You should make your decision depending on what factors are most important to you.Major : If you’re majoring in engineering, you may lean more towards HKUST since they have a slightly richer course catalogue and are more known for their research facilities. Job prospects post graduating from HKU/HKUST are pretty much the same though.Cross-faculty education : If you’re interested in studying beyond the boundaries of your major (say if you’re a computer science major who also has an interest in philosophy or literature), you should definitely head to HKU.Scholarship : HKU is far more generous with scholarships than HKUST and you’re very likely to get a hefty scholarship at HKU if your high school/SAT scores are above the 95% mark.Lifestyle : HKU is bang in the centre of Hong Kong. Everything is a maximum of 15 minutes from you since HKU has it’s own MTR station. HKUST is really far away from Central and it can be a real pain to travel to and from the campus. At the same time, HKUST’s campus is right on the water and has some really incredible views since they pretty much have their own beach. Depending on what setting you prefer, you could make a decision.Student residences: From what I’ve gathered, they are pretty similar so I don’t think this would really make a difference to your decision.Since I’m graduating from HKU, I may be slightly biased, so it’s best to do more research.

I studied in Tsinghua for 6 years for undergraduate and graduate programs. I got my BE there and later quit the graduate program. I got some friends in PKU.If the person in concern is a typical Chinese high school student, I would recommend THU if he/she is interested in Engineer or PKU if he's studying social science. For sciences there is no real difference.However, Tsinghua has shown me that how to train the world's most brilliant brains to be stupid. Students there have no idea about what's really happening in the world. Most of them do not understand basic of basics in economics, sociology or psychology. Worse, many of them regard Marxism as the only truth. It is not uncommon to see someone bragging that has finished Das Kapital and learned the real Marxism from it. They haven't even read a single modern sociology or philosophy text book!I can't say exact same thing happens in PKU but from my chats with my friends from PKU I don't think it will be much better.HKU for sure doesn't have that many talented students and I would say it is very important for undergraduate students in science or engineering majors to have peer pressure. No offense but we should admit that T and P got pretty smart students. Arts or social science really needs free of censorship so HKU is the choice if the student is not heavily brainwashed - nowadays brainwash in China is not necessarily to make you a zealot, but just to give you wrong or incomplete information, make you blind and cynical. Many of them from mainland cannot understand or bear freedom. They feel uncomfortable exposed in a free environment and will stick to small circles within mainlanders. That might be worse than staying in mainland for them - at least they got mama and daddy and lame brainwashed classmates.So it just depends on what aspects the person cares. Nothing but papers and formulas? T or P. Wanna be with the commies and one day become a corrupted mayor? Go to T. Need more freedom and become a normal human? HKU.
