PDF Editor FAQ

What makes Bose's noise cancellation technology better than most of their competitors?

In one word: Patents. Bose owns several important noise-cancelling patents. This, compared to their competitors, allows them to have some of the best noise-cancelling products in the market.Bose has been a pioneer in the noise-cancellation technology business. Most of the consumer products we see from Bose now, are actually based on/built on the products and applications they made for the military. In 1989, Bose Corporation introduced the first commercially available active noise reduction headset. This product was designed for the aviation industry for communication in light aircraft and helicopters. In 1991, the U.S. Air Force selected Bose Corporation to produce an Acoustic Noise Cancelling headset for flight helmets and, in 1993, the Combat Vehicle Crewman (CVC) headset went into production for the U.S. Army. The contract for the Performance Improved Combat Vehicle Crewman (PICVC) headset was renewed and these headsets are used by the U.S. Army on Abrams Tanks and Bradley Fighting Vehicles. U.S. Air Force pilots flying the C-130 and other aircraft also have been outfitted with Bose active noise reduction headsets. Product improvements were introduced in 1995 with the Acoustic Noise Cancelling® headset Series II, which was awarded “Product of the Year” by the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA).In 1998, the Bose Aviation Headset XTM was introduced, offering a breakthrough in performance with Bose’s proprietary TriPort® headphone structure. In 2004, Bose Corporation introduced the TriPort® Tactical Headset, which was employed by infantry soldiers operating military Humvees, cargo trucks, and other wheeled vehicles. In 2013, Bose Corporation introduced the T5 Tactical Headset, which allows dismounted soldiers to continue to have the benefits of Bose’s technology while away from their vehicle, among other advances. [1]These days, Bose boasts of several consumer-level noise-cancelling headphones (Quiet Comfort series: Noise Cancelling Headphones | Bose), that constantly top the charts in their category. These headphones use Bose's patented Acoustic Noise Cancelling® headphone technology. In fact, Bose protects its noise-cancelling headphones through a series of patents. For example, Quiet Comfort 20 or QC20, which is one of their noise-cancelling headphones, is protected by 27 U.S. patents (14 patents and 13 pending applications). Chief among these are: United States Patent: 6717537 (“Method and Apparatus for Minimizing Latency in Digital Signal Processing Systems”), United States Patent: 8073150 (“Dynamically Configurable ANR Signal Processing Topology”), United States Patent: 8073151 ("Dynamically configurable ANR filter block topology"), United States Patent: 8054992 (“High Frequency Compensating”), and United States Patent: 8345888 (“Digital High Frequency Phase Compensation”).This is how Active noise reduction works:Image Source: Noise-canceling Headphones - HowStuffWorksActive noise reduction is achieved through electronics. QuietComfort® headphones have a microphone in each earcup that 'listens' to sounds before they can reach your ears. Our U.S. patented proprietary Bose technologies compare those sounds to the sound you wish to hear – which may be music from an audio source, or simply some peace and tranquillity – then instantly generate a 'mirror image' of the unwanted sound. This opposing signal is sent to the speakers in each headphone earcup to cancel out much of the undesired noise. [2]What you must realize is that noise cancelling is not so easy to achieve. Bose has dedicated years of research and a lot of money to develop (and improve) its technology. Many companies just buy off-the-shelf noise-cancelling circuitry, which is nowhere near as good as Bose's innovative and patented technology. In addition to active noise reduction, Bose headphones also use proprietary technologies in the ear cushions, that blocks undesirable noise even further. So, this interplay of active and passive noise reduction helps in dramatically reducing the unwanted noise. One more thing I would add is that, Bose's noise-cancelling headphones, especially QC25s, in addition to being great at noise reduction, are really comfortable to use.Sources:[1] http://cdn1.vox-cdn.com/assets/4811900/BoseBeatsComplaint.pdf[2] http://worldwide.bose.com/electroforce/en_us/web/noise_cancelling_technology/page.html[3] Patents: Bose CorporationEdit: I must mention that a noise-cancelling headphone would not offer the same sound quality as a same-priced non-noise-cancelling headphone. At best, I would say that their sound quality is decent. So, only get a noise-cancelling headphone if you really need one. Also, note that these noise-cancelling headphones do not work like magic. They mostly reduce low-frequency noise (airplane engines, air conditioners, etc.), but do little to reduce other ambient noise (people's voices, baby screams, etc.).Baby screams > Bose's patents... Sadly :/Edit 2.0: Bose sued Beats for infringing its noise-cancelling patents earlier this year. Both companies settled out of court for an undisclosed amount.Apple's Beats, Bose settle patent spat over noise-canceling tech - CNETEdit 3.0: To make my answer more credible, I asked Brent Butterworth (Bio of Brent Butterworth, Stereos Guide) the same question on Twitter. He pretty much reiterated what I said in my answer. Hope this helps.Edit 4.0: Bose's official page on Facebook hinted that it is due to the years of research they have put into their noise-cancellation technology.

How do so many Indians afford to do an MS in USA? How do people without property to sell or money in savings pay for these schools?

I have first hand experience about this. ( 2013 -2014)$40K is not the correct budget. Its lesser if you can follow a strategy.According to my experienceThe Budget = initial costs+ tuition costs+ cost of living- RA / TA/ Campus jobs- InternshipsInitial Costs = Airfare $1000+ VISA costs INR 20K+ ( GRE + TOEFL exam Fee_) = $ 200+ Application Fee = ( $50 t0 $80 ) / College+ $25 / College to mail GRE and TOEFL scores to the College+ Courier charges / CollegeTuition Costs = ( $900 to $1100 ) * 30 Credits+ Health = $1200 per annum.+ College based expenses ( $500 to $800 ) per annum.Cost of Living = ( $ 400 to $600 ) per month.House Rent is low in non-urban colleges, high in bigger cities.Internet costs $30 per month.Food and incidentals are minimal.RA / TA Assistantship makes a big difference. An RA/TA ship can waive off the tuition fees of one subject + $500 per month stipend. The stipend can compensate the cost of living for a semester. On Campus Jobs. An F1 Student can work 20 hours a week. On campus jobs pay $8 to $12 per hour. That makes $640 to $960 per month. However actual payments will be less as one may not get to work 20 hours per week, All the same one can cover living expenses.Summer Internships : One can get 6-8 weeks internship salary during summer break. If you have job experience, good scores and able to clear interviews, a summer internship can pay for a whole semester. One has to be ready with the cash needed for the initial costs + tuition costs for the first semester + living costs which could amount to around INS 10 to 12 Lacs. This can be reduced by the following methods.1. Get RA/ TA right from 1st semester. How? Good Scores, Job Experience, Good TOEFL Scores, Recommendation Letters from people in top positions from your employers or clients .2. Mention in application that you wont join unless given Assistantship. It is difficult to get campus jobs during the first semester. You might get it after third or fourth month. These jobs can only cover your living costs nothing more. A RA or TA ship may help reduce tuition costs. The amount varies from college to college. Govt aided colleges give maximum financial support. Private run colleges offer minimum. One can hope to get RA / TA based on one's performance and connections in the second semester and reduce the tuition fees by 30%.At the end of the second semester one can work the summer break on OPT and can earn enough to pay for the third semester tuition fees. One can go full time OPT if the college and the company allows and work full time to cover all further costs as well as pay back some loan.If all goes well the budget will get reduced to Tuition costs for 1st Sem and 2nd Semester minus waivers for RA / TA plus Living costs for 1st Sem. One usually gets campus jobs to cover living costs. This would amount to a total of 18-20Lacs.If you do not have the financial strength to cover the costs you have to avail a loan from a nationalized bank. They will expect you to declare your total costs which you can state as 40L. They will only pay a part of the total costs, usually 60%. It is not necessary to prove a networth of 40L to get the loan. If your parents are employed you will get the loan.A typical out lay of funds would be as shown below.Type of expense Own expense Loan Funded TotalInitial Expense 1.5 to 2 L… . . . . . . 1.5 to 2 L1st Sem . . . . . . 4 L . . . . . .4 L . . . . . .8L2nd Sem . . . . . . 4 L . . . . . .4 L . . . . . .8LTotal . . . . . . . . . . 8 L . . . . . .8 L . . . . . .18 LOne can generate the expenses for the rest of the semesters thru Internships and OPTThe banks providing loan can shift some expenses from own expense to bank loanThe bottom line being that if you can not generate at least 8L of cash on your own, do not think of an MS in US. Some charitable institutions can be approached to help you with the own expense, but you should be a deserving candidate both academically as well as financially. Now comes the part of providing the college with proof of having enough finance to cover your expenses for 1 year which would be around 22 L one can take a short duration loan to show the balance in your parent's bank balance and comply with the requirements of admission and F1 Visa. However let me be very clear that if your parents do not earn substantially you will neither be able to avail a loan nor be able to prove your finances. Some people scrape through. But if you can genuinely prove your networth, all the myths about F1 visa interview can be ignored.ConclusionThe following points are very importantOne has to have the ability to pay minimum 8L for the first year.Parents should have substantial earnings.Good scores and Job ExperienceStreams of education matter too. Internships in non-IT streams are limited. Here is an important update.Prodigy Finance is a British non-banking financial company. It can offer you 100% finance at very low interest rates ( 8–9%) without collateral. Your guarantor needs to show networth. The best part of the deal is that you do not have to visit any office. You do not have to even get a notarised affidavit for financial support. All documentation is carried out by downloading forms , signing, scanning and uploading. This is 100% valid process, not something I read on the net. Very good for students who have a couple of years of workex because they ask for the student’s credit score. And the credit score report is free. There is a one time $500 processing charge which they add to the loan, you do not have to pay it upfront.

How do PhD students keep their motivation up?

All right, you're not the first PhD student to have motivation issues and you most certainly won't be the last.Different people suffer from lack of motivation for different reasons, but I think the two most common reasons for an average PhD student are:1) Being unsure of the future and how, if at all, the PhD is going to help you figure it out.2) Not sure if anybody really cares about what you are doing, hence why do it?Lets address the second issue first simply because for me, this was more important. Now, lets first put your PhD in perspective. You have been given a problem by your PhD advisor, a problem that is unique and whose solution you won't be able to find out by a mere google search. There is a reason your advisor thought this problem is worth solving - whether that reason is industrial interest or pure intellectual curiosity. Either way, there has got to be a very good reason. What has worked for me is to figure out this reason. When you are doing a background literature survey about your thesis topic, don't just concentrate on what other researchers around the world have done which directly relates to your topic, perform a decent survey on peripheral areas as well - which are indirectly related to your topic. This might seem a waste of time, but is not.I'll give you an example - my thesis topic was on MEMS switches (It's not important if you are not familiar with this, just read on). But I didn't stop at just surveying other works on MEMS switches - I tried to understand why MEMS switches are an important alternative to semiconductor switches. This made me look at the work of researchers working on other totally different devices also meant for switching. Then I didn't stop at device engineering, I looked at work by circuit engineers to understand how they implement these devices in an actual circuit. I tried to understand the applications of these circuits in different real-life gadgets. In other words, I did a bottom-up survey to understand exactly how my research work fits into the overall big picture.Understanding the big picture is a huge, huge motivator. Too often, PhDs are concentrating on the trees and ignoring the forest. Once you understand that your tiny contribution is actually going to make a small but measurable difference to this overall big picture, you will look forward to doing what you are doing. You also need to keep reminding yourself about this overall big picture. There will be days when your hypotheses won't work. Days when your data won't make sense. These are especially the days you'll need to motivate yourself and the big picture always helps. Even if your approach and hypotheses don't work, remember you have done a huge favor to the scientific community because others won't follow the same approach. Now, coming to the first issue of anxiety about the future. This is not my area of expertise since I'm still trying to figure out about my own future. However, depending on your thesis topic, you either have more chance of succeeding in an industrial environment or an academic one. Or maybe both. In either case, it helps to draft a plan. Find out how the skill set you are likely to develop during the course of your PhD would help you find the right job. Sometimes, for theoretical work, it's just your problem solving skills and expertise in area of research that will catch the eyes of the employer. For experimental work, often its the skills you gain in handling equipment and designing experiments that makes you an asset. Attend seminars organized by companies and attend career fairs to talk to employers and find out what sort of skills they are looking for. Start this process early on.If you are more interested in academia, make the most of the conferences you attend. Seek out faculty members working in similar areas from universities you are interested in joining and see how you can strike collaborations. You can also email faculty members whose work you have read about and are interested in.Also, Conferences can sometimes be helpful to network with people from the industry as well.Good luck! There will be days when you will feel like procrastinating, will feel like not doing anything. just keep your chin up and remember you have made it this far because you chose to pursue your dreams of seeking the depths of knowledge. Just keep pursuing that same dream and you'll be fine.
