PDF Editor FAQ

What do I do when the previous owner (of a horse) does not sign a bill of sale?

Hopefully you paid with checks or credit so you have proof of satisfying your end of the deal.then you can take them to small claims court. However if they are trying to return your money to you and refuse to sign there really is very little you can do unless you have a signed contract. Then you can take them to small claims court.it sounds as if the horse is already in your possession.Make sure to have someone video record how you spend your time with your horse. Grooming, feeding, training, riding, how the stall is kept etc over a period of days weeks. Sometimes the prior owner will lie and make claims of neglect or abuse. Also keep an eye or have someone keep an eye out for your horse, even to the point of putting a camera inside and outside of their stall.I lost a horse because an equine dentist put an unauthorized bit seat in my horses mouth and I refused to pay for it. A few days after my horse was poisoned and I had to have him put down.Couldnt prove it was the equine vet. Some people will do heartless things with livestock if they feel wronged especially over bill of sale disputes.Good luck with your horse.Sometimes it just takes a lawyer to threaten them with formal looking mail to get them to settle out of court.

I’ve found a 26 yo mare for adoption, her owner lost her job because of COVID but is willing to give some monthly money to help support said horse. She w/t/c and a little jumping and trail riding, is this a good idea? I only want some light riding.

I’ve skimmed through other answers, but would like to add a few things. The age of this horse is not necessarily an issue so long as you understand what this might entail. Several years ago, I bought a 24 year old quarter horse mare that became the gem of my barn. I love older horses. They have been there, done that. They don’t get overly excited about much. As long as you realize that, like others have said, you might be looking at more expensive veterinary care in the next few years and are able to adequately afford that care, I don’t see an issue. As far as what she does.. well, I wouldn’t jump her. Even over low stuff. I also would not be going for any long-winded trail rides. But some leisurely walk, trot, lope stuff around an arena or a leisurely trail ride is perfect. As long as you’re doing light riding and not asking anything too crazy I don’t see why this would be anything but beneficial to the horse. I love this age range for my lesson horses, and they are very well suited for that kind of thing. If you’ve never owned a senior horse before, do your research. Understand how their dietary needs change, figure out what your plan will be should her ability to properly chew diminishes, or she develops cushings, or if you find her ability to keep weight on in the winter is not quite up to snuff. Research, plan, and prepare if you’re seriously considering doing this. However, and I cannot stress this enough, you have to be able to afford everything with this horse yourself. You can in no way, shape or form expect the current owner to pay for anything. The horse world is chock-full of shady characters. And I have seen where folks have said “get everything in writing” and they’re right. Get it notarized. But understand this rarely holds up in court. It’s like folks who sell a horse with a buy-back contract. ( former owner gets first dibs to buy the animal back should the new owner decide to sell it). They never hold up in court. Not for your average horse people. Maybe if we were talking an extremely valuable horse and owners with enough money to be able to afford specialty equine lawyers. But for regular folks it just never shakes out. Contracts are good for things like leases, free leases and the like, but you can’t count on them when it comes to the transfer of possession and financial responsibilities. And verbal contracts are next to worthless. So if you can afford the entire care of the horse on your own without this current owner’s help, that’s fine. Just ensure you have some sort of bill of sale or documentation that ownership has been transferred to you, should she show up one day and want “her” horse back. Yes, it happens. So while you’re researching, planning and preparing, assume you will be solely responsible for any and all financial responsibility. Feed, feet, board if applicable, medical expenses, etc. If you cannot financially do this on your own, consider working out a lease or free-lease situation with the owner. And this is where you will want every singular little detail in writing and notarized.

Is it wrong to complain about not receiving any good pictures from an amateur photographer?

You got what you are paid for. That is sound like you paid for one of those pony ride photo at tourist spot than actual equine photo shoot.Shooting horse riding is very difficult, if you are looking for type of result that is shown on sports newspaper reporting The Kentucky Derby for $20, you will be disappointed 100% of time.Gear needed to shoot halfway decent photo cost more than $20 given how many hours or time it will take up preparing shoot, and very narrow time to execute actual shot. $20 probably barely cover gas money… and only place charge that cheap is one of those tourist trap place where costs are subside by other things.Any photographer halfway decent would charge lot more…If you are looking at quality of photo you seen on equine contest photo,Here is something like bare expense for photographer if you are looking for such result.Gas money + running cost of lens + running cost of camera body + type of monopod/tripod needed + post editing + meal + and his timeSo, how is likely going to break it down.Let say photographer is based in nearby town, so put it $10 for low ball gas estimate.I probably need either 300 f2.8 & 400 f2.8 at least, so write that cost down for weekend. That actually cost us around $550 if you rent those,Type of camera needed set you back for around $250 renting oneNow shoot for burst for 2 min… so let say you would get about 100 photo shooting JPEG burst. Of which, probably 4–5 will be useful. You edit those, let say entry level retoucher billed photographer $10 per photo for $50.Photographer need to bill at least 3–5 hours of his time considering trip and post work, so let say he charge $15/hr, so let say $45If its ranch demand photographer property release fee for professional photo shoot. let say lowball price of $100?Now how much is already? $1005 before tax? You live in high state tax place like California? and happened to live high tax city where sales tax is 9.5%?well jeez, here is another $95.48So, grand total of $1100.48 thank you very much. Oh, photographer only makes $45 before tax… what a rotten half day at work. Need to pay for insurance too from that. And not even covering income tax on business with that! Now, how much you were willing to pay me? $20? Your mail go to trash, and your phone number will be added to just another list of blocked phone number. Now let look at those who are specialized in genre so it will be more realistic scenario of quote you will get, since above is cost breakdown for those who do not do this type of shoot often. In the realistic scenario, lot of photographer barter with horse ranch and rider who modeled for photo. i.e obtaining release for promotions or other usage, or joining other packaged deal with rider, so cost can be spread across.Polo photo for example definitely budgeted in different way than typical cost break down. Those who playing polo are rich, and events are often sponsored by big business, so photographer are typically hired as the part of advertisement/promo project than just polo photo shoot for example. Also those who are specialized in equine sports photography typically have their gear already invested and depreciated in different schedule than typical commercial photographer who need to rent equipment or depreciated telephoto lens in different schedule. So, if you go to those specialized photographer, and you made deal with him/her, cost can drop to probably 1/4 to 1/3 of what is stated per sessions. So, when you go to those equine sports photographer and he/she quoted $300-400, they are actually quoting fairly reasonable rate. If you happened to shoot at one of their ranch using their horse, they probably even offer deeper discount, since set up is often already done before, thus it can go lower at $100–200 provided you paid for rent for horse, and pay for other fee since they will be more willing to make a money long run by selling riders membership etc. Also, Equestrian sports are expensive sports, and lot of money is already went into, and typically they want great photo with their horse often. And since they want to have good photo taken few times a year, photographer is often more than willing to give discount in many instance(some of friend doing equestrian sports are spending good amount of money on periodic photo session, so if I have such client nearby, I would definitely gives deep discount).Likewise, if you are publications or news organization who can promise constant work, he/she will be likely more than willing to do at those rate although photographer probably do not make money doing that, but instead choose to develop portfolio further while doing constant works. But, one time gig for $20 from craigslist? no that will not do. You will be lucky if you get student photographer who shows up with entry level DSLR with kits lens, while it is possible to shoot with that, chance of getting decent shot in 2min ride period is probably pretty low.
