Post Course Evaluation: Fill & Download for Free

As a student I never thought much about my teachers, they were merely the source of frustration and angst. They gave assignments that ruined my weekend and holiday plans, they judged me and posted their judgment to the world.Then I became an instructor and I got to see another side of things. Students ruined my weekend and holiday plans because I had to grade all their awful papers. And they judge me, telling my boss what they think of me through their course evaluations.Most of the time I feel like I'm throwing wisdom down a bottomless pit. Just flushing it down a hole where it will never be seen again. Most students do as little as they can to get through a course. Some do better than others but most of that can be chalked up to natural ability rather than differences in dedication or enthusiasm for the subject.But office hours are much different than being in class. Office hours are one on one time where you get to know students on an individual basis. Some come because they want to argue for a better grade, but most are there because they want to understand. That's a great moment.Professors spend a good portion of their lives becoming experts on the topics they teach and there's nothing they like more than sharing that knowledge with people who are genuinely interested in it. So when a student comes to office hours to learn it's a very gratifying experience.

I wrote a script to look up all the CI-H classes in the MIT Subject Listing & Schedule and then scrape the course evaluation system for the most recent term's student ratings. In 1967, students at UC Berkeley created one of the first publications in which the students evaluated the teachers. According to a survey of Kaczynski’s students done at that time, Kaczynski was extremely awkward and had almost no skill whatsoever interacting with students. This 1996 article from the Washington Post, published shortly after he was captured, quoted from those course evaluation surveys:An informal, unscientific survey used by a student organization to evaluate faculty members paints a picture of a distant, cold teacher bereft of any charisma or flair.The survey quotes: "These six assorted questionnaires from last year agreed that Kaczynski's lectures were useless and right from the book. Three questionnaires from the Math 120A class last spring said he showed no concern for the students." The survey then quoted an anonymous student: "He absolutely refuses to answer questions by completely ignoring the students." Six students gave him grades of one B, one C, one D, and three Fs.
