Just from an outsider's perspective the B2C online language learning business is a tough business to be in, not showing any hockey stick-effects within the first years. That's why the initial hype is gone and the strategy behind the scenes has change drastically. Here's why:'No pay'-mentality of the average consumer. Although the online platforms like Livemocha, Babbel, Busuu by now have a really good offering most users think that they can still get a free online deal somewhere else.No virality. Part of the initial idea of the web 2.0 language learning community was that platform would grow by itself through users inviting other users (such as Facebook) and therefore marketing spendings would be very low. However, language learning is a very individual task which you typically do not share with your friends. That means that marketing spendings to attract a new user are actually quite high (see next bullet point).Tough competition: Rosetta Stone still sells CDs but for the normal consumer are considered an option of how to learn languages as well. All online language learning platforms cannot compete with their marketing spendings per consumer. Just a quick calculation: Rosetta Stone's Level 1-3 course costs $399, the Livemocha/Collins Active Course costs $149 (1 year subscription), the Busuu Premium membership roughly $100 (1 year subscription) and the Babbel Premium membership $89.40 (1 year subscription). So Rosetta Stone is able to spend more marketing dollars than the revenue potential of every single online competitor. According to Michael Schutzler (see Which are the key competitors to Livemocha?) Rosetta Stone makes 10x the revenue of Babbel and is barely breaking even. How can an online competitor compete against that?Missing stickiness.
