveled back to my relative’s place. After few days I came back to Mumbai and moved on with my life. I leave it to you if you think this answers the question. Probably If my house was still there, I would have invited you to try your luck to experience some paranormal activities in that room if not ghosts.PS: Months after my last visit to the spot, I had this terrifying dream, where I saw myself walking down the street that goes straight towards my old house. Soon I started realizing that all houses in my neighbourhood are bulldozed and razed to the ground, except for one... my old house! Gazing through my soul in utter silence.PC: Flickr the image isn't of my house but used for the purpose of illustration.Edit:Thanks for the overwhelming response. I am glad that so many questions poured in. I will try to answer some of the open ended questions below.Q: How do you know that It was indeed the same book when you didn’t even unwrap it?A: I don’t. The book, as per my granny, was known as “Chhoto Boi”, meaning small book in Bengali. The book that I found was roughly 4″X 3″ inches in length and breadth. My dad doesn’t remember the existence of the trunk until I asked him after my first encounter with it. Given the other contents in the trunk, I know that the lock, the coins and the mirror were at least 100 years old. As per me, there is a VERY high probability that it was the same book. It would perhaps remain an unanswered question If you demand 100% certainty.Q: Why nobody else spotted the trunk?A: That room was used as a warehouse to store a lot of things so I guess the trunk can easily be there hidden in plain sight and nobody would know. I and my dad both hired workers at times to wash/clean the house and we specifically locked the warehouse as to avoid any scope of theft. So It was usually us who ended up cleaning the warehouse.Q: Why didn’t you bring some of the stuff to examine it properly?A: After the first time incident, I was a bit scared as it was too dark and I just discovered a bunch of human teeth. Also, I gave a few second thought about my relative (the aunt of my father) who was already very old... I basically didn’t want to bring something to their house that might harm them in anyway (disclaimer: I have huge doubts in dark/paranormal energy and bla bla, but I would not practice my bravery at the cost of somebody else). After the second incident I was disheartened to lose the book. So It didn’t occur to me that taking some of the other things back with me would make sense.Q: What about the brown color liquid?A: I have no idea. I drained the liquid which seemed like a bit oily in nature and didn’t have ANY odour at first two occasions. I know very well that everything leaks (I love thermodynamics :D) and any liquid would either evaporate or be absorbed. If this had stayed for so long in that jar, then It can only be some variant of oil. By the way, on my last visit when I saw it broken. The liquid seemed to have evaporated. The torn pages of the book were soaked into it and turned completely brown. The liquid left a clear mark on the trunk, so I know this for sure.Q: How will you conclude/describe the events that took place in the house?A: I am agnostic. My whole life rests on a conviction that the universe IS PERFECT and so do all the laws of physics. The laws are so absolutely flawless that they ensure the tiniest of particles and the most super-massive blackholes keep functioning. So if someone comes and says to me that an unknown entity is capable of bending the same laws, I would shout out ‘Foxtrot Oscar’ loudly on his face. What spooked the hell out of me, was the unknown. Something I didn’t have any explanation. But you know no matter how brave and logical I sound, during those moments in the house, I was gripped in fear. I will not lie... even to this day I try to digest how I behaved, despite the conviction I have against such things. Unfortunately I will never get the opportunity back to go there and examine the things again. I chickened out when I had the opportunity. This would remain probably the greatest regret of my life.Edit#2 (Dated: 1st June 2020)In few weeks, I will be starting my conquest to trace the trunk. I know it is probably too late after almost 3 years. But after getting in touch with the builder somehow, now I know where he sold all the stuff. So I am waiting for my next trip to Kolkata which is a week away. Now I will be more frequent in my visits as my employer has allowed me to work from both Kolkata and Mumbai (Thanks and NoThanks to Corona). Hope the lockdown ends soon, and even though the hope is very thin, but I will try my best to trace the trunk and the things that were in it.
