Will I ever be able to get into an IIT?

This story is about a student who made it from nowhere to somewhere no one expected him to be.This story is about me.It’s gonna be long. I hope you’ll read it till the end.So, I was just another mediocre student in one of the best schools of my city. Never made it to the Top 10 of my class. Scored CGPA 9.0 in Class 10, was quite happy with that score, even though it was not that good. Opted for Science stream because of my interest in Maths and Physics. But as the time passed by, I started to hate Physics after a few months in Class 11. Throughout the year, I was not able to do well in exams, but, managed to pass in all the subjects.January 26th, 2015 - It was Republic Day. I was coming back from school with my friend on his bike. On a blind turn near my home, a car coming from the other side hit our bike. I was airborne for about a couple of seconds. My friend, escaped the accident unharmed. While, I was lying there in pain. I injured in my lower back. I could not get up because of pain. The car which hit us fled away. My friend was confused and worried. There was no one around to help. He called up my Mom. Since my home was nearby, my parents arrived in a few minutes. I was taken to the hospital. Fortunately, both of us were wearing helmets, so no head injury. But, unfortunately, a fracture was detected in my lower backbone. I had Scoliosis from birth, this made the situation even worse. For those, who don’t know what is Scoliosis, have a look at this picture.February 2015 - Only a few days were left for the final exams. The tension was increasing day-by-day. The pain was a bit less than before, but still immense. I could not do anything. I could not even go to the washroom on my own. I missed my friends and school. I felt crying, but didn’t because that made my parents sad. I didn’t feel like studying. The only thing I did was, watching videos on YouTube on various topics of Physics and Chemistry. My parents told me not to take much stress because of exams. But, I wanted to give the exams and do well. Everyday, after my dad came back from office, I asked him to just read out the chapters and I used to listen him quietly. I knew this kind of preparation was not enough to score well in exams, but I had no other option.March 2015 - Exam time. By now, my condition was a little better. Now, I could sit, but no longer than 10–15 minutes. My dad requested the school to allow me to take few breaks in middle of the exam, as I could not sit for 3 hours straight. They agreed. Enduring all the pain, I somehow managed to give all the exams.4th April 2015 - Result time. I knew that my exams went bad. I was not expecting much. I still remember, it was Saturday. I went to school along with my parents. My Class Teacher handed over the report card to me. I quickly glanced through the marks, my overall percentage was 58%. I knew it was really bad. But, what I saw next shook me from head to toe. In the remarks section, it was written, “Not ready for the next class”, that too by the Principal herself. I was in shock, couldn’t understand what’s happening. My Dad asked the Class Teacher about it. He told us that I got the lowest marks in my class. He asked us to talk to the Principal. My parents went to the Principal’s room. They were in there for 15–20 mins. When they came out, I saw tears in my mom’s eye. I knew something bad had happened. They told me that the school wants me to repeat Class 11. The Principal didn’t listen to anything. Instead, she said that all the accident thing was just an ‘excuse’. The Principal said that, "If we promote your son to Class 12 and he doesn't do well, then it would ruin the school's reputation. We want results.". My parents again visited her the next day, and they were again insulted and humiliated. My parents kept trying, but they didn’t listen to anything. Meanwhile, I decided not to repeat. Asked my parents to stop trying now. We did some research on the Internet, an finally decided to go for NIOS.April 2015 to May 2016 - The period when some crazy shit happened (in a good way). The period when I forgot all my pain and started to work my ass off. It was not at all easy, but whatever happened in the past, gave me more strength and made me stronger. Support from my parents and elder brother was the best thing I had. I was determined and knew that it’s not time to look back and get sad. I didn’t join any coaching classes and decided to prepare on my own. I started Class 11 topics all over again, and practiced problems more than ever. I started doing Yoga and Meditation to lower my pain.I missed my friends and school. But, we all met very frequently, so I never felt lonely or alone. My friends knew the situation I was in and the kind of support they provided me through my hard times was just remarkable. The time passed by very quickly, but everything felt under control. I was still in pain, even after regular medicines and consultation from doctor. But, I had stopped thinking about all that and kept pushing myself. I studied around 8–9 hours daily. I also solved hundreds of sample paper before the exams and was quite confident about my preparation. My board exams and JEE Main went pretty well. I qualified for JEE Advanced.22nd May 2016 - The day, I was waiting for over an year. I was tensed and many things were going around in my mind. When we reached the Exam Centre, my dad told me only one thing, “Look son, I know you have worked very hard. It will be all good. Don’t worry. No matter what the result will be, I will always be there for you.” His words gave me some kind of confidence which is not explainable. I went to the Exam Hall calmly and gave the exam without any tension. It went well.12th June 2016 - Result Day. The result was delayed for a few hours because of server error. But finally, after a long wait, it was out.JEE ADVANCED AIR - 21XX :-)That moment was undoubtedly the happiest moment of my life. Everyone was happy. I was in tears (tears of joy, of course). We partied hard that day.By the way, I forgot to tell you all, I also secured 92% in NIOS boards and 212 marks in JEE Main.Like every story, my story also ended happily. I’ll be joining one of the top IITs next month!! :)So, ONE YEAR TOOK ME FROM BEING A FAILURE TO BEING AN IITian.I know getting into IIT is not the end. I will continue to work hard and try to achieve something even bigger in future.Things I learnt in this one year-The world is result-oriented. You will have to prove yourself at any cost. No one’s gonna listen to your problems. If you are determined enough to achieve your goal, no one can stop you. No person, no pain, nothing.Respect your parents. They will be the ones who will stand beside you no matter what happens next.People will say many things. There is no need to pay attention to what others tell you. Believe in yourself. You know yourself the best, and that’s what matters.Make good friends. Situations tell you who are your ‘real friends’. I’m glad to have them.Hardwork always pay off.And most importantly, Never ever lose hope.BTW, no one else from my previous school even qualified JEE Advanced. I would have been the third IITian from that school, but, their bad luck. :PSo, one year also took me from being first from the bottom of the list to first from the top of the list. So, the answer to your question. Will you be able to get into an IIT?Yes, you will. Just believe in yourself and work hard. And even if you don’t get into IIT, it will not be the end. There is a long way to go my friend. It’s just the beginning. Hardwork always pay off.P.S. Going Anonymous because still many people don’t know about my story and I don’t want them to know. I want to start afresh at my college and forget my past. Hope you all will understand.Edit 1- Taken admission in one of the core branches at IIT Madras. Super Happy!! :-)

How was BITSAT 2017?

I gave my bitsat today morning slot 9:00 to 12:00It wasn't as easy as speculated. Here's my analysis subjectwise:-PHYSICS- My slot had no questions based on telecommunications, modern physics, fluids.Major chunk of questions were from mechanics,5 or 6 from electrostatics and magnetics .Some questions were asked from thermodynamics and heat.overall it was quite easy section with 30–35 easily attemptable. Some questions:-What is the work done if pressure is varied as P=A+BV?Two trains moving with some velocity in opp Directions a bird is sitting on one train. Distance travelled by it?A person with some mass is running with same velocity as of car. Suddenly he enters the car what is final speed of car?Magnetic moment of an octant?(figure was provided)A solenoid ( dimensions and turns per unit length was given)is connected with resistance. The current reaches steady state with some value given.Find time constant?Resistance between two points A and B (figure was given)?Dimensions of permitivity?CHEMISTRY- The most tricky part with many questions unheard of.There were at least 8–9 factual questions.(unlucky with that). The rest of the paper was damn easy with majority questions from physical chem and some organic questions. Some questions-Ka of weak monobasic acid was given two samples of this acid with concentrations of hydronium ions given. Final concentration of hydronium ion was asked? What is percentage of titanium used in preparation of nitric acid?how is fullerene detected?Conjugate base of H3PO4?Work is done on system and heat is absorbed by system which of the following is correct thermodynamic equation?Mole concept question on habers process.Shape of BeCl2 in monomer, dimer and polymer form?Which one has zero dipole moment?MATHS- 20–25 were very easy rest being extremely lengthy following the jee mains trend.Took me about an hour and 20 minutes to complete.Cant really post any question here.Majority questions(Topicwise):-AlgebraYup that's it, the test should have been renamed. One or two questions from conic sections.English and LR- Most easy section from the paper. They repeated a past year Question I guess. LR section did not require any thougths.Rest explained. Some questions-what is meaning of Vouchsafe?( I think this was the question which was repeated)Synonym of sagacious?Bonus questions scenario- I had completed physics,Chen,Eng LR in about 1 hour 15 min.I had about 25 mins left for bonus questions.I guessed around 15–18 questions to unlock those 12.The bonus questions very easy wrt main paper barring maths which had some questions from jee advanced.I completed bonus questions in 7 mins.Thats when I had regrets.Had about 10 min with nothing to do.(Could have easily reviwed 3–4 questions from main paper)I failed miserably scored just 306(40 less than what I used to in Arihant mocks)(Not enough for any engineering course though).Edit:- I strongly felt that 3–4 questions were either wrong or the options were incorrect.P.S:- I had screwed jee mains too with a score of 181

Is it possible to clear the CAT exam with average knowledge in maths?

A2AIt depends on what you consider to be ‘average’. Sample these five actual questions from CAT 2017:Q1. Arun's present age in years is 40% of Barun's. In another few years, Arun's age will be half of Barun's. By what percentage will Barun's age increase during this period? If you are looking at it from purely a technical standpoint, you would have to doA = 0.4B(A + x) = 0.5(B + x)0.4B + x = 0.5B + 0.5xB = 5xSo, Barun’s age will increase by x over B or by 20%The same question you could have solved by considering values. Say Barun’s present age is 10 years. So, Arun would be 4 years old. Then you can simply jump and see what happens at the end of each year. In one year the ages will be 5 and 11, in two years they will be 6 and 12. So, 2 over 10 will again give you 20 percent.Q2. A man leaves his home and walks at a speed of 12 km per hour, reaching the railway station 10 minutes after the train had departed. If instead he had walked at a speed of 15 km per hour, he would have reached the station 10 minutes before the train's departure. The distance (in km) from his home to the railway station isThe technical solution would beLet the normal time be t hours. As the distance remains the same in each case,12(t + 1/6) = 15(t - 1/6)12t + 2 = 15t - 2.5t = 1.5 hours. Distance should be 12(1.5) + 2 = 20 km.Another way to think about it would have beenSpeed becomes 5/4 times the original speed. Time should become 4/5 times the original time as the distance is constant. So, the time should decrease by 1/5 times the original time. But the reduction is by 20 minutes. So, original time should be 100 minutes. Mind you that the original time in this case would be the time taken while traveling at 12 km/hr. So, the distance traveled would be 20 km.Q3. If a seller gives a discount of 15% on retail price, she still makes a profit of 2%. Which of the following ensures that she makes a profit of 20%?A) Give a discount of 5% on retail priceB) Give a discount of 2% on retail priceC) Increase the retail price by 2%D) Sell at retail priceTechnical solutionLet the cost price be x and the retail price be y0.85y = 1.02x OR 5y = 6xSo, if we need 1.2x on the RHS, we would need y on the LHS. That would be the retail price.Slightly unconventional way to look at itLet the cost price be 100. Selling price is 102. Retail price would have been 102/0.85 i.e. 120. So, if she sold it at the retail price, the profit would have been 20%.Q4. Suppose, C1, C2, C3, C4, and C5 are five companies. The profits made by C1, C2, and C3 are in the ratio 9 : 10 : 8 while the profits made by C2, C4, and C5 are in the ratio 18 : 19 : 20. If C5 has made a profit of Rs 19 crore more than C1, then the total profit (in Rs) made by all five companies isA) 438 croreB) 435 croreC) 348 croreD) 345 croreC2 is common to both cases. If we bring it to equivalence, we get C1 : C2 : C3 : C4 : C5 = 81 : 90 : 72 : 95 : 100. So, we can say that the absolute values are 81x, 90x, 72x, 95x and 100x respectively. According to the given condition, 19x = 19 crore. So, x = 1 crore and hence, the total profit will be 438 crore.A slightly difficult oneQ5. For how many integers n, will the inequality (n – 5) (n – 10) – 3(n – 2) ≤ 0 be satisfied?[math] n^2 - 15n + 50 - 3n + 6 =< 0 [/math][math] n^2 - 18n + 56 =< 0 [/math][math] (n - 14) (n - 4) =< 0 [/math]Now, even if you do not know the concept of inequalities, you can use a few integers and check it how it goes:n = 1, positiven = 2, positiven = 3, positiven = 4, zeron = 5, negativen = 6, negative and so on tilln = 14, zero and it will go positive post thatSo, 11 values in total. If you were able to understand the solutions in their entirety for these 5 questions, I won’t exactly say that you have an average understanding of mathematics that is relevant to the CAT. Considering that there were at least 20 questions in last year’s CAT equivalent to the level of the first four questions and another 5 odd that could have been solved using ‘smart’ techniques and reverse substitution it seems a lot less daunting. A score of 75 on 102 would have been equivalent to a 99 percentile. Sounds easy now?To be honest, it does not take a lot to crack quant considering that CAT has refrained from testing advanced math over the last many years now. If you have a basic idea of arithmetic, algebra and geometry, you can crack most of the questions in the test. You just have to be good at realizing the optimum method to crack a question and to switch between topics quickly. If you do not make a mess of the preceding two sections and do quant in a peaceful state of mind, you should not do that badly. Just make sure that you don’t try to mug up the question types and/or focus on having rigid ways of problem solving. If there is a solution given to a question in a mock, see if you can figure out something better. Discuss it with people who know a thing or two about quant and see if you are improving. 3 months is enough time to inculcate a good habit. So yes, someone with an average knowledge of maths can crack the QA section. You have to be relentless during preparation and extremely focused during the test so as to avoid any unforced errors under pressure.Hope that helps. All the best.
