Oh, that’s easy. A junior football coach caught a well-known senior football coach molesting a young boy who was in that coach’s football camp. The junior football coach reported this to the head coach and athletic director. The head coach, AD, and university president conspired to hide the incident and protect the molester. When it came to light, it brought down one of the great coaching legacies in college football. The former university president is still employed, AFAIK, although as a faculty member with no responsibilities.I will have nothing to do with that institution until they get rid of him and give me a new PhD diploma without his signature.

My wallet will hate me for saying this, but if you want to improve public education, you’re not going to do it by throwing more money at teachers.I make decent pay. I’ve maxed out my earnings and am at the far right and bottom of my payscale (for those who aren’t savvy concerning teacher pay, that’s as good as it gets). I’ll see a few more bumps for longevity, but that’s it. The best-paid teacher in my district isn’t making $100k unless they’re getting major money for doing some other huge job on top of teaching, like being an athletics director (a nightmare I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy). In some places with really high costs of living, you may see teachers making more than $100,000, but I imagine it’s incredibly rare unless they (like an athletics director) have some other GIANT irons in the fire. For some reason, I feel compelled to state that my superintendent makes more than $350,000 per year.So what would happen if you paid teachers more than $100,000 per year? It might result in teaching becoming a more competitive job, thus getting a more innovative and qualified body of candidates, but that is only a “might.” It would cost an awful lot for quite a gamble.On the other hand, most of the teachers I know already work really hard. I don’t think you’re going to squeeze that much more out of us. My school has an average class size of around 32:1 in a good year. That gives me 160 students. A bad year saw me with 185. I just don’t know how much more I have to give. More money isn’t going to get me to work harder. Whip a pig all you want, you won’t get him to fly.How can you improve education? I would argue that there are two ways:Empower administrators and make them work their asses off. Administrators make a lot of money but often don’t really have the chops for the job. They aren’t terribly innovative, lack the intellectual and creative capital to do the job, and have an incredibly difficult time with follow-through. Even if they were supplied with those qualities in abundance, they have very little power and support to accomplish their missions.Throw money at my students. I don’t mean to give them cash, but the number one thing that correlates with success in school is socio-economics. I wouldn’t just give them cash, but we need to find ways to help their families. Find ways to help Mom and Dad get a better education and training, leading to better jobs.
