PDF Editor FAQ

Is there any scientific evidence to suggest that acupuncture works?

Great question!Scientific evidence and a single individual’s answer to “What is the science behind acupuncture”; is a question that can and will be interpreted differently. Just as many will dispute the use or non-use of mammograms or the use of prostate examination and/or PSA test in the diagnosis in breast cancer and/or prostate cancer. Many individuals and scientists do feel as though complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) practice a form of pseudoscience. This belief is well founded due to SOME of the practices used in alterative care, however, this belief is usually due to ignorance or an unwavering determination of internal bias to CAM’s therapeutic approach and efficacy. It is hard to refute the evidence below but thankfully we still have skeptics that push researchers to their limits to show evidence for therapies used on the public! Scientific evidence for acupuncture can be found not just in the alternative therapy journals but also found in the Arch of Internal Medicine, British Journal of Anesthesiology, and the Cochrane Group Systematic Reviews. Before reading high quality scientific evidence of the use of acupuncture it may be important to dive into the controversial and the unknown of CAM education into Medical Universities across the US in the past decade. The American Medical Association (AMA) discusses CAM education into 50+ universities across the US and Canada. Here is a short list of some of the highest quality of evidence produced for acupuncture. If you would like to read more please feel free to read below the articles listed here.Acupuncture for Chronic Pain: Individual Patient Data Meta-analysis. Arch Intern Med. Sept 10, 2012, Online first - Vickers AJ, Cronin AM, Maschino AC, Lewith G, Macpherson H, Foster NE, Sherman KJ, Witt CM, Linde K● Background: Aimed to determine the effect size of acupuncture for 4 chronic conditions: Back & Neck pain, Osteoarthritis, Chronic HA, & Shoulder pain.● Methods: Systematic review RCTs of acupuncture for chronic pain. Of these RCTs individual patient data meta-analyses were conducted using data from 29-31 eligible RCTs, with a total of 17,922 patients analyzed.● Results: Acupuncture was superior to both sham and no-acupuncture control for each pain condition (P<.001 for all comparisons). After exclusion of RCTs that strongly favored acupuncture, the effect sizes were similar across pain conditions. Patients receiving acupuncture had less pain, with scores that were 95% CI across conditions.● Conclusion: Acupuncture is effective for the treatment of chronic pain and is therefore a reasonable referral option. Significant difference between true and sham acupuncture indicate that acupuncture is more than a placebo.Haake, Michael, “German Acupuncture Trials (GERAC) for Chronic Low Back Pain: Randomized, Multicenter, Blinded, Parallel-Group Trial with 3 Groups.” Archives of Internal Medicine 167, no. 17 (September 24, 2007): 1892–1898. doi:10.1001/archinte.167.17.1892.· Background: To our knowledge, verum acupuncture has never been directly compared with sham acupuncture and guideline-based conventional therapy in patients with chronic low back pain.· Methods: A patient- and observer-blinded randomized controlled trial conducted in Germany involving 340 outpatient practices, including 1162 patients aged 18 to 86 years (mean ± SD age, 50 ± 15 years) with a history of chronic low back pain for a mean of 8 years. Patients underwent ten 30-minute sessions, generally 2 sessions per week, of verum acupuncture (n = 387) according to principles of traditional Chinese medicine; sham acupuncture (n = 387) consisting of superficial needling at non-acupuncture points; or conventional therapy, a combination of drugs, physical therapy, and exercise (n = 388). Five additional sessions were offered to patients who had a partial response to treatment (10%-50% reduction in pain intensity). Primary outcome was response after 6 months, defined as 33% improvement or better on 3 pain-related items on the Von Korff Chronic Pain Grade Scale questionnaire or 12% improvement or better on the back-specific Hanover Functional Ability Questionnaire. Patients who were unblinded or had recourse to other than permitted concomitant therapies during follow-up were classified as nonresponders regardless of symptom improvement.· Results: At 6 months, response rate was 47.6% in the verum acupuncture group, 44.2% in the sham acupuncture group, and 27.4% in the conventional therapy group. Differences among groups were as follows: verum vs sham, 3.4% (95% confidence interval, −3.7% to 10.3%; P= .39); verum vs conventional therapy, 20.2% (95% confidence interval, 13.4% to 26.7%;P.001); and sham vs conventional therapy, 16.8% (95% confidence interval, 10.1% to 23.4%;P.001.· Conclusion: Low back pain improved after acupuncture treatment for at least 6 months. Effectiveness of acupuncture, either verum or sham, was almost twice that of conventional therapy.Acupuncture and related techniques for postoperative pain (POP): A systematic review of RCTs. British Journal of Anaesthesia 101 (2): 151-60, June 2008. Y. Sun, T. J. Gan, W Bubose, & A.S. Habib* Department of Anesthesiology Duke University Medical Center· Objective:This systematic review was to quantitative evaluate the efficacy of acupuncture and related techniques as adjunct analgesics for acute POP management.· Methods:Searched databases of Medline, CINAHL, Cochrane Central register of RCTs, & Scopus for RCTs Followed QUORUM guidelines in reporting this meta-analysis. 126 were screened, of which 111 were excluded. 15 studies met inclusion criteria comparing acupuncture with sham control. 1166 of whom 668 received acupuncture.· Results: Opioid reported side effectsNausea, vomiting, pruritus, dizziness, sedation, & urinary retention occurred significantly less in acupuncture group· Conclusions: Acupuncture is effective adjuncts for postoperative pain management with a significant reduction of postoperative pain scores and opioid consumptions. The opioid sparing effect was most marked at 72 hrs where a 29% reduction of morphine consumption. Pain intensity was reduction was moderate to low. Reduction of opioid related adverse effects is clinically meaningful.Commentary on the Cochrane Review of Stimulation of the wrist Acupuncture point P6 for preventing postoperative nausea and vomiting. The Cochrane CAM Field July/August 2011, Vol. 7, No. 4. Ting Bao MD, DABMA● Background: postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is common following surgery and anesthesia. This is an update of a Cochrane review published in 2004.● Objectives: To determine the efficacy and safety of P6 acupoint stimulation in preventing PONV.● Methods: Searched CENTRAL Cochrane library, Medline, EMBASE, ISI Web of Science, National library of Medicine publications on acupuncture.● Results: 40 RCTs 4,858 patients; Compared with sham treatment P6 stimulation significantly reduced nausea, vomiting, and the need for rescue antiemetic's. No difference between antiemetic's and P6 for PONV.● Conclusion: P6 acupuncture point stimulation prevented PONV.German RCT for chronic shoulder pain (GRASP), - A pragmatic, controlled, patient-blinded, multi-centre trial in an outpatient care environment. Pain 151 2010 146-154. A. F. Molsberger, T. Schneiderm H. Gothardt ,A. Darbik• Background: (GRASP) for chronic shoulder pain (CSP), goals tested pain reduction with Chinese medicine acupuncture 3 months and directly after treatment in comparison to sham acupuncture and conventional orthopedic treatment in 31 orthopedic centers for outpatient care in Germany. CSP was grouped into rotator cuff disorders including tendonitis and bursitis, by adhesive capsulitis and by OA of the GH joint.• Methods: (GRASP) compromised 424 outpatients. with chronic shoulder pain (CSP) >6 weeks and average pain VAS 50mm, who were randomly assigned to receive Chinese acupuncture (verum), sham acupuncture or conventional conservative orthopedic treatment (COT). The patients were blinded to the type of acupuncture and treated by 31 office based orthopedists trained in acupuncture; all received treatments over 6 weeks. Verum (Chinese acupuncture) - 154 patients 15 treatments, 20 mins 1-3 X per week. Sham - 135 patients 15 treatments, 20 mins 1-3 X per week. COT- 135 patients with conventional orthopedic therapy with 50mg diclofenac daily, 15 treatments were individually selected from physiotherapy, physical exercise, heat or cold therapy, ultra-sonic treatment and TENS.• Results: Descriptive statistics showed greater improvement of shoulder mobility (ABD and arm above head test) for the verum group vs the COT immediately after treatment and after 3 months.• This trial indicates that Chinese acupuncture is an effective alternative to conventional orthopedic treatment for CSP.• Conclusion: (GRASP) shows that a course of 15 acupuncture treatments more effectively reduces pain and improves mobility in patients with chronic should pain then does standard therapy using NSAIDs and physiotherapy. This trial indicates that Chinese acupuncture is an effective alternative to conventional orthopedic treatment for CSP. Therapeutic effect can be observed immediately after the end of treatment and for a period of up to 3 months, with the difference between acupuncture and standard therapy increasing over this time. Our results suggest that verum acupuncture is superior to sham acupuncture. With 424 patients treated in this trial has a high external validity, and shows that acupuncture can be effectively integrated into the medical setting of an outpatient care environment.Interesting Scientific Correlations in Acupuncture and human physiology:· Doucher et al Myofasical reffered pain data from the Trigger Point Manual provide independent physiologic evidence of acupuncture meridians (trajectories described more than 2000 yrs ago)· Doucher & Fleckenstien et al Clinical correspondences in treating pain and somatovisceral disorders reports93.3 % anatomic comparisons of myofascial trigger points (mTrPs) to those of classical acupuncture points94% have similar regional pain indications, 3% of referred pain82% have definite correspondences of somatovisceral effects & 11% probableLangevin et al correlations of fibroblastic activity with “de Qi” sensation (with proper needling) – may stimulate healing effects to soft tissues as well as an immunological effect of acupuncture.80% of acupuncture points are within myofascial planesHarvard Medical – the effect of acupuncture on the brain (fMRI) showed sensations constituting “de Qi” are associated with decreased brain activity in the limbic-paralimbic & neocortical network and in the default mode network.Safety of Acupuncture:● Witt el al: of 229,230 patients with an average of 10 acupuncture treatments (<2 million treatments)– 19,726 patients (8.6%) reported experiencing at least 1 adverse effect– 4,963 (2.2%) requiring 1 treatment– Most common adverse effect● 6.1% Local Hematoma (58% of all adverse effects)● 1.7% Pain● 0.7% 1 patient with pneumothorax (1 out of every million patient) (15)Morbidity of acupuncture vs other treatments● NSAIDS – 1-4% per year of serious gastro-intestinal tract complications (53)● Axial spine injections have a 1-2% risk of infection– More serious infections are 1/1000-1/10,000 procedures– Epidural injections serious hematomas in 1/4000-1/10,000● Dural tears 1/200 epidural proceduresThe science of acupuncture has grown significantly since the early 2000’s!As you know science can be interpreted as "knowledge" of a subject but it is also a systematic process of testable inquires to accept or not accept at testable hypothesis and/or null-hypothesis. Science behind acupuncture could be looking at the mechanism and/or the theories behind proposed mechanisms as well as the diagnostic approach of an Acupuncturist and/or traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) provider. The question above is very general to answer due to the fact that acupuncture may attempt to treat many things. A basic rule for an evidence-based practitioner or an Acupuncturist is to look at the evidence in question; whether this is, how well does acupuncture work for allergies or low back pain compared to conventional treatment or what physiological effects can acupuncture have on the body. The science and art of a tradition Chinese medicine (TCM) practitioner and/or acupuncturist is based upon a diagnostic work up that entails thousands of years of patient observation and pattern differential diagnosis. This past empirical evidence of treatment management based on Zheng a.k.a. pattern diagnosis is now being studied with omics (genomics, proteomics or metabolomics) and bioinformatics that have recently stemmed new research into western and eastern diagnosis similarities and advanced TCM/Acupuncture research.

I am depressed, shy, and alone. I am going through issues but I have no one to talk to. What should I do?

I’m not a psychotherapist, I only know what I have experienced and what I have learned from reviewing the literature, and my own experience with Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome has not been that dramatic. Apparently there is a common pattern of a rapid decline then gradual return to homeostasis. And PTSD seems to have some common elements with depression. While some require medication (which is a medical decision most individuals may be incapable of making, and termination of medication must be done in consultation with a physician), examination of all available clinical research reports indicates that “antidepressants are not much better than placebos - dummy pills with no active ingredients in them at all. But that was only part of the story. Many of the studies sponsored by the drug companies were never published at all. They had been withheld from the public and even from the doctors who prescribe these medications” [Irving Kirsch (2009). The Emperor’s New Drugs: Exploding the Antidepressant Myth]. The“APA urges psychotherapy as depression treatment before pills”http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-504763_162-57519422-10391704/american-psychological-association-urges-psychotherapy-as-depression-treatment-before-pills/Just be aware that counselors/therapists don't cure you, they can only suggest ways of thinking that have helped others in this situation. Although, there are instances when professional psychotherapy is necessary. My point is that the person must be responsible for themselves, to include recognizing when they need professional assistance. Neurosis is not necessarily a mental disorder that requires psychoanalysis, although self-absorption may be a sign of depression. Moreover, cognitive behavioral therapy attempts to change behavior (habit), and not necessarily define causation.Behavior comes down to habit, change your habits to change yourself. Thinking positively about one’s self and doing what needs to be done (particularly when it is hard to do) can go a long way, and thinking positive thoughts is more effective than trying to suppress negative thoughts. It has been proven that even fake laughter triggers a biochemical reaction in the brain that positively alters one’s perspective. Moreover, we choose our attitude. “In three studies, clinically depressed participants were more likely than nondepressed participants to use emotion-regulation strategies in a direction that was likely to maintain or increase their level of sadness” (Millgram, Y., Joormann, J., Huppert, J. D., & Maya, T. (2015, August). Sad as a matter of choice? Emotion-regulation goals in depression. Psychological Science, 26 (8). 1216-1228. Retrieved from: http://pss.sagepub.com/content/26/8/1216?etoc ).The Havening Technic is a therapy for treating anxiety resulting in physiological and psychological symptoms. Phobias, panic attacks, and traumatic memories exist due to neural connections within the brain. Replacing or weakening those connections can ease the distress they cause.1. Keeping the eyes closed, recall all details of the distressing situation and rate the distress that the memory causes (scale of 0 to 10).2. A counselor or trusted person applies a comforting touch (stroking the forehead, the arms from shoulder to elbow, and rubbing palms.3. With eyes closed, simultaneously distract yourself by mentally climbing a staircase with 20 steps, counting the steps aloud; while imagining that the distress is diminishing with each step.At 20, hum two rounds of “Row, Row, Row Your Boat” or another neutral song. Open the eyes, look right and left, and inhale and exhale deeply. If perceived distress is still high, repeat using different visualizations and tunes) until the distress level is zero or remains the same for two rounds. The premise is that distraction displaces the recalled traumatic memory, preventing it from activating the amygdala; while the touch therapy produces brain waves that weaken the neural connections that evoke distress.Reference: Bottom Line Personal. He is author of Havening Techniques: A Primer and When the Past Is Always Present: Emotional Traumatization, Causes and Cures. Havening.orgPsych research in happiness indicates that achieving a goal seldom results in sustained happiness, wealth has a low correlation with happiness (at least in a wealthy democracy), and even health has a low impact on happiness. While there is empirical evidence that depressed people are more realistic, research also indicates that hope and optimism are key to happiness in life, and that genuine pride in success/accomplishments can evoke happiness.Dissatisfaction with life results from dwelling on past negative events, and insufficient appreciation and savoring of past positive events.See: Seligman, “Authentic Happiness: Using the New Positive Psychology to Realize Your Potential for Lasting Fulfillment;” there are several questionnaires atAuthentic Happiness. Page on doi.orgHappy people DON’T: Blame others for their problems; overreact to present situations; use negative language; feel trapped (they explore options); have a single-minded focus on people or passions; dwell on past failure; hang-out with unhappy people; gossip; or, procrastinate. (Dan Baker, PhD, former Director, National Center for Preventive and Stress Medicine)Meditation has been proven to reduce stress. “A Johns Hopkins University of research suggests that about 30 minutes of meditation daily may improve symptoms of anxiety and depression, without medication.” (http://www.science20.com/news_articles/mindfulness_meditation_helps_mild_anxiety_and_depression_finds_review-127250?utm_source=Newsletter+1%2F8%2F2014&utm_campaign=ConstantContact&utm_medium=email)Guided imagery is a common technique in improving athletic performance and in cancer treatment, among other things. It involves mentally picturing a specific image or goal and imagining oneself achieving that goal. Those with cancer are taught to imagine their bodies fighting cancer cells and athletes are taught to see themselves executing their stressful behavior with proper form. In any case, one could imagine the creation of new neural connections and weakening of old neural connections. Guided imagery: http://www.healthjourneys.com/free_audio.aspIn changing one’s behavior, there is a possibility of not get it right at the beginning, only practice can bring about the results desired. And, this practice is necessary to implant the proper neurological connections in the brain that make the subconscious programming possible. So, relax and be yourself, allow yourself to make errors (because you will), then learn from the mistakes. See: “Incognito: The Secret Lives of the Brain,” by Dr David Eagleman, who directs the Laboratory for Perception and Action and the Initiative on Neuroscience and Law, Baylor College of Medicine. Also, the claims in this TED Talk (“fake it until you make it”) have been disputed, but a positive approach is consistent with positive results (Self-fulfilling Prophesy psych concept): http://www.ted.com/talks/amy_cuddy_your_body_language_shapes_who_you_are.html.All mental processes are electro-bio-chemical in nature; there is empirical evidence confirming that artificial laughter alters the brain chemistry in a positive way. The American Journal of Physiology (Sep 2011) explained how exercise improves memory, treats depression, and makes people feel better. And, one should not underestimate the effects of proper diet (minimal sugar, avoid processed and refined foods; seek out whole grains, fruits and vegetables, seeds and nuts), avoiding drugs (legal and illegal) and alcohol, and adequate sleep (consistent each day and preferably more than 7 hours), which are essential for optimal physical and mental functioning. And ADHD is also treated in this way. Also, self-absorption can be associated with some level of depression. Also recognize that this type of behavior may progress to deviance. You may not be able to foresee it at this point, but as time passes, the small steps (that are almost imperceptible at the time) add up to major changes that did not seem possible in the beginning.Foods to Avoid If You Have Anxiety or Depression: Fruit juice, soda (diet & regular), white bread, artificial sweeteners, sugar (foods with sugar: ketchup; caffeine (coffee, energy drinks, etc.); alcohol; trans fats/partially hydrogenated oils; processed foods (processed meat, fried food, refined cereals, candy, pastries, and high-fat dairy products); white flour. Shaw once asked the explorer Stanley: ‘If you were injured and unable to lead the party, how many people in the group could take over from you?’ and Stanley replied without hesitation: ‘Five percent — one in twenty.’ This applies to all animals, birds and fishes. But there is in any large group a very small proportion of ‘king rats,’ individuals of such high dominance that they dominate even the dominant. These are the Napoleons and Hitlers. Beethoven and Wagner were ‘king rats.’ But they were fortunate because they were king rats who had found a way of expressing their dominance in a socially acceptable manner. I find it amusing that I’ve so often had my blackness questioned; I’m unusually high in genetic material that is completely absent from pure Africans even two sets of CCR5 Delta- 32 and high-level strength, endurance, power and stamina along with extraordinary reflexes, coordination and agility, even the famed Caucasian ability for administrative capacity.Strength Training: (Men in lbs.): (Bench Press: 448), (Deadlift: 652), (Squat: 583), (Shoulder Press: 304), (Barbell Curl: 244), (Bent Over Row: 393), (Power Clean: 380)Athletic Prowess: (Men in min:secs): (1-Mile (running): <4:30), (100-meter (swim): <11.0)(Hormonal Profile) Serum T-Levels: Very High relative to general population (No hair loss – Full head of hair bordering on Caucasoid richness), Serum T-Level: 1000 ng/DL, Pre-Natal T-Dosage: Very High relative to general population, this greatly improves his athletic performance, aggressiveness, and physical appearance - prosocial high-T men; extremely high social dominance with dominant, aggressive, or antisocial actors; self-reports of diverse antisocial behaviors, including childhood truancy, trouble as an adult on the job and with the law, marital disruption, drug and alcohol abuse, violent behavior, and military AWOL -- mostly indicators of rebelliousness and assertive norm breaking, he’s hypomanic with slight bi-polar tendencies but ultimately the strong, silent type; one of those archetypal kinds of men women are said to swoon for. He takes life rather seriously and use their inner logic to discern the best ways of navigating it. They may, for instance, use Ti to work out their own personal methods for maximizing performance in a particular sport. They love using their Ti to solve practical problems or to optimize functioning. Because of their independence, self-directedness, and competitiveness, ISTPs may excel at nearly anything they set their mind to.Extraverted Intuition (Ne), has been fully awakened, they display an insatiable appetite for ideation and theorizing. Extraverted Intuition propels ENTPs to constantly form associations between ... whatever. To understand how an ENTP sees the world I gladly refer to a scene in Warren Ellis' excellent graphic novel Planetary, where we see through the eyes of the character known as "The Drummer" for a moment: he wonders what temperature water is, how it is connected to the environment, what it means to this, to that, etc. Of all types, he is one of those most concerned with the “big picture.” This can be understood in terms of their Ni, which is the most abstract and forward-looking of all functions. Ni is comprehensive and holistic. Its visions, answers, and insights manifest as comprehensive wholes. Consequently, INJs often feel more like recipients than they do creators of their ingenious ideas. Many enjoy exploring unifying theories and metaphysical truths that explain the underlying nature of things. Toward this end, they may devour stacks of books on philosophy, religion, psychology, evolutionary theory, and the like. But since Ne is extraverted and expansive, INTPs must explore a breadth of ideas before they feel confident about who they are and what they believe. Thus, INTPs may find it easier to identify what they don’t believe than what they do believe. He is a nihilistic cynic, worried that he may never find absolute truth. He takes great pleasure in perceiving both beauty (physical or otherwise) and sensory novelty. Their penchant for sensory novelty is why SPs are commonly described as thrill-seekers or hedonists. Introverted Sensing types are conservative with respect to the past. They prefer the “tried and true, though less attached to past experiences by merit of such alone and generally seem to have a broader palate, are more apt to like something the first time around. In this sense, Si (or Ne) types are often described as resourceful. Se and Ni types, by contrast, would be more apt to go out and buy whatever they think they need without giving it a second thought. Their first instinct toward the material world is not to conserve, but to consume. Intuitives are not inclined to readily impose rules or agendas on themselves. Their natural inclination is to start the day in a leisurely, open, and receptive manner (this is even true of IJs). Extraverts as having a relatively limited attention span, moving from here to there with little sustained focus on any one thing. Their interactions are often viewed as more superficial, opting for breadth rather than depth. Assuming they are not being heavily influenced by their inferior function (Si), which pushes for a more static or traditional worldview, ENPs tend to prefer more fluid ways of processing and understanding things. Because of their reluctance to endorse static concepts, ENTPs and ENFPs are often drawn to historical and contextual studies. Historical studies allow ENPs to explore ideas more broadly and fluidly. Rather than working with static concepts or focusing on linear causation, ENPs prefer to examine contextual factors and contingencies that influence the nature and trajectory of ideas. Many philosophers of history, such as Nietzsche, aptly embody this more open-ended, contextual approach to knowledge. Using his "gift," Marcus has no problem with being slightly manipulative, frequently lying to others about who he is or telling people what they want to hear based off of his observations of them. This often leads to trouble, especially when his ruse is found out. Paradoxically, he is cautious of relatively harmless 'phenomena' - such as ghosts for which he cannot defend himself. His eye for detail, outside-the-box thinking, and throw-caution-to-the-wind-to-follow-a-hunch attitude make him excellent at following and solving cases. Something profoundly convulsive…suddenly becomes visible and audible with indescribable definiteness and exactness…There is an ecstasy whose terrific tension is sometimes released by a flood of tears…There is a feeling that one is utterly out of hand…Everything occurs without volition, as if an eruption of freedom, independence, power, and divinity. The spontaneity of the images and similes is most remarkable; one loses all perception of what is imagery and simile; everything offers itself as the most immediate, exact, and simple means of expression. The powerful means by which Introverted Intuition reveals its solution are associated with a gut sense of conviction and certainty. He tends to “know” at a deep intuitive level that it is correct. But they cannot stop there. Once they have received the intuition, they must work to flesh it out. They must articulate and illustrate it in order to render it accessible and useful to others. To the rational mind, two contradictory assertions cannot simultaneously coexist; one of the them must be rendered false. But according to Jung, the unconscious, through it’s innate creativity, is adept at reconciling opposites and transcending paradoxes. He is a champion of paradoxical or Janusian thinking. In our discussions of philosophy, she has sought to transcend traditional categorizations and dichotomies by claiming that knowledge is at once relative and absolute, subjective and objective, temporal and eternal, etc. Again, to the rational mind, which relishes and even relies on such dichotomies, this can be difficult to swallow. When handled via the tools of Ni, however, paradoxes may become more readily comprehensible. They ignore any kind of moral code; everything is about cause and effect and experimentation. They may even toy with people just to see what happens; using them like tools or objects to use and cast aside. They are harsh with their words, caring little about their affect on others. They don’t care what anyone else does with their lives as long as they are left to their own devices. Revelling in his intellect, he is haughty, careless, and so absorbed in their own world and ideas that they ignore and neglect the people in their care. They look down on “the mass” for being less intellectual or “enlightened” than they are. They avoid responsibilities and ignore loved ones, drifting into their own isolated world.Extraverted Sensing (Se), While his introverted Sensing can attune to immediate inner sensations (a role that, by the way, is commonly overlooked), less attached to past experiences he generally seems to have a broader palate, are more apt to like something the first time around. He prefer that extraverted sensations remain within a familiar bandwidth. Novel or extreme external sensations can even seem intrusive to him at times. When he is in need of something new, they often prefer to use Ne to cleverly fashion a makeshift solution from existing resources rather than running out to buy something premade. In this sense, Si (or Ne) types are often described as resourceful.Extraverted Feeling (Fe), He can be quirky, witty, and engaging. Since INTPs extravert Intuition (Ne) and Feeling (Fe), they can have a certain charm, approachability, and congeniality about them. He can turn on at will a fount of irresistible, immersing, spuriously empathic. More specifically, it is focused on navigating and managing the FP’s personal feelings, tastes, and values. Rather than distributing its feelings and energies across a breadth of individuals (as Fe does), Fi concentrates its gaze on the self or the “subject.” This is why it is often described as “subjective.” To him, other's Fe expressions can seem generic, predictable, shallow, fake, or contrived. They are naturally more concerned with experiencing the world than they are with structuring or controlling it. And as Extraverts, the outside world serves as their primary source of stimulation. This makes ESTPs the most action-oriented and task-oriented of all types. Without a task or something novel to experience, they can quickly become bored and restless. With adequate stimulation, ESTPs act and respond quickly, making things happen and getting things accomplished. They are “doers,” men and women of action.Marcus, despite being arrogant and self-centred at times, can be a charming fellow.Just like Gregory House and Skulduggery, who is even worse, they have a charming side, that can sense exactly what a person needs and respond to that, he can be open-minded and open-hearted, he is one of the greatest physiological psychologists that has ever lived. Nietzsche's work is first a study of the human condition. He observes how men have used concepts and how they react to the concepts they use. In essence he studies and exposes the use of the lie—the metaphysics of meaning. He concludes that error more than truth has served man; this brings him to a temporary nihilistic "conclusion." His position is that man creates meaning and this desire to create meaning is the intrinsic quality which allows man to overcome himself. However, this desire to overcome oneself is not simply a choice, but a "necessity." Nietzsche's methods are brilliant and to understand his ideas fully you must live them. Thus, Nietzsche cannot be studied successfully. In order to understand Nietzsche you must first apply his methods to yourself. He displays great kineasthetic intelligence, athletic and mechanically-inclined, endowed with ample dexterity and hand-eye coordination. In contrast to his preponderance of mental energy, the ESTP exudes great physical energy. ENTPs use Ne to explore new ideas or hypotheticals. He employs their bodies and senses to explore and manipulate the physical world (Se). Their curiosity about the world, including its potential role in clarifying their identity, can inspire him to travel or adopt a peripatetic lifestyle. They may, for instance, choose to explore other cultures, live out of a vehicle, or take to the woods. As long as these sorts of explorations feel stimulating and life-giving, he will continue to explore them, even amid pressures to embrace a more conventional path. This, combined with their strong idealism, can engender a sort of “grass is greener” mentality can lead to aimless dilettantism. Curious and restless, they enjoy entertaining new ideas and possibilities. He brings an experimental attitude to life as they explore a variety of ideas, lifestyles, and experiences. In each new experience, he sees an opportunity to not only learn about the world, but about themselves and their life’s purpose.Like Thoreau and McCandless, INFPs seek a life of passion and intensity. They want to know what it means to be fully alive and how they might cultivate a rich and abundant life. They gravitate toward experiences that arouse or intensify feelings of passion, inspiration, or meaning. They may turn to relationships, novels, poetry, music, travel, or activism to achieve their desired level of intensity. He can quickly feel restless and dissatisfied when the passion or intrigue wanes. His seeking impetus is informed and perpetuated by their critical observations of society and culture. They often see themselves as characteristically different from, or at odds with, their surrounding culture, sometimes feeling like outsiders or misfits. They can be wary of “conventional wisdom” and societal prescriptions, preferring instead to forge their own unique path. Amassing wealth or material goods is rarely high on his priority list. Money is valued only to the extent that it furnishes the time and freedom to explore their deepest passions. Openness reflects the tendency toward engagement with aesthetic and sensory information (in both perception, apophenia and imagination), whereas intellect reflects the tendency toward engagement with abstract and intellectual information. There is evidence that reduced latent inhibition is associated with both openness/intellect and creative achievement in high-functioning individuals (Carson et al. 2003; Peterson, Smith, & Carson 2002). Reduced latent inhibition may allow high-functioning individuals to consider more stimuli as potentially relevant, thus allowing for the novel and original associations important for creativity.“My inner values and feelings (Fi) are like a building, a structure of affections that inform my worldview. This involves an inner love for certain things, and an inner repulsion for other things. My values and feelings form “blocks” of varying hardness, depending on how strongly I feel about them; the stronger ones are more resilient…I constantly discover more about the ambivalence of the structure as I go, and what I should change to make it better, my haughty Nietzschean elitism, chilling narcissism, my Burckhardt/Hume social consciousness and my exhausting maximalism.”Hare PCL-R - 35/40: Psychopathy, as assessed by the Hare Psychopathy Checklist, is comprised of 20 items that typify the affective, impulsive, and antisocial symptoms of the condition. Each of the items is scored on a three-point scale. A “0” indicates that the trait does not characterize the individual, a “1” indicates that the trait describes the individual in some areas, and a “2” indicates that the trait is present in all aspects of the individual’s life. A score of 25 is clinical in Britain whereas a score of 30 is necessary in the United States. Temperamental Narcopathy with a sadistic bent. It shares probably more then 90% of traits with the general case of psychopathic personality. Like in all such cases the true character is carefully and skillfully disguised behind an image he/she wants to project. They typically have better impulse control, a high IQ, a sadistic motivation, and heightened empathy (the Ted Bundy or, if you like, Hannibal Lecter type). In fact, within the framework of clinical psychology, a narcopath is a highly dominant 'king rat' person, someone with an antisocial and asocial personality disorder, especially one manifested in aggressive, perverted, criminal, or amoral behavior characterized by a distinct cluster of personality traits, including ruthlessness, fearlessness, self-confidence, charm, charisma, impulsivity, persuasiveness, mental toughness, and a lack of conscience and empathy.Glib and superficial charm 2, Grandiosity and (exaggeratedly high) arrogance/narcissism 2, Need for stimulation 2, Pathological lying 1, Cunning and manipulativeness 2, Lack of remorse or guilt 2, Shallow affect (superficial emotional responsiveness) 1, Callousness 2, Parasitic lifestyle 2, Poor behavioral controls 1, Sexual promiscuity 2, Early behavior problems 2, Lack of realistic long-term goals 1, Impulsivity 2 (thrill-seeking), Irresponsibility 2, Failure to accept responsibility for own actions 1, Many short-term marital relationships 2, Juvenile delinquency 2, Revocation of conditional release 2 (a Criminal Competency score of 9/10), Criminal versatility 2.NPI - Narcissistic Personality Index (NPI for short) – 40/40.Temperamental Narcopathy with a sadistic bent. Those who had better impulse control, high IQ, a sadistic motivation, and heightened empathy (the Ted Bundy or, if you like, Hannibal Lecter type). In fact, within the framework of clinical psychology, a narcopath is a highly dominant 'king rat' person, someone with an antisocial and asocial personality disorder, especially one manifested in aggressive, perverted, criminal, or amoral behavior characterized by a distinct cluster of personality traits, including ruthlessness, fearlessness, self-confidence, charm, charisma, impulsivity, persuasiveness, mental toughness, and a lack of conscience and empathy. The psychopath is a rebel, a religious disobeyer of prevailing codes and standards a rebel without a cause, an agitator without a slogan, a revolutionary without a program; in other words, his rebelliousness is aimed to achieve goals satisfactory to him alone; he is incapable of exertions for the sake of others. All his efforts, under no matter what guise, represent investments designed to satisfy his immediate wishes and desires. They are brash, cocky, diabolically independent, arrogant, egotistical and incredibly narcissistic. He is a "magician" because he works his own will to achieve his own ends; he is "toxick" because destruction is his goals. He is not afraid to be deliberately malicious and malevolent. From society's standpoint he is the worst of the psychopaths because he does his Work intentionally. As such, he stands apart from their definitions-definitions which would like to emphasize the inability of the psychopath to control himself. The Toxick Magician is conscious of his actions and of his feelings. This makes him especially dangerous. The picture of the human condition and the Toxick Magician's means and methods for manipulating it to his ends may not sound romantic to many. Except, of course, to the Toxick Magician, whose sole purpose is to explore, exploit and control the conditions of life.Pathological narcissism is a life-long pattern of traits and behaviours which signify infatuation and obsession with one's self to the exclusion of all others and the egotistic and ruthless pursuit of one's gratification, dominance, primacy and ambition, there exist only negative emotions, all of which are primarily concerned with personal ambition and the will to power. The most salient traits and characteristics of this type are natural deviousness, facile social intuitions, amorality presented as moral flexibility, pathological anger and envy rationalized as altruism or logic in order to co-opt others, all-encompassing greed, assumption of personal superiority over all others, a dictatorial and bullying attitude alternating on power and authority and intelligence, suspicion and lack of trust to a paranoid degree, an egocentric conviction that they are always right. These traits and characteristics are most likely to surface unwittingly when the psychopath is contradicted, frustrated or blocked. The psychopath, as Harrington defines him, is the “new man”: a psychological superhero free from the shackles of anxiety and remorse. He is brutal, bored, and adventurous. But also, when the situation demands it, beatific. He was always anxious to live so far beyond his means. It was always “Nothing but the best,” the best place and among the very best first-class people, prominent people, people well known, so far as position, genes and wealth were concerned. That was his great object—always to be among them and to live at the most expensive places and to have the best accommodations; he was not satisfied to live in plain style anywhere and he loved the lifestyles promoted on Instagram.MACH-IV – Machiavellian Test – 20/20He is a “ High Mach” as related to cold selfishness and pure instrumentality, a cynicism about human nature, and a detachment from social norms and values, and those high on the trait were assumed to pursue their motives (e.g. sex, achievement, sociality) in duplicitous ways. More recent research on the motivations of high Machs compared to low Machs found that they gave high priority to money, power, and competition and relatively low priority to community building, and family concerns. High Machs admitted to focusing on unmitigated achievement and winning at any cost. They are great at exploiting others via latitude of improvisation, and ambiguity whilst being immune to control and social influence. Machiavellianism, I’m also tempted to ascribe to most of humanity but it’s not conscious but done as a manifestation of genuine character beneath conscious and thus amorphous to most, but as with the previous trait, I might be projecting. Machiavellianism is acting in a way that views the world as a power struggle, thus every interaction, even with close friends, is a business deal – how much do I get out of it and how does this person have power over me, or vice versa?PPI - The Psychopathic Personality Inventory (PPI for short)These eight independent satellite states of the psychopathic personality—Machiavellian Egocentricity (ME) – Henry VIII with Messianic Fantasies; Impulsive Nonconformity (IN); Blame Externalization (BE); Carefree Nonplanfulness (CN); Fearlessness (F); Social Potency (SOP); Stress Immunity (STI); and Cold-heartedness (C)—divide and re-form along two superordinate axes of his personality. We know that people with psychopathic traits function perfectly well on the ‘outside’—and that some of them are extremely successful. Ruthlessness, mental toughness, charisma, focus, persuasiveness, and coolness under pressure are qualities, so to speak, that separate the men from the boys, pretty much across the board. Marcus is the elite, high-functioning counterpart, as he optimises schizophrenia, (the link between schizotypy and creativity is well established).Another critical problem is that of monitoring one’s own conditioning. According to Eysenck dysthymic (despondent) patients and normal introverts are characterized by the quick and strong formation of conditioned responses, while normal extraverts are characterized by the weak and slow formation of conditioned responses. Thus the deviation in either direction may prove disastrous. And this is oversimplified; our problem will be to screen endless categories of conditioning reactions and optimize the rate and degree of each. There are some things that we want to learn thoroughly, in a single lesson mathematical theorems and tables of basic information, how to walk without stumbling in the reduced gravity of the moon, how to recognize poison mushrooms, etc. Then there are other things that we want to learn only through thick (but not impassable) barriers of suspicion-that our value systems are wrong, that a friend is stabbing us in the back, that we are deviating from our own parsimoneity or being pulled into the negative social situation where another exploits or subordinates us, or that it is necessary to betray a commitment, for example. Marcus is such a strong condition for his desires that strong aversions to anything save for that which disgusts him occurs which is under scientific/objective causality, he learns parsimoniousness and instrumentality, making minimal hypotheses and conscious of all that “weighty” stuff that forms character in others.1. Self-Centered Impulsivity (ME + IN + CN + C + BE) – Moderate2. Fearless Dominance (SOP + F + STI + ME + IN + C) - Full ScoreOn one of the standard psychopathy assessment questionnaires, the Levenson Self-Report Scale, a typical test item reads as follows: “Success is based on survival of the fittest. I am not concerned about the losers.”, “ I let others worry about higher morals; my main concern is with the bottom line.” and “ For me, what’s right is whatever I can get away with.” On a scale of 1 to 4, where 1 represents “strongly disagree” and 4 represents “strongly agree,” rate how you feel about this statement. Most psychopaths are inclined to register strong agreement with such a sentiment—which is not, incidentally, always a bad thing.OCEAN: Openness/Intellect: (Fantasy (5.0), Intellectual Depth (5.0), Imagination (5.0), Intellectual Engagement (5.0), Mental Quickness (5.0), Need for Cognition (5.0), Psych Experiences/Spirituality (5.0), Intellectual Creativity (5.0), Apophenia (5.0), Permissive Attitudes (3.9), Attention to Detail (5.0), Inquisitiveness (5.0), Experience-Seeking (5.0), Task-Involvement (4.7), Aesthetics (5.0), Feelings (1.8), Actions (4.3), Ideas (5.0), Values (4.9), Diffuse identity (5.0), Self-sufficient/Isolated (5.0), Byronic/Complexity (5.0), Social Rebelliousness (5.0), Conscientiousness: (Competence (5.0), Efficiency (4.2), Self-Efficacy (5.0), Perfectionism (4.2), Order (1.6), Industriousness/Grit (4.2), Achievement Striving (3.1), Self-Discipline (3.9), Deliberation (2.6), Rationality/Wisdom (5.0), Extraversion: (Warmth (1.7), Poise (5.0), Toughness/Dynamism (5.0), Ingenuity (5.0), Administrative Capacity (5.0), Acquisitive (4.2), Sociability (5.0), Aggression/Provocative (4.2), Self-Concept (4.7), Self-Dramatization (4.9), Dominance (5.0), Competitiveness (4.7), Gregariousness (2.7), Assertiveness (4.5), Activity (4.7), Excitement Seeking (4.7), Positive Emotions (2.5), Agreeableness: (Trust (1.7), Straightforwardness (1.1), Tranquillity (3.2), Psychoticism (5.0), Altruism (1.3), Compliance (1.3), Individualism (5.0), Liberality (3.5), Modesty (4.2), Empathy (5.0), Social Understanding/Prosociality (5.0), Warmth (1.8), Tender-mindedness (1.0), Attachment/Communality (1.9), Neuroticism: (Anxiety (1.5), Narcissism (4.7), Self-Monitoring/Perception (4.7), Cautiousness (2.6), Angry Hostility (3.9), Sadomasochism (3.9), Depression (2.8), Depth (5.0), Introspection (5.0), Happiness (4.2), Reflection (4.9), Psychic Dimensionality (5.0), Cool-headedness (4.7), Planning (3.8), Self-Consciousness (1.9), Impulsiveness (3.9), Vulnerability (1.8), Melancholy (3.2), Self-Contempt (5.0).On the Bernreuter "Personality Inventory" the following characteristics were indicated: Emotional adjustment better than average, tends to be alone, rarely asks for sympathy or encouragement, tends to ignore advice of others, seldom worries, rarely substitutes daydreaming for action, tends to dominate in face-to-face situations, to be wholesomely self-confident, well adjusted to environment, solitary, independent, and non-social, attitudes appreciated by many. Though, he is now wholesomely self-confident and adventurous, thirsting for new and broader horizons, fruitful activity and abundant living, as a child, he had an inferiority complex because of his small build and poor health, he drew further and still further into himself, was always alone, couldn’t seem to make friends; and a seething, fiery rage slowly grew inside the small boy. He was also a highly dominant child at school, a born leader, who seems to have embarked on burglary at an early age (nine has been quoted) — not, as in the case of Panzram, out of envy of contemporaries from wealthier backgrounds, but simply out of devilment. He was a solitary, deeply interested in mysticism and the occult, in transcendent experiences. (high scores for self-sufficiency and dominance). The summary of results shows that the highly intelligent are less neurotic, more self-sufficient, and less submissive, as a group, than are the populations with which they are comparable. This divergence from the norms is found both for boys and for girls of the highly intelligent group, but it is much more pronounced for boys, more competitive, dominant, aggressive, and dynamic than even boys are supposed to be.
