Because it’s illegal.When the Founding Fathers were drafting the foundation of the USA government, they had a problem with some people in our country still being loyal to the British crown. It would have been easy for loyalists to find support in England to help those loyalists get elected here, with the idea that if the loyalists attained enough power, they could return the USA to control by England.And so, because the USA was formed by severing long ties with England, our laws were established with strict and absolute prohibitions on accepting any sort of election help or interference from a foreign power.Other countries may not have such strict laws, but with our revolutionary founding, strict measures were absolutely necessary.HOW CAN REPUBLICANS BE OKAY WITH THIS?I’ve been about a 50–50 independent voter for about 50 years. I’ve voted to help keep a balance of power. I liked the Democrats having some power because they are kinder and more caring and give the country a heart. I’ve liked the Republicans having some power to make sure the Dems don’t run away with my checkbook, or get so caught up in caring about local matters that they let a foreign power get too far toward control of the USA.But now?Well, now, the Republicans have proven that they have zero fiscal restraint. They have loved to label the Democrats as “the tax and spend party.” And, that’s true.But it turns out that the Republicans are “the don’t tax, but spend even more party.” And that is a horrendously poor way to run a government. They are absolutely running away with my checkbook and making me write checks that should be written by the richest 0.1% of Americans. And my grandkids are going to pay for it, too.And then there’s the final factor, which is that they are okay with the President of the United States allowing the dictator of Russia to control him.I will never vote for another (R) candidate ever again. Even if they get on board and vote in the Senate to convict and remove Trump, it’s too late.The party in which Mitch McConnell, Lindsey Graham, Jim Jordan, Mark Meadows and Devin Nunes are giving total support to Donald Trump will never again have my trust.I will never again regard them as co-equal balancers on the scale between liberal and conservative. They’ve become something else—something that I wish could be purged from this country.

90% of what you learned in high school are utterly useless in real life. Algebra, geometry, chemistry. Unless you develop a career in these areas, you will likely never use them again in your life again. We graduate millions of students who have no idea how to read credit card statements, balance checkbooks, or change a flat tire.You know what skill sets high school graduates should have for 2021?The ability to calmly communicate without getting angry.Critical thinking & the ability to identify fake news and scams, and not fall prey to shit like multi level marketing and payday lending.The ability to balance a checkbooks, and how not to spend more than you earn.Know how our political system works, and not falling prey to scoundrel and demagogues.The ability to write reasonably well and form a coherent argument.The ability to follow instructions and solve problems.Know how to date. Know the boundaries of what’s considered unacceptable, and how to identify + avoid sociopaths on the market.How to cook some basic meals, instead of resorting to fast food and Ramen.Okay I bashed algebra and trigonometry, but statistics is definitely very useful. Everyone should know what a standard deviation is. You don’t need to know how to derive one, just a basic understanding would suffice.None of these skills are taught on a high school level. Instead I spent a semester learning how to use trig tables and graphing calculator. My cousin went to a high school in Boston where she had to take four years of Latin. That’s right, Latin, that dead language. I took four semesters of Spanish, but honestly how much high school Spanish will you ever remember after a decade? I could have used all that precious time for more useful things. But instead I had to figure everything out on my own.Reform? Did I hear that you think we should reform the high school curriculum? Well then let me introduce you to this thing called the Teacher’s Union. They will cock block any meaningful reforms and have done so for the past 5 decades. George Bush tried it, Barack Obama tried it. Both gave up and learned to shut their face.Finally, I just gave up and sent my son to private school. Private schools are not perfect, but they are much more flexible and responsive to parental demands. (Brownie Point if you could figure out which school this is)(Edit: I am not saying we shouldn’t teach chemistry & algebra in high school, but they should be electives. Inspire kids the curiosity to learn, and those who choose to pursue should have the chance. But for vast majority of the population they will never use it. Mandatory curriculums should be courses like basic finance, investing 101, inter-human relationship, etc)

I spent 20 years in the military, and had to teach a formal class on remedial reading and math at three separate commands. We had many sailors who could not read a newspaper, fill out a form, or balance a checkbook.No, this surprises me not at all. There’s a strong cult of ignorance in the US, where education is ridiculed and people who try to better themselves are called “uppity”. I hate it.
