There is one downside to having a high IQ that all the other downsides flow from: nearly the entirety of the rest of the population operates on a level that is not stimulating to a high IQ person.I’m going to talk about people in the three sigma and higher range (IQs about 145 and up on the standard tests) as this is the approximate point that serious qualitative differences in thinking, and not just quantitative differences, begin to appear. People with IQs about this level and up I’ll refer to as the “extremely gifted.”The hardest qualitative experience of the extremely gifted is social isolation. Like everything else that is difficult about extreme giftedness, this flows from the fact that there is unlikely to be a single person, in almost every environment the gifted individual finds themselves in, that operates on a level that is stimulating. Most of the population, for example, rather just form an emotionally based opinion on a political issue and take solace in a group of like minded others. The extremely gifted, more likely, would rather closely examine the issue, relate it to general philosophical principles, and compare it to similar issues through the use of analogy. Not only would such an analysis likely confuse an individual of average intelligence, but few would even find such an examination interesting or valuable in the first place.Productivity problems, both in academic and career form, flow from the same root. Extremely gifted people tend to grow bored with the pace of school and the modern workplace. Both of these institutions are designed not only for people that think and operate at a slower pace, but for people that have completely different values and procedures for thinking.In the workplace it’s common for extremely gifted people to butt heads against authority figures, and to offend coworkers, when they use their gifts to go well beyond their job role. They often see connections between different aspects of the company and will step on toes when operating on those connections. It would be far more advantageous for the company and the gifted individual if they were allowed to plan out their own work and operate freely, but this is something largely unavailable in the modern workplace.It is common for the extremely gifted to also take the William James Sidis route and shut down. The complaints about the gifted being lazy are tied to this. When the world just is not stimulating, it is tempting for the extremely gifted to use their minds toward achieving the minimum requirements for the minimum effort. When the minimum is done, then the gifted individual can pursue interests that do stimulate them. Procrastination is just the reverse order of this phenomenon: the gifted person pursues their interests now and does the minimum later.High IQ most certainly comes with a host of life difficulties, but they all flow from the difference in pacing. The pace and means that most of the world operates by is not satisfactory to extremely gifted people. They often become bored with school, work, and other people. The challenge for high IQ people is finding life strategies to meet their needs for stimulation.

The following is one of a few stories that resulted in my being banned from having any contact with customers.It was at a trade show in Atlanta where our rep firm held an annual party for sales staff, buyers, store owners, and manufacturers (like us).As often happens, an especially comely woman was surrounded by men, including me, vying for her attention. Ms Trophy Wife, clothed in a dress with a revealing slit almost up to her hip, was obviously enjoying the attention while her hubby stood across the room seething.I’m not sure why, but I heard myself saying, “I really like your slit!”Before the exclamation was out of my mouth I knew I’d screwed up - again.Had we been alone, my faux pas might have gotten a pass. Unfortunately, the men started hooting, howling, clapping, and guffawing as if my comment was the funniest thing they’d ever heard.The woman turned bright red and ran out of the room but then returned, accepted my apology, and gave me a hug.While all this was going on, her husband found his briefcase and removed the order he’d placed for our products for his 27 store chain. With all eyes on him and me, he tore up the order form.We never sold anything to any of his gift shops after that.My big mouth cost at least $100K, and possibly more, in lost sales. Not to mention the bad will with the salesman and repping firm.Wish I could say, “Lesson learned.”As my brother likes to warn people, “You know that little voice in the back of your head that says, ‘Don’t say it?’ Well, Charles doesn’t have one.”

Happened to fill a luckydraw form in Phoenix Mall,Pune and got a call the very next day saying I have won the lucky draw and have to collect the gifts from their office which is besides the mall.They insisted that wife should be with me as they will be giving away the gifts only to married couples..We reached the office at around 7.20pm and got 2–3 confirmation calls from them till then.The lady who received us from the lift didn't even wish us and told it will take at least 1hr to handover the gifts as they have to send our details and photographs to Hyderabad headoffice and post approval only they can give the gifts :DWe sat in office for 5mins .One guy took our photos and in between 2people informed us we have to attend 1hr session and confirmed we are ready for it.We agreed..Presentation started.They started boasting about country club,3 guys took turns and presented their topics in very orderly manner.The senior most person was very serious.. :P Some of his divine lines were, 'You should be giving an Yes or No in an hour as offer is valid only till then''Don't make any calls or consult anyone as you are grown enough to take a decision on your own':DMy wife didn't show much interest in the whole process but I was eager to hear more and more 'conditions' and 'offers' from them.They kept on asking if I liked their 'idea' and I insisted them on disclosing the rates which they did only after 50mins through the session.And here it is,195000 initial payment and 10500 maintenance charges per year for 30 years. So total Rs.5,10,000.I politely replied, your package may be good but from the way you got me here, I can't trust your words blindly, I need to do research and will get back to you.They made me sit for almost 75 mins and was eagerely waiting for those magical three letters,YES.Nothing of that sort happened and I politely bid goodbye to them and walked out of the room towards the lift and the guy who was presenting called us from behind and asked to collect the gifts. We collected the items and left the place.Once I reached home I just searched ‘country club' in quora and saw many links and read numerous answers where people have written their experience and at the end I felt relaxed and got 100% feeling in mind that I didn't let someone trick me into paying for substandard facilities and long-term tension..If they are good, they are going to stay and we will avail the offers in future as well.But,seeing their customer feedback and the tactics they play for getting new customers I feel the bubble will burst soon..
