I lived in Boston and moved to the Bay Area as well as my second time lived in upstate and moved again to the Bay Area.Jobs are plentiful, that’s for sure. It’s one of the big things you get when you live there. There are so many startups that you can take a flyer on a startup and if it fails you can move on pretty quickly.And you can possibly strike it rich with a stock based compensation plan that turns into something.The weather is awesome, that is unless you live at the tip of the peninsula in San Francisco. Why anyone would want to live there I’ll never understand. Think about this for a minute. you can plan an outdoor activity between 5/1 and 11/1 and NEVER have to worry that it might rain. It won’t.You're close to the ocean but can also get in your car and be in the mountains skiing in a few hours.The place is incredibly culturally and ethnically diverse. Maybe even more so than NYC. It’s an amazing melting pot of different cultures that come together in somewhat harmony (more on this in a minute)Now the downside:everything is extremely expensive. Much of this is driven by real estate. Houses on the peninsula will sell for $1K/square foot (e.g. a 3,000 foot house is $3M and will sell in minutes likely above listing price). [this was pre-covid, maybe things have changed]. If you get further out you can find places for $500/foot. I sold my house in San Ramon for that much. But gas is more expensive, your car registration is more expensive, milk, bread and even your haircut is more expensive. The only things that aren’t are things like produce that is grown in CA.And although salaries are higher they don’t make up for the difference in cost of living. Not even close.Traffic is awful. So many people are employed in the Valley and SF that can’t afford to live there so they go further out, mainly South (Morgan Hill, etc) or East (Pleasanton, San Ramon, Walnut Creek, etc) and the traffic to get to the jobs is horrible. There really is no public transport unless you work in the city and can take BART to get there. But if you work on the peninsula or in San Jose forget it. The drive from my house to North San Jose was 30 miles and took me 1.5 hours in the morning and close to 2 hours in the evening. (or if I went to work at 5:30 it would take me a half hour so at least I was able to not go crazy in one direction).Unless you are a committed leftist you’re not going to like it. Don’t even think of telling someone that you might have voted for Trump, you’ll be ostracized before the words come out of your mouth. people will try to get you fired from your job if you disagree with their agenda. I know people who voted for Trump in the last election that are deathly afraid that their colleagues will find out.Taxes are very high, this includes the income tax (California has a graduated income tax that tops out at 12.6% if you make more than $250K) and property tax that is 1.1% of the current value of the house you buy. 1.1% of a $3M house is $33K a year in taxes! Buckle up!Although there is a lot of cultural diversity there is not a lot of diversity when it comes to economic diversity. you will be around 2-income professional families no matter where you live. Those are the only people who can afford to be there. You won’t find the guy who cleans your pool or the woman that repairs your car living anywhere near you. Just can’t happen. And as was mentioned above, diversity of thought is non existent.I did it twice, the second time I was there for 12 years, the first time for 4. I’m glad I’m gone as life is simpler where I live today and I’m way less stressed.
