PDF Editor FAQ

I am a new photographer and have a few shots with people who are not models but are semi-famous in their own circles. Do I need a release form for them to sign? Or do I compensate them later on if I use it for any commercial purposes?

Most of the time you need to pay people if you want to use their photo for commercial purpose. But you can do it when you have the opportunity to sell the photo, though they might say no. When you can, it is great to get a release when you do the shots. But a lot of people will NOT sign them or you will be forced to offer them compensation for a shot you may never sell. That cuts into your profits. Sometimes, it is best to just wait for an opportunity to sell it and then ask the person. There are several pitfalls with this as it may be years later and you don't know how to contact them, or they simply have moved on in life and no longer want their photos to be seen. What designates a commercial purpose? Specifically, if you want to make prints and sell their image, place the image in magazines, stock photography and especially advertising of any kind. Basically, all people (not just celebrities) have publicity rights where their image is their own for commercial purposes. It doesn't usually matter whether that photo was taken in public or private, but instead depends on how the photo is displayed. In most cases, people have NO publicity rights when a photo is news worthy. That is why when CBS news is filming on the street, they don't need to stop passersby or get a model release from them. It is also why you can film or photograph a suspected criminal who covers their face. They obviously would not sign a release form. News can be a broad subject, and most paparazzi photos of celebrities fall under this category and can be used in "news" magazines because there is a general public interest in their lives.Publishing a normal persons photo in a magazine requires a model release or the person's okay unless it is a news story. Some commenters have that wrong here. My photos have been published in a couple hundred fashion and general interest magazines, and while the magazines do not always require a physical release, they want to know that the subject is okay with being published so they do not get sued.Even all those National Geographic photos of poor people in far away places require a release now. I spoke to a prominent photographer for them who has to get a release from every single subject that appears. Usually they pay the subjects after the image is taken. There are attorneys in each country that specialize in combing through various publications and double check a release was gotten.I do want to elaborate on people who do NOT want to sign releases. A lot of commenters assume you can automatically get people to sign model releases. That is absolutely NOT the case. Many normal people will of course sign as they think this is standard procedure. But if you are working with models, actors, business people, etc., they usually won't sign. As a New York fashion photographer, if I presented a model on my shoots with a blanket standard release form, I would get a nightmare phone call from the modeling agency ripping me a new one. I would probably get a letter from their attorney and a strong attempt to end my career. Releases are something negotiated and you pay for specific usage. If you are famous and have a lot of clout, then it is a bit easier to get them from everyone. All that said, there are a lot of uses that you generally do NOT need a release for, like your own website, portfolio, social media, your blog, your own flyer, post card, or business card. you can do a lot with out a release.Laws vary in different countries and jurisdictions. I am not a lawyer, so please double check my info before doing something that might get you sued!

What should everyone know about CAB and NRC?

You must have come across dozens of opinions and informative pieces about the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 and the National Register of Citizens of India, affectionately known as CAB and NRC.I am just here to tell about three super important things, that you must know:If CAB and NRC prove to be disasters like Demonetization, this time, the supporters can dump all the blame on - The Elephants of India. This government blamed Nehru for failing to integrate Kashmir with the rest of India - now the supporters of Nehru can blame this government for doing exactly the same with the North Eastern states of India with the Inner Line Permits. At the end of the day, all of this friction is happening just to grab political power in the state of West Bengal. In case all this sounds confusing, here’s presenting the short and quick story of CAB and NRC, as it happened.Blame the ElephantsAbout 150 years ago from now.Just 7 years after Petroleum was first struck in Pennsylvania, USA,and a full 73 years before oil was finally stuck in Saudi Arabia, British Railway Engineer Willie Leova Lake[1] , who was helping build the 100 Km long railway line from Dibrugarh to Margherita in Assam, came across a familiar smell. The year was 1866–67.[2] [3]These were the heady times when no one in India had even seen an electric bulb and Steam Engines were considered cutting edge in technology. As you may imagine, during these times, most of the heavy lifting in large scale constructions was done with the help of Elephants.Dig Boy Dig!Engineer Willie Leova Lake, during one of his inspection rounds, noticed a very familiar smell emanating from the feet of the Elephants working on the site.It smelled like kerosene - a recently introduced lamp oil alternative, popular among the fashionable houses of Britain.Everyone else in the western world used the slightly cheaper Sperm oil, extracted from Whales to light their oil lamps at night.Willie Leova Lake saheb applied for and got instant permission to investigate the source of this smell and found an oil well in his very first attempt at digging.[4]Since he was often heard ordering his workers to - Dig Boy, Dig! at the oil well site - the place where oil was first struck in Assam, was named Digboi.[5]Today the Digboi Oil wells are managed by the Indian Oil Corporation/Oil India Limited, and has the distinction of being the oldest still operational Oil Field in the world. An oil boom and the advent of Bengali Aliens. Why the heck am I telling you the story of Elephants and Oil wells in the middle of a serious discussion about CAB and NRC?Well, this new oil discovery in a difficult to reach area in Assam - resulted in an unprecedented economic boom for the area.Suddenly, there was an urgent need to set up new railway lines, roads, refinery and allied infrastructure. New Houses had to be built, new markets had to be opened. Suddenly, there were higher paying jobs for the skilled and the unskilled and the local population couldn’t serve all the demand at once. This created a demand for more people, more hands - which in turn resulted in one of the first major waves of migration of outsiders (Much bigger than the lot that entered Assam after the signing of the Treaty of Yandabo in 1826, which also resulted in the present day Rohingya crisis in Rakhine, Myanmar) into Assam.[6]Most of these outsiders were Bengali speaking landless peasants. For them, the limitless free hold lands of Assam was a dream come true. They came in droves and brought their friends and family along.[7] [8]From AASU to ULFA to PowerThese Bengali speaking outsiders created their own Ghettos and communes, where they spoke their own language and enjoyed their own culture, alien to the locals of Assam. As their numbers grew, they also started capturing political power.Initially, the Assamese didn’t mind this immigration, but sooner, the population boom crept up to level with the resources of Assam. That’s the point in history, which started the friction and Anti-Bengali sentiments within the local population, which took the form of Protests lead by All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and even transmuted into the armed struggle against the Union of India by the United Liberation Front of Assam or ULFA.While there were many subsequent waves of immigrant migrations into Assam, owing to Cyclones, Droughts, Floods, Persecution, Socioeconomic strife, War and even plain opportunity - This Oil Boom at Digboi, about 150 years ago, was a major starting point for the current CAB and NRC issue in India. There’s so much more to this story, but for now, just understand that India in general and Assam in particular, paid a very heavy price for this entropy. Generally speaking, the student leaders of AASU then, are the elected leaders and Ministers of Assam today. The Militant leaders of ULFA then are the real estate tycoons and business magnets of Guwahati today - everything else remains the same. The Origin of NRC in Assam and why it disappointed everyone. The Agitators in Assam demanded that the Bengali Speaking aliens should be identified and deported out of the state.[9]The government agreed in principle to their demand - which was formally signed into the Assam Accord in 1985. This is the point in history, when the government decided to hold its first NRC or National Registry of Citizens of India, in the state of Assam.[10]The initial cut-off date kept to identify the Aliens in the state was 1 January 1966. That’s exactly 100 years from the year when oil was first drilled in Assam. This basically meant - every outsider, who came to Assam before 1966 was all okay!!!Later, this cut-off date was shifted to 24 March 1971 (midnight). After a lot of deliberations, numerous litigation and procedural delays, the NRC process was finally started with a pilot in 2 districts of Assam in the year 2010. This pilot project had to be aborted midway, thanks to violence, protests and deaths. The process however was re-started in 2013, under the direction of the Supreme Court of India. The result of this extensive statewide exercise was released on 31 August 2019. This exercise identified 19,06,657 people living in Assam as outsiders in primary findings. The final findings of this long, and painful INR 1600 crore exercise of NRC in Assam, were disappointing for almost everyone, who supported it.The number of Aliens identified as foreigners was much lower than expected in the popular imagination. An overwhelming majority of those identified as Aliens by NRC in Assam were Hindus.Neither did this help identify a majority of Bengali speaking people living in Assam as outsiders, nor did this exercise really cornered the majority of bengali speaking muslims. This was a major embarrassment and a complete lose-lose for all the supporters of this exercise.[11]And if that wasn’t enough, the NRC process identified Indian War Heroes, Elected Representatives and many respected civilians as aliens, complicating the verdict further. There were reports of document forgery and other procedural lapses which gave a bitter taste to everyone concerned.[12] [13]This bumpy road ultimately leads to Writers’ Building Kolkata.Where most saw a defeat of all purposes, a few special ones saw an opportunity. Thus was brought in the Citizen Amendment Bill 2019, an old tool, with a renewed purpose, primarily to ensure that all the Hindus identified as Aliens by the process of NRC in Assam, get Indian Citizenship. Now you know the actual reason why CAB welcomes Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis, Sikhs, Christians into the Indian fold but does not mention the Muslims. The next move on this political chess board is the ‘promise’ of holding a nationwide NRC. Please do not get excited, it won’t be executed in real - it is just a long carrot to stir the political pot in West Bengal.[14]It does not matterThere are large scale state wide protests against CAB in almost all north eastern states of India - but that does not matter. There is a high chance that these laws will be challenged in the courts and will most probably be overturned by the judiciary for being unconstitutional - but that does not matter. The hard earned image of India as an island of democracy and secularism is getting slammed by under-read, under informed and over zealous opinion makers around the world - but that does not matter. There is a real danger of the resuscitation of the old violent days of extremism and violence in the North East - but that does not matter. There is also a fear that the new policy of Inner Line Permits for entering North Eastern states will end up isolating the economies of north-eastern states, alienating the locals away from the Indian mainstream - but that does not matter. All that matters is the Chief Ministership of Bengal.Listen Up!While you will find a few, who will paint this as a proof of Muslims becoming second class citizens in India. While you will find a few, who will argue on the WWHG lines - Where will a Hindu go?There will be some who will demand clarity about the Christians in Bhutan and the Tamil Hindus of Sri Lanka. Some will compare this to the actions of Jinnah and a proof of the Two Nations Theory. No one will tell you though, that this is another episode of cheap short term politics played out in open, merely to gain power - something which will have long term implications on the social fabric of India in General and the Eastern states of India in particular. At this point, it is even more important for everyone concerned to read and think beyond their own tribes, states and petty political points to score. It is important to see through this facade and vote.Hope this helps.Thank you for reading.Cheers and peace.Footnotes[1] Message Boards[2] The Gazetteer of India - Volume 3[3] Assam General Knowledge[4] Indian Oil and Gas Industry[5] Chronology of E&P Events in India[6] Treaty of Yandabo | Myanmar-United Kingdom [1826][7] In Assam, Rising Share of Bengali Speakers Doesn't Necessarily Point to 'Infiltration'[8] In Assam, campaign urging Bengali Muslims not to list Assamese as mother tongue has sparked protests[9] Protest against Citizenship Bill -- a whiff of 1979 Assam movement [10] Martyrs of Assam Agitation[11] How Congress’s Failures Helped BJP Communalise The NRC In Assam[12] Kargil War Hero Mohammad Sanaullah Excluded From NRC, Says 'I Am Confident I Will Get Justice'[13] Assam MLA, Kargil War Hero Among 1.9 Million People Left Out Of NRC[14] TMC will never ever allow NRC, CAB in West Bengal: Mamata Banerjee

What should you never say to a C++ programmer?

I am C++ programmer so I am qualified to write an answer of this question.C++ is an object oriented language.No. C++ is a multi paradigm programming language. C++ supports OOP, procedural programming, generic programming, template meta programming and functional programming. It is the one of the biggest strengths of C++ that it is a multi paradigm programming language. Programmers should be free to pick their own programming style, and that style should be fully supported by C++. Why should I define a class just to print “Hello world” ?This quote by Bjarne Stroustrup really makes sense.“Certainly not every good program is object oriented, and not every object oriented program is good.”C++ is just an extension to C and is super set of C.C & C++ both are different programming languages having different rules and standardized by different committees. C & C++ both have diverged since C99. There are many features of C99 and C11 which aren’t officially part of C++ language but some compilers like g++ and clang++ support them as compiler extensions. C++ is not 100% backward compatible with C. There are many programs valid in C but invalid in C++. Read Compatibility of C and C++ - Wikipedia and Incompatibilities Between ISO C and ISO C++ for the detail information.Memory management in C++ is error prone and memory leaks are annoying issue because C++ lacks garbage collection. This is an absolutely wrong misconception that mostly Java & C# programmers have about C++. Garbage collection breaks one of the primary design philosophy of C++: "you don't pay for something you don't use." That means, if you don't need garbage collection the C++ run-time system should not waste its time cleaning up the whole garbage. C++ programmers must avoid using new/new[] and delete/delete[] most of the time. If you need dynamic array use std::vector. If you need a string then use std::string instead of plain C style char[]/char*. If you need singly linked list use std::forward_list. If you need doubly linked list use std::list. Use the standard library containers because they manage the allocation and deallocation automatically themselves. Must read Why should C++ programmers minimize use of 'new'? Deterministic destruction of objects is really important.Bjarne Stroustrup says that:Memory is not the only resource. A resource is anything that has to be acquired and (explicitly or implicitly) released after use. Examples are memory, locks, sockets, file handles, and thread handles. A good resource management system handles all kinds of resources. If the release does not happen, we have a leak, and since there is a finite amount of each kind of resource, eventually the system grinds to a halt. You don’t need an actual leak to cause bad effects; excessive resource retention can be almost as bad. For example, if a system holds on to memory, locks, files, etc., for twice as long, the system needs to be provisioned with potentially twice as many resources. So, I say that C++ is my favorite GC language because it generates so little garbage. C++11 supports a garbage collection interface, so that you can use GC as a last resort (for memory); but before resorting to that, I suggest systematic use of resource handles: Let each resource have an owner in some scope and by default be released at the end of its owner’s scope. This, by the way, is exactly the way Unix handles memory, locks, and files on a per-process basis. In C++, this is known as RAII (“Resource Acquisition Is Initialization”) and is integrated with error handling in the form of exceptions. Resources can be moved from scope to scope using move semantics or “smart pointers,” and shared ownership can be represented by “shared pointers,” shared_ptr, which is a pointer to a shared object that is released (destroyed) when its last shared_ptr goes out of scope (is destroyed). In the C++11 standard library, RAII is pervasive: for example, memory (string, vector, map, unordered_map, etc.), files (ifstream, ofstream, etc.), threads (thread), locks (lock_guard, unique_lock, etc.), and general objects (through unique_ptr and shared_ptr). The result is implicit resource management that is invisible in common use and leads to low resource retention durations.[1]I would sayWithout RAII your C++ code is just bugged code, that avoided compilation error.C++ is an outdated and useless language.C++ is old fashioned language and there is demand of modern languages like Java, C#, Python etc in software industry. Right ? No, extremely wrong. C++ is everywhere from the bottom of ocean to surface of Mars planet.Web browser developers are using (Google Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Internet explorer, Safari, Chromium, Microsoft Edge) are written in C++.Microsoft Windows OS and Mac OS, Symbian OS also use C++ extensively. You use Microsoft Visual Studio to develop .NET programs, right? It has been also written in C++.Famous application software like VLC Media Player, CCleaner, Internet Download Manager, KGB archiver, Media Player Classic, KMPlayer, Notepad++, Microsoft Excel etc. are also written in C++.Facebook also uses C++ extensively. See HHVM - Wikipedia and HipHop for PHP - Wikipedia .You use WinRAR, right? It has been written in C++.The Sun/Oracle VM is written in C++.Office 365 also uses C++.MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server, Apache HTTP Server, MariaDB, MongoDB, Oracle Database, C# compiler has been written in C++.C++ is continuously evolving language since C++11. There is C++14 standard and recent C++ standard is C++17. C++11 feels like new language as said by Bjarne Stroustrup . C++ standard committee is extremely busy for the next C++ standard which is C++20.Footnotes[1] An Interview with Bjarne Stroustrup
