PDF Editor FAQ

What was the greatest final film of an actor?

Kent Fung and James McLean reference him in their lists, but I think it's worth a special mention of John Cazale's performance in Deer Hunter.Cazale, a former roommate of Al Pacino's, was in that circle of actors who helped remake film in the early 1970's. He only acted in five movies, but talk about a resume! The GodfatherThe ConversationThe Godfather Part IIDog Day AfternoonThe Deer HunterHe was so remarkable at inhabiting sad, desperate characters like Fredo Corleone. Imagine how much less depth a movie like The Godfather would have without someone with Cazale's chops as a counterweight to Pacino:\Cazales was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer before the filming of Deer Hunter. At the time he was in a relationship with co-star Meryl Streep. Director Michael Cimino rearranged the shooting schedule so all of Cazale's scenes could be shot first. Allegedly the insurance on Cazale was so high that the studio wouldn't agree to cast him and fellow actor Robert De Niro had to step in and pay the bill himself. Cazale died before he was able to see the final film, which went on to win five Academy Awards including best picture.

What does no one tell you about job searching?

What does no one tell you about job searching?Part I :I applied to a company located in Gurgaon. I like to attend interviews so I give interviews no matter what. They shortlisted my resume & sent invite with no zoom link.On the day of interview, the HR called me at 3 and asked “Navin are you ready”. I said I was ready and she said she will send me the link. Again no link was shared. At 4 she called me and said interviewer was having a bad day. They postponed the interview and again I waited. She called me this time at 2 and said she will send an invite. Again no zoom link and I was waiting. At 3.10 she called me and said, the interviewer was having a sore throat. Thus she again postponed the interview. In text messages she sent me a text blaming me for having network issues while she cut the call after a ring. I was frustrated.Imagine a scenario where I don’t have a job and the HR doing this - I would’ve definitely waited again. What does nobody tells about job searching? It is frustrating. At times people really treat you like shit and they don’t care about you.Part II : People don’t really tell how to do a job searching to candidates. My tips to people who search : Few things I noted while applying to a company :- A cover letter is very important.- Workday rarely works (Algorithm is very perfect & it needs perfect stuff)- Commenting "interested" is not gonna work- "English" is very important.- Technical skills > Theory skills- Lying in resume = Getting screwed in future- Honesty is definitely the best policy- Targeting startups is best way to learn & grow.- Linkedin & Glassdoor are the best places to know about the company.- Never apply to any company without knowing about "What they do"- Never feel depressed because you are rejected in one company. There is a lot more out there.- Never give up.I wrote this answer in two parts just to share my experience in searching a job and things I noted while applying to a company. I found my current job via linkedin & linkedin is definitely one of the best search engines next to indeed. All the best :)Image source : ScreenshotsThanks for reading.

How did Rahul Gulati from Jaypee Institute of Information Technology get hired by Facebook and then by Google?

I was reached out by Google, Facebook, and a few more companies, mainly because of my achievements in programming competitions. I was among the top 500 in each of Google CodeJam (Round II), TopCoder Open (Round II), and Facebook HackerCup (Round III) in the year when these companies reached me out. These companies do reach out to potential candidates for job opportunities if they do well in the programming competitions organized by them. I did prepare a lot for these interviews and I will give you my advice on how you could go about doing the same.Programming LiteratureYou would need to develop a good amount of expertise in a programming language of your choice. The most commonly used languages are C/C++ and Java, so I'll be recommending literature only for these. For C/C++, I'd recommend C++ Primer Plus and C++ Primer (the latter is a little more advanced). For Java, I'd recommend Java: The Complete Reference.Algorithms and Data Structures Literature and CoursesFor programming interviews as well as competitive programming, you would need to have a solid grasp of the various common algorithms and data structures, algorithm design paradigms, and the ability to analyze algorithms. For text, I'd recommend Introduction to Algorithms. This is a great book for theory, exercises, and problems, and covers most of the stuff you're going to need. For courses, I'd recommend the following:Introduction to AlgorithmsAlgorithms: Design and Analysis Part IAlgorithms: Design and Analysis Part IIAlgorithms Part IAlgorithms Part IIThis should serve as a pretty exhaustive list of algorithms and data structures that are commonly used to solve competitive programming problems. You should read about these, code, and use as a library for solving your problems.Problem Solving LiteratureApart from having knowledge about various algorithms and data structures, you'd also need to develop a really strong problem solving ability. Problems such as those that appear in Olympiads really help with it. Some of the texts I'd recommend for this are:The Art and Craft of Problem SolvingHow To Solve ItProblem Solving StrategiesA Path to Combinatorics for UndergraduatesOnline Judges and CompetitionsHere is a list of some competitions that you can participate in. You'll learn by solving new problems, looking at other participants' code, as well as reading editorials to learn multiple solutions to these problems.Google CodeJam - The competition happens annually. There are several rounds (Qualification, Round 1, Round 2, Round 3, and World Finals) and the top 25 contestants for the World Finals Round are brought onsite, and the winner gets a prize money of 15,000$. The top finishers are usually reached out for a potential job opportunity. Problems that have appeared before are available on the website with solutions, and input and output files.Facebook HackerCup - Another annual worldwide programming competition with multiple rounds. The winner gets a prize money of 10,000$. Just as with CodeJam, the top finishers are reached out for a potential job opportunity. You should be able to find the problems that have appeared before on the website.ACM ICPC (International Collegiate Programming Contest) - An annual programming competition for university students. Participation is in teams of three. There are multiple rounds (online, regional onsite rounds, and World Finals). Universities world over host online and regional onsite competitions, and the winners from these advance to the World Finals. Previous problems are available on the website and are the best source for practice in preparing for this competition.Codeforces - Codeforces Rounds are held almost every week, and many more competitions take place as well. You can practice solving problems that have appeared in previous Codeforces Rounds and other competitions.TopCoder - TopCoder SRMs are held almost every week. And TopCoder Open is held once every year. You can also practice solving previous problems in the TopCoder Arena. In SRMs, there are two divisions; Division I and Division II. You start off by competing in Division II and if you do well, then you move up to Division I. There are 3 problems given each in Division I and II, and this is how I would roughly rank them in order of difficulty - Div II Level I < Div II Level II ~ Div I Level I < Div II Level III ~ Div I Level II < Div I Level III. There is also a section for Competitive Programming tutorials that I would highly recommend. The top finishers are usually reached out by sponsors (Google, Facebook, etc) for potential job opportunities. You can even use their forums to discuss the problems that you’re stuck, or to know about programming competitions that are happening around, and a lot more.CodeChef - There is a really challenging 10 day long competition that happens once every month. There are also two shorter (2.5 to 3 hour long) contests that take place every month. There are also plenty of other competitions that take place on this platform that are usually organized by different entities.Project Euler - As the website says, a series of challenging mathematical/computer science problems. Math lovers would really enjoy solving problems on this website.HackerRank - Lots of programming competitions and problems are available on this website. And there are a lot more domains other than just algorithms.Internet Problem Solving Contest - This is another annual team programming competition. There is just one round. The problems range from very easy to very hard and not all problems require the skills usually used in programming competitions.Interview Texts and SourcesTo prepare specifically for the interview part, I'd recommend the following:Cracking The Coding Interview and Elements of Programming Interviews - I think these are amazing books containing lots of problems for coding interviews, advice on cultural interviews, how your resume should look like, white board problem solving, and much more.InterviewBit - An amazing website co-founded by my friend Anshuman Singh (I had taken his advice to prepare for programming competitions while I was in university, had met him at ACM ICPC competitions, and we also worked at Facebook at the same time). It contains a variety of problems that would be great for your preparation. They have also recently launched a system design course. If you do really well, they'd reach you out and refer you to some of the top companies out there and also help you prepare for the interviews by conducting mocks. There’s more I could add to the answer but for the scope of this question, I think this answer suffices. If there's more you'd like to ask, please do so in the comments, and I'll try to include it in my answer.
