In one word: Patents. Bose owns several important noise-cancelling patents. This, compared to their competitors, allows them to have some of the best noise-cancelling products in the market.Bose has been a pioneer in the noise-cancellation technology business. Most of the consumer products we see from Bose now, are actually based on/built on the products and applications they made for the military.In 1989, Bose Corporation introduced the first commercially available active noise reduction headset. At best, I would say that their sound quality is decent. So, only get a noise-cancelling headphone if you really need one. Also, note that these noise-cancelling headphones do not work like magic. They mostly reduce low-frequency noise (airplane engines, air conditioners, etc.), but do little to reduce other ambient noise (people's voices, baby screams, etc.).Baby screams > Bose's patents... Its lesser if you can follow a strategy.According to my experienceThe Budget = initial costs+ tuition costs+ cost of living- RA / TA/ Campus jobs- InternshipsInitial Costs = Airfare $1000+ VISA costs INR 20K+ ( GRE + TOEFL exam Fee_) = $ 200+ Application Fee = ( $50 t0 $80 ) / College+ $25 / College to mail GRE and TOEFL scores to the College+ Courier charges / CollegeTuition Costs = ( $900 to $1100 ) * 30 Credits+ Health = $1200 per annum.+ College based expenses ( $500 to $800 ) per annum.Cost of Living = ( $ 400 to $600 ) per month.House Rent is low in non-urban colleges, high in bigger cities.Internet costs $30 per month.Food and incidentals are minimal.RA / TA Assistantship makes a big difference. An RA/TA ship can waive off the tuition fees of one subject + $500 per month stipend. The stipend can compensate the cost of living for a semester.On Campus Jobs. An F1 Student can work 20 hours a week. On campus jobs pay $8 to $12 per hour. That makes $640 to $960 per month. Some charitable institutions can be approached to help you with the own expense, but you should be a deserving candidate both academically as well as financially.Now comes the part of providing the college with proof of having enough finance to cover your expenses for 1 year which would be around 22 L one can take a short duration loan to show the balance in your parent's bank balance and comply with the requirements of admission and F1 Visa. However let me be very clear that if your parents do not earn substantially you will neither be able to avail a loan nor be able to prove your finances. Some people scrape through. All right, you're not the first PhD student to have motivation issues and you most certainly won't be the last.Different people suffer from lack of motivation for different reasons, but I think the two most common reasons for an average PhD student are:1) Being unsure of the future and how, if at all, the PhD is going to help you figure it out.2) Not sure if anybody really cares about what you are doing, hence why do it?Lets address the second issue first simply because for me, this was more important. Now, lets first put your PhD in perspective. You have been given a problem by your PhD advisor, a problem that is unique and whose solution you won't be able to find out by a mere google search. There is a reason your advisor thought this problem is worth solving - whether that reason is industrial interest or pure intellectual curiosity. Either way, there has got to be a very good reason.What has worked for me is to figure out this reason. When you are doing a background literature survey about your thesis topic, don't just concentrate on what other researchers around the world have done which directly relates to your topic, perform a decent survey on peripheral areas as well - which are indirectly related to your topic. This might seem a waste of time, but is not.I'll give you an example - my thesis topic was on MEMS switches (It's not important if you are not familiar with this, just read on). But I didn't stop at just surveying other works on MEMS switches - I tried to understand why MEMS switches are an important alternative to semiconductor switches. This made me look at the work of researchers working on other totally different devices also meant for switching. Then I didn't stop at device engineering, I looked at work by circuit engineers to understand how they implement these devices in an actual circuit. I tried to understand the applications of these circuits in different real-life gadgets. In other words, I did a bottom-up survey to understand exactly how my research work fits into the overall big picture.Understanding the big picture is a huge, huge motivator. Too often, PhDs are concentrating on the trees and ignoring the forest. Once you understand that your tiny contribution is actually going to make a small but measurable difference to this overall big picture, you will look forward to doing what you are doing.You also need to keep reminding yourself about this overall big picture. There will be days when your hypotheses won't work. Days when your data won't make sense. These are especially the days you'll need to motivate yourself and the big picture always helps. Even if your approach and hypotheses don't work, remember you have done a huge favor to the scientific community because others won't follow the same approach.Now, coming to the first issue of anxiety about the future. This is not my area of expertise since I'm still trying to figure out about my own future. However, depending on your thesis topic, you either have more chance of succeeding in an industrial environment or an academic one. Or maybe both. In either case, it helps to draft a plan. Find out how the skill set you are likely to develop during the course of your PhD would help you find the right job. Sometimes, for theoretical work, it's just your problem solving skills and expertise in area of research that will catch the eyes of the employer. For experimental work, often its the skills you gain in handling equipment and designing experiments that makes you an asset. Attend seminars organized by companies and attend career fairs to talk to employers and find out what sort of skills they are looking for. Start this process early on.If you are more interested in academia, make the most of the conferences you attend. Seek out faculty members working in similar areas from universities you are interested in joining and see how you can strike collaborations. You can also email faculty members whose work you have read about and are interested in.Also, Conferences can sometimes be helpful to network with people from the industry as well.Good luck! There will be days when you will feel like procrastinating, will feel like not doing anything. just keep your chin up and remember you have made it this far because you chose to pursue your dreams of seeking the depths of knowledge. Just keep pursuing that same dream and you'll be fine.
