Students who have been awarded a WISE scholarship previously cannot apply again.What can be funded?A research internship at a public or state-recognized higher education institution or a non-university research institute in Germany to work with doctoral students, scientists or professors as part of on-going research projects.Duration of the funding?2 to 3 months in the period between May and July. Get a template from your seniors or write your own cover letter.STEP 1: Getting an invitation from a German ProfessorMost important person in the entire process is the professor. Shortlist them on the basis of your interest, university etc... You can search for the best German universities online. Go through the profile of professor on his/her web page. Read about his/her papers, projects etc. Write him/her a mail and request him/her to offer you an internship. Attach a very precise resume.About the mail:Always address the professor by the last name with a proper title.For e.g. Dear Prof. Meyer, Respected Dr. Paul etcStart the mail by introducing yourself and your college. You can write about few major subjects you have studied/ lab techniques known. Mention about your research interest (you should get an idea about it after going through prof’s profile). You can also mention his/her current project that you are interested in. Clearly mention the dates of internship feasible to you (or at least duration). In the end, you can tell him that you will be applying for the DAAD scholarship.Best time to mail profs is Monday around 12-2 pm (Indian time), that’s 8-10 am in Germany. You can send mail to multiple profs. Try not to mail professors during weekend. Don’t write a generic mail. Don’t CC.You may not get a reply immediately, be patient, don’t freak out. I wasn’t able to send my application by 1st of November, so I contacted DAAD Delhi office and told them my problem. Book your Flight Tickets: Tickets generally gets very expensive so buy then ASAP. Turkish Airlines are generally cheapest. But cheap is always not a good option. Finances: DAAD will provide you the stipend once you reach Germany. You will have to open a bank account in there and send the information of your account to the address/fax-number given by DAAD. First instalment from DAAD will arrive in your account in about 7 days. So you must carry sufficient amount from India to stay there for 10-15 days on your own. Generally 200-300 euro will be enough but in case you need to pay security deposit or first month rent to your accommodation, 800-900 euro should be more than enough. To get the currency converted, you can contact any bank or private vendor.5. Socket Convertor: The Plug point in Germany is different from India. You can buy a universal travel adapter in INR 200-250.6. Food: If you eat fish and pork, you won’t have any problem. Pure vegetarians will have problem in finding food. Take some food along with you for first 1-2 days like Maggi, namkeen, laddu etc (Don’t keep any food stuff, spices etc in hand bag while boarding flight, everything will be removed when it is checked. Keep these things in baggage that will be kept in the luggage chamber). There will be a menza(mess) near your university. They generally have one veg dish. Few vegetarian things, one could get there are: breads, veg Pizza, garlic bread, yogurt, cake, fresh juice, packed food etc. You can browse several general stores to find some more new vegetarian food stuff. For cooking in Europe, flat heating plates are used instead of flames as in India. So, take vessels with flat bottoms for cooking. Other than spoons and plate, a frying pan was enough for me.7. Language: At your work place, language will be mostly English. Most of youth especially students know decent English but older people such as staff at hostels, general stores and other people generally know little or no English.8. Travelling places: This is the best opportunity to visit places in Europe. You could load words, like names or job-related terms, into the Newton’s dictionary so it would recognize them in the future.You could also adjust the speed of its recognition: The slower you set the recognizer, the more accurate it would be.You’d also improve accuracy if you set the device to recognize either printed characters or cursive writing, as opposed to both.And there’s letter-by-letter training for the Newton; each time you used this PDA, its letter recognition improved.The Newton was finally catching on to users’ curly Qs, but it wass still not truly practical for note taking.Instead, people used the “electronic ink” alternative (in which letters are simply saved as pictures).The Zoomer had similar limitations, but they were more severe.Its screen was dark and difficult to read, and its pen smaller than a crayon.The Zoomer attempted merely to convert hand-printed letters and numbers—not cursive writing—into neat digital characters.Even so, it suffered from the inaccuracy problems similar to the Newton’s, and it lacked the Newton’s training feature.The Zoomer could store handwritten notes as electronic ink, and could automatically shrink notes to fit neatly on the lines of its address or dote book.It had a minuscule pop-up keyboard as well, though it would try your patience.The Zoomer definitely held an edge in staying power.Its three AA-size batteries lasted up to 100 hours, while the Newton ran for about 35 hours on four AAA cells.For all the talk of PDAs as communication devices, the fact is neither the Newton nor the Zoomer came with even basic fax or data modem circuitry built in.You could connect external modems to each, and both had a PCMCIA card slot for adding modem or pager cards as they became available.These add-ons could be clumsy and costly, however, and were not always wireless.And you might find you needed that card slot for other purposes, such as adding memory or running programs.Nonetheless, communications gadgetry continued to come forth—the Newton’s new wireless messaging (pager) card and fax-and-data modem for cellular phone hookups were two of the earliest add-ons.In subtle but useful ways, the Newton seemed smarter than the Zoomer.The Assist button in the Newton, for instance, let you simply write “Fax Bob” in the Notepad, and the device automatically looked up Bob in your address book, got the fax number, and created a fax cover sheet.The Zoomer seemed more familiar to computer users, since it was based on the GeoWorks operating system not unlike the Windows or Macintosh interfaces—and included software for dialing up the America Online service.Odds were that the Newton would soon enjoy the critical advantage of a bountiful selection of software.Apple convinced scores of software publishers to develop programs for the Newton, ranging from arcade games to business expense trackers.Far fewer publishers appeared to be rallying around the Zoomer.But that, like the PDAs themselves, was subject to change.Early Newton MessagePad users experienced problems with the system’s handwriting recognition and incorrect timing in the clock.During the next few weeks, users posted their bug lists for the Apple Computer Inc. MessagePad on electronic boards such as Usenet and CompuServe.Although some users dismissed the problems as typical of early release software, those unfamiliar with computer software were less accepting.“It’s not something that Joe User is going to think, ‘Why don’t I just reset it?’”, said David Nanian, vice president of UnderWare Inc. (look at the way they chose names!!!). “They think of it as a VCR, and you don’t reset a VCR.”The most prevalent problem was that the handwriting recognition deteriorated, giving users garbled responses or freezing up entirely.“If you [write] in a word, it’ll come back all in consonants,” said Steve Silverman, senior software engineer at Teleware Inc., in Rockaway. NJ. “When you write a word, the screen goes dim for a second, then it comes back to full brightness and gives you this gobbledygook.”The unreadable text usually cleared up when users reset the device by pressing the reset button inside the battery compartment, which could incorrectly reset the clock.The reset clock would disturb any alarms and reminders that users had set.Apple technical support representatives acknowledged the problem through messages to MessagePad owners on CompuServe and on Usenet.The company said it expected to clear up the problem but did not offer a fix date. It told users to manually adjust the clock after resetting the MessagePad.Apple Computer Inc.’s follow-on to the Newton MessagePad, the Sweetpea PDA with CD-ROM, was delayed until the end of January to 1994. A larger cousin to the recently shipped Newton MessagePad, SweetPea included a larger LCD screen, a built-in CD-ROM drive, a PCMCIA slot, infrared connectivity, and a detachable keyboard.“It won’t have a hard drive, so it’s important that software developers put their applications on CD-ROM,” one source said. “Apple hasn’t been able to convince a lot of developers to go along.”Sweetpea never happened.By 1993,A new wave of personal computers was rolling in.Known variously as personal digital assistants (PDAs), personal communicators, personal intelligent communicators, and personal information processors, these hand-held machines combined pen input, handwriting recognition, personal organization tools, and state-of-the-art mobile communications in tidy packages.PC Magazine’s roundup in 1993 includes the first group of PDAs to hit the market: the Amstrad Pen Pad PDA600, Apple Newton MessagePad, AT & T EO 440 Personal Communicator, and Tandy Z-PDA/Casio Z-7000 Personal Digital Assistant (formerly Zoomer).A flood of handhelds appeared in the next 15 years, and the story isn’t over yet…
