Picture it. The South. 1980. Company had stated blatantly that they were looking to hire women because they needed token female employees, and fast. VP who interviewed me said, “I’ll hire you if you promise me that, for the next 5 years, you won’t get married, get pregnant, or go back to school for an advanced degree”.Yes, they could ask questions like that back then. And we couldn’t object. I said, “sure!” and took the job.Want more?I was a steel trader. I’m tri-lingual. I was handling customers in other countries so they didn’t have to depend on, or pay, professional interpreters who weren’t employees.In the entire company, there were only 3 women who were traders.My department consisted of me & 2 men. We had a secretary. She’d been hired right after she’d had her 4th child. Over the months, she was proudly losing the weight she’d put on when she was pregnant. One morning, I noticed that…she looked pregnant again. I wasn’t going to say anything, because I wasn’t an idiot - I know you never ask a woman if she’s pregnant until or unless you see the baby crowning yourself.But one morning, about a week later, she was late to work. Now, this company had a room full of temp secretaries just a few steps down the hall from my desk. But this VP needed a letter typed and came careening out of his office, right past my 2 male co-workers, made a beeline straight for me, and said, “do you know how to TYPE????!!!!” He never thought to ask either of them if they knew how to type,(FYI, I type like the wind - and that was back when there were electric typewriters which purposely slowed us down, not like today’s laptops that have no depression or pushback. And I STILL could type like the wind.)But I didn’t want HIM to know that. So I replied, “um…yeah…I…guess, a little?” and he said, “GREAT! Type up this letter right NOW!” So I went to the secretary’s desk, and took my sweet time finding the letterhead. Then I took three tries to roll it into the carriage straight. Then I started typing and went, “Whoops! You want copies, right?” and he said, “right”. So I threw out that piece of paper, dug around in the desk to find 2 sheets of carbon paper, layered the 2 sheets of carbon paper with 3 sheets of letterhead, and made another 3 tries of rolling the papers all together - and straight - into the carriage.Then I started typing. Slowly. Like pretending to hunt and peck. Started out with “Dear Mr.” and went, “oh! Sorry! I was supposed to type today’s date first, right?” and he was grimacing and tapping his foot.So I again got 3 new sheets of letterhead and alternated them with the 2 sheets of carbon paper, and took 3 tries to get it into the carriage straight. Then I typed the date, and, 2 lines lower, typed “dear Mr.” and went, “Oops! I made a typo!” and threw out the 3 pages of letterhead and started shuffling 3 more new sheets of letterhead with the 2 sheets of carbon paper, and….he exploded.“GIVE ME THAT LETTER!”, he shouted. “Jesus, I’ll just take it to the Secretarial Pool!”(YEAH, ya will, you macho chauvinistic creep, I thought to myself.)Meanwhile, when our secretary got there, she looked like she’d been crying. I took her arm and we walked to another floor and sat in that company’s break room, so she could tell me what happened.She WAS pregnant again. Her 5th child in 6 years. She was Catholic, and abortion was not something she would do. But, at her OB/GYN appointment, to which her husband accompanied her, she told her (male) doctor that, when this child was born, she wanted her tubes tied immediately.Her male doctor and her male husband then talked about this in front of her as though she weren’t even there, and her male husband said “Catholics don’t do that” and her male doctor said, “they sure don’t, especially not in this convent-run hospital”.So she stood up and told them, “This is the last child I”m having. I will have this baby in another hospital, in order to get my tubes tied immediately after it’s born. I will get another OB MD to deliver my baby. And I will get another husband if that’s necessary, too.”Then she walked out of the convent-run hospital, called a cab, and came straight to work.Yes, I know you’ve gone back to the top of this reply to check the date. That’s right - all this happened in 1980 - not 1880.It was a man’s world, baby. I am an American in the pharmaceutical business. I am going to provide a broader perspective in my response to this question. Here is my recommendation based on experience:If you are a foreign national taking any opioid or other controlled medication, and you are planning to visit the US:You are advised to have a letter typed on official office letterhead from your physician stating the controlled drugs you are taking are by his authorized prescription. It should be hand signed by the doctor, state the disorder, medication, dosage, strength, and quantity dispensed along with the refill date. It should also have an emergency contact phone number for the physicians office. The letter should also state the doctors medical practitioner license number as well as jurisdiction of license, for example: licensed to practice in the United Kingdom.. etc.You should fill your travel prescription the day before you leave home so your actual pill count at the border crossing corresponds with the number of days you plan to be in the US.Do not being any more than a few extra emergency tablets in case your departure is delayed by a storm or unforseen events. Although US customs may or may not scrutinize you and make your day sad, they CAN so it is best to have everything in perfect order.If you take medications, it would be advisable to check to see if any of them are considered controlled or prohibited by US drug laws. For example, medical Marijuana might be legal and prescribed in your home country, but Marijuana laws vary by state, and US federal drug law prohibits it. Attempting to bring in a stash from Marrakesh under any circumstance is not going to produce a favorable outcome at a US Customs and Inspection desk.Also, make and keep a photocopy copy of the original prescription with the doctor's letter. This verifies the prescription drug, strength and count corresponds to the order issued by the doctor. No more, no less.Put the controlled medicine pill bottles in a special zip lock bag, separate from your other medications, and keep it in a secure carry-on bag. Monitor it carefully, and if possible get a little mini-lock to prevent tampering or theft, and to keep others from stashing prohibited things in your bag surruptiously.Keep your medication documentation in a separate zip lock bag, and put it in a very safe place with your passport.When you arrive at US customs and you are asked to speak, affirmatively volunteer that you have prescription medications along with your doctors authorization documents. This helps the agent and since you are fully prepared, he can do his job quickly and efficiently, and shows you have nothing to hide. This is much better than having him find suspicious pills in the bottom of your bag. He still may count your pills, and investigate further, it's at his discretion. At least you have done everything you can to be transparent.If you have a chronic disorder such as severe pain that requires ongoing controlled medication, it is a good idea for you to visit your home doctor several weeks before travel to make all the basic arrangements noted above.While you are there, it would be a good idea for you to ask your doctors office to identify a physician contact in the area you plan to visit in the US. This is in case you have an emergency medical need, or you lose your prescription, or it is confiscated by US customs for some reason. The two physicians can collaborate to provide the best care to you in case of an emergency.Remember that in the US, doctors are licensed by the states, not the federal government. For example, doctors not specifically licensed by the state of Florida cannot provide care or write prescriptions in this state. It is a crime if they do. Florida Pharmacies do not generally accept prescriptions from out of state doctors, let alone foreign ones.The US medical system is “fee for service,” so it is highly recommended that you obtain short term US valid medical insurance for the duration of your stay. Be advised non US insurers may or may not provide cover for vacation stays in the US. You should check with your regular health insurance provider to verify what trav coverage you have before leaving, and you may wish to purchase separate cover for emergency air ambulance transport back to your home country as well. “Verify before you fly.“If you find yourself in an urgent or emergent situation in the US, dial 911 on any working phone, or go to the nearest hospital emergency center. They are required to render emergency care without regard to cost or ability to pay, or nationality. That said, any required course of treatment is very limited and does not include post discharge prescription medications which can be very costly. Non-US citizens and international travelers are permitted to use its program in the US and Puerto Rico: www.hpprx.comCertain drugs that may be over the counter in foreign countries may be restricted to prescription only in the US, so be sure to travel with a sufficient and well documented supply, but not so much as to raise suspicions.Be mindful of airline restrictions on compressed gas inhalers, fluids, gells, lotions, and tubed creams. It is better to have two or three small bottles of liquid than one large one. I once saw a sweet little old white haired lady humiliated in a very crowded airport by a TSA inspector who held up and waved a fairly large bottle of feminine hygiene medication she had in her purse. The agent shouted at her, and called a supervisor who then pulled we out of line and subjected her to a demeaning search. While this is not the standard, it can happen, so check with the airlines to see what container limits they have.Finally, keep all your responses short and truthful. Have your papers and medications ready, ask if he would like to see them, if not move on. If so, comply courteously and respond to questions clearly.
