So far as I can tell from the books, there are 44 named students (including Harry himself) at Hogwarts at the same time as him (not necessarily in his year).Of these, four (9%) are mentioned as being black (Dean Thomas, Lee Jordan, Angelina Johnson, Blaise Zabini), two (4.5%) as of South Asian descent (Padma and Parvati Patil), and one (2.25%) as of East Asian descent (Cho Chang). Some of the others are definitely white and some aren't described specifically (as a matter of interest, over 10% of the named students are Weasleys).If you look at the 2011 census data on ethnicity for UK residents of approximately Harry's age (based on evidence in the books on birthdate etc.) then the equivalent figures are roughly 5% black (including mixed), 8% South Asian origin (including mixed) and 1% Chinese origin (including mixed).So total numbers of students from ethnic minorities are about right but the books have the black/South Asian proportions the other way round from the actual proportions in the age-adjusted UK population. Why is that? We're dealing with a small sample size, so it may have no significance at all (this seems most likely, to be honest), or it could be that the proportion of black students was deliberately increased to increase appeal in the US market.
