In 2006, I started a Flag Football team in my university.(To those who don’t know, Flag Football is kinda like American Football but more casual. Google it.)To get the ball rolling (heh), IBrought an american football to and from class all day, every day, for almost a year straight. My dorm was on the opposite side of campus to my department, so this way I got to ensure maximum visibility on my daily walks around campus. If anyone asked about the ball I’d be more than happy to toss it around with them. I wasn’t picky; athletic, fat, girl, boy - if someone was interested, I’ll entertain them. By the end of the semester I had about 30 people interested in forming a team.I was also an active member within the fledgling (at the time) Malaysian Flag Football Association. There were around 4 or 5 other teams who were also building themselves up at the time. Most were adults, all were more western- and US-oriented than your typical Malaysian. Half of my team aren’t comfortable conversing in English and almost everyone was not willing to attend the association meetings outside campus. So I was, usually, the sole representative of my team.Met with the university’s sports department to get official recognition (and funding) for our team. Given that Malaysian Flag Football is ran by a small group of enthusiasts, mostly centered around the Klang Valley and has absolutely no support from any level of government, and given that the univeristy’s sports department head was a rugby veteran who looked down on our “no-tackle American-wannabe” sport, you’d appreciate the difficulty we had in getting any sort of support from them.Trained a team of mixed athletic talents and body types in the basic skills of every relevant Flag Football position, plus formulating a viable offensive and defensive game plan in light of the developments of the other teams in the league at the time. I can’t even tell you how many american coaches I talked to and how many of their articles I read just to reach some semblance of competence.And I did all this largely alone, with some support from the more willing players and some friends. Most were only interested in playing and not much else, so I figured it’d be better to let them have fun while I take care of the more administrative work.I saw myself as a true workhorse for the cause of Flag Football in my university and the players as enthusiastic and somewhat selfish, since they’re only there to play and were not concerned with the hard work of building long-lasting foundations. I was the one juggling their interests with that of the university and the association. I was the one reading late into the night to figure out how to help them win. I was the one writing the letters and filling the forms to get their injuries covered by the university. I did all that, selflessly, for years on end, while all they did was play. And by god if any one of those boys said to me that I didn’t deserve their respect and that they want to be called Captain instead, I’d whoop his butt all the way from Perlis to Singapore.I imagine that in the 10 years I worked on that project, I got an inkling of what Tun Dr. Mahathir feels in all his 70.
