PDF Editor FAQ
Have you ever had a procedure done to you by a doctor without your consent? How did you find out?
They didn’t do it to me, but to my newborn daughter.I was hospitalized for weeks after my csection for severe pneumonia and postpartum cardiomyopathy. My daughter was in the NICU down the street for her many medical problems.I told my fiancé to do what he needed to do to get her well as I was obviously in no shape to do so. The hospital refused to recognize his authority as he was not the mother. Since I was in the hospital they decided to just take over her care.It started with little things. Not letting either of us know what was going on. I called multiple times daily to check on her. I called once to find out she was in her room but was getting a CAT scan. I immediately called my fiance pissed he didn’t tell me what was going on. But he didn’t know anything about it either. He went there pissed that they didn’t tell him and they told him it wouldn’t happen again.A few days later I called to check on her and was told she was in surgery. I freaked out on them telling them they had no right. They disagreed. She was having a gtube put in. I was confused. She ate fine for her dad just got tired out easily due to her heart conditions. Turned out the nurses didn’t have the time to be patient with her. That was the last straw. I checked myself out of the rehab center and drove straight to my daughter and announced I was having her transferred. I was told I couldn’t and if I tried I would be banned from seeing her. So I basically had to play nice with them or not be allowed to see my daughter. She was finally discharged when she was 2 months old but not without me fighting them on it. I stopped all contact with that hospital and their doctors. I truly feel like they tried to steal my baby.Edit: Before someone else attacks me I need to explain something. After I gave birth to my daughter I was diagnosed with severe pneumonia and postpartum cardiomyopathy. My heart had trouble pumping. A side effect of cardiomyopathy is that my legs got so swollen I lost all feeling in them. As a result I had to go to a rehab center for PHYSICAL THERAPY. I have never done drugs or alcohol and certainly would never put my baby’s life in danger and do them while pregnant.
Should the British ditch their health care system and replace it with what the U.S has?
I suspect that your question might not be genuine but, I want to share my story anyway. I live in the United States. My husband and I have currently have excellent employer sponsored healthcare through Kaiser Permanente NW. (We did when this nightmare started as well- and had Cigna for a brief period of time)When my son was 15, he got hurt wrestling. His back pain was severe. We took him in and the doctor completed an exam and ordered X-rays. He sent us home with some NSAIDs and ordered rest, ice, etc.Months and many follow-up visits later, my son was still in severe pain. Kaiser refused to order any additional imaging or authorize a visit to a specialist. My son was barely walking and Kaiser said, “He will be fine. Take meds and rest.”Six months post injury he was still in horrific pain and I raised heck with member services. They authorized ONE physical therapy visit and gave him a brace. No imaging. In desperation, we self-referred to Shriner’s Northern California. We were moving to California and our insurance was going to lapse temporarily. They accepted him as a patient. He was seen at Shriner’s by a neurosurgeon, and our new insurance authorized the imaging without issue. It turned out his pain was caused by a spinal fracture at L4/5. Early diagnosis and treatment could have spared him a lot of pain . . . and surgeries.Unfortunately, even though his new team tried physical therapy, it was too late. After it failed, his Shriner’s neurosurgeon recommended the least invasive surgery possible. This surgery failed, too.A year later, he had to have spinal fusion surgery. And the spinal fusion surgery caused a cerebral spinal fluid leak. (CSF Leak: A Curable Cause of Headache)To add insult to injury, after the spine fusion surgery, we ended up having to move back to the northwest and the only insurance employers seem to offer up here is Kaiser. And . . . Kaiser does not employ their own physicians who treat his particular medical condition. My husband and I were well aware of this fact so we opted to pay for their more expensive added choice plan that allows us to take him to specialists outside their network. However, they have continued to make our lives miserable by denying the most expensive claims. My son is 19 now and disabled so I have fought Kaiser on every denial all the way up to the Oregon Independent Review Board. And when I win, they still don’t pay. (I won my last one March 2nd and they are still refusing to pay.)And the irony in all of this is that if Kaiser had taken him seriously and treated him appropriately early on, he probably would have been fine.If you are in a country with universal healthcare, thank your lucky stars!!!
What are the most disturbing things you have seen in the medical field?
When you work in the hospital, you sometimes witness things that make you realize that it is not always the sickness that takes away a patient’s life. It is sometimes the people around. It occasionally introduces you to the dark side of humanity. The college at which I studied physical therapy had an adjoining government hospital where the medical and the allied health students interned. For those who are unaware, this is what the government hospitals in developing countries look like:ImageThe general ward for each specialty has a large room consisting of 80–100 beds. It is an open view room that has beds arranged in rows with little to zero privacy. The entire ward has about 4 to 5 nurses (+ student nurses), a couple of ward boys and a common toilet at the end.In the second year of study, I was posted in the surgery ward for a month. In the ward was a woman, in her mid-fifties, who was admitted for an ill-managed case of diabetes. Let us call her Lata*. Lata’s uncontrolled diabetes had lead to a gangrenous ulcer in her foot. The ulcer was infected and the infection had escalated to a level requiring amputation of her leg including the knee. Taking away her leg was the only way to keep her alive.Lata was assigned to a bed in the corner of the ward near a window. Since she was a fresh amputee, she was suffering from ‘phantom leg sensations’ — a common condition in amputees where their brain perceives the presence of the leg that was surgically removed. The feeling eventually passes but while it lasts, it can be quite unnerving and unsettling. Their brain senses the presence of a leg that their eyes do not see. It is something that requires attention and counseling. This made Lata a special case. She needed constant help but the 5 nurses allotted to the ward could not afford her the continuous attention.A special, woman caretaker was thus assigned the job. Her duties included helping Lata shower, use the toilet, change her clothes, maintain decent hygiene and give her company. But good lord, was the caretaker a satanic minion. She started with scolding, insulting and demeaning Lata for every small request she made. Lata often cried several times a day.Lata was still not trained enough to use her crutches to move around independently. She was connected to multiple catheters giving her drugs, too. She often needed to pee and poo in the bedpan but not without help. The caregiver never attended to her bathroom calls. Lata routinely soiled her hospital gowns. This lead to more screaming and more yelling. Poor Lata would then apologize, embarrassed through her bones to have pooped and peed in front of a 100 patient ward.Soiling of the gown meant Lata needed multiple changes of clothes in a day. Again, she needed help but the caregiver would not have any of it. She crossed all line.Instead of pulling on a screen while changing Lata’s clothes to give her some privacy, she would strip Lata naked in front of the entire ward, screaming ‘What the hell did you do!”.The ward had children, men, women, doctors, and a gazillion others who ogled at Lata unabashedly while Lata cried, her gaze pinned to the floor, her head hanging in shame.Episodes like such repeated again. And again. and Again. Unfortunately, Lata had no family to come to her rescue. The situation only worsened as days and weeks passed. Lata’s mental health started to deteriorate. She would dread the arrival of the caretaker lady each morning. Any loud noises, like that of a dropped glass, would startle Lata. Her physical health wasn’t exactly improving either. She had developed a post-surgical infection. She was often left soaking in the puddle of her feces, barely fed, always sobbing into her pillow. It was all going downhill.Astonishingly, the authorities reacted to the ordeal by turning their backs to it. Any attempt of calling their attention to the matter was met with indifference. It was as though Lata’s life did not matter. As expected, within a month Lata passed away of severe infection. To many, this may seem tragic. To me, who had witnessed her plight for over a month, it felt like the much-needed freedom Lata deserved. God bless her soul. The charade shook me to my very core. It made me realize I have been living an extremely privileged life. I have a loving family. I have parents who are affluent enough to afford good quality medical care. They will protect me. I will never be as helpless as Lata. I will never be stripped of my dignity. I will never be reduced to a laughing stock. No one will ever violate my basic rights as a human.Do you realize what kind of advantage that is?It has been many, many years since Lata passed. I’ve cared for many patients thereafter. I’ve witnessed several deaths and multiple unpleasant sights. Yet, her experience is what has stuck with me. Even today, when I think of Lata, her intense cries for help and her blood chilling moans fill up my memory.Ironically, Lata, too, was a nurse.*Name has been changed.
