Some audiophiles believe Beats headphones are not as good as JBL, Sennheiser, and Sony headphones. Beats headphones don’t have good architecture and sound quality. Is it true?

Yes it’s true. The Beats headphones have several problems in terms of accurately reproducing music, as other answers have noted. These include:Over-emphasised bass frequencies which sound unnatural, if sometimes fun.Weak treble and unsatisfying mid because of the swamping effect on the drivers of the over-emphasised bassRelatively cheap and low-quality drivers for the price. I’m sure quality has improved in the past 3 years but this report gave audiophiles a lot of ammunition against Beats.Poor reproduction of music involving a relatively wide frequency range because of uneven frequency reproduction. This is particularly noticeable when listening to classical piano pieces.A frequency reproduction profile that’s really tailored for club music as opposed to a wide range of music from classical to jazz.Effort spent making things feel expensive rather than using top quality components. For example using metal components to add weight rather than improve sound quality. Sometimes Bose is accused of this but with Bose the issue is more to do with using modular driver components in speakers which are compensated for by clever DSP and EQ but headphones are where Bose’s world-leading psychoacoustic research comes to the fore. I have nothing against Bose, indeed the QCs are a brilliant product which I recommend below.I don’t necessarily care what audiophiles think about music equipment as sometimes a coloured sound reproduction can be fun. That has to be balanced however with components of a suitable quality to enable me to hear the less-coloured or pushed frequencies clearly. In my experience that isn’t the case with Beats where the detail and integrity of music is often lost.“Colouring” means emphasising part of the frequency spectrum. You sometimes hear of a V-shape frequency response which means emphasising the bass and treble. This gives the effect of making bass more prominent and louder, which can sound fun, while emphasising the detail of treble. It’s also important to understand that we perceive rhythm more clearly in bass frequencies. What’s lost in such colouring of frequencies is often the mids, which can sound recessed and lack definition depending on the vocal range of the singer. Ever wonder why club music producers like female singers with a high vocal range? It keeps the female vocal clear of the swamp of bass. It also happens to sound much better on a range of non-audiophile grade sound equipment. Electronic / club music producers who typically use this to great effect include Calvin Harris (listen carefully to the pitch of the singer’s voice versus the bass notes) and David Guetta (no accident that one of his biggest hits has a vocal by Sia who has serious power in higher octaves). But what if you prefer listening to acoustic music, classical, opera, jazz, more complex electronica such as Aphex Twin or Autechre? What this jargon means is that your typical lower-budget bass-boosted headphones lose some of the clarity in the mids and treble that enables you to accurately distinguish different instruments. Unfortunately, this applies to Beats too. In a really good quality pair of headphones, you’ll hear flubs, mistakes, and unmuted tones as hands move across guitar strings for example. You might not want to hear all that but you also get the intensity of a pick striking a string which is beautiful to witness. You can distinguish the location of different instruments in the “sound stage” and the whole experience is more analytical, meaning there’s more information about how the music was recorded that you can appreciate.Audiophiles are people who loves this detail. They spend a lot of time and money chasing it and once you hear it, you rarely want to go back.I prefer the following brands which offer some very nice products for similar money to Beats and, if you pay a bit more money, you can get some amazing stuff.Beyerdynamic - some great value stuff. DT 990s are wonderful but look at the impedance rating. You may need to get an amplifier to drive the higher impedance versions. I use a portable amp by a Scottish company called RHA. You’ll get more detail but you have to spend more. A classic audiophile trade-off !Sennheiser - ranges from good value to the best-in-class products. Look for last year’s models on sale, they’re generally outstanding value for money. The HD600 for HD650s are amazing and the Massdrop HD6xx represented fantastic value for money.Bowers & Wilkins - not a neutral sound but lovely mids that make listening to vocals a treat. Beautiful packaging that lasts in my experience. I have the P7s and some of their speakers.Sony - not an audiophile brand but some of the best technology in the business. They make few bad products and everything has good sound for $ spent. Make possibly the best wireless over-ear cans in the 1000 XM2 model. I prefer wired but the XM2s sound great.Bose - still the reference for noice-cancelling products. Spends a fortune on R&D and it shows.V-Moda - excellent value for moneyGrado - real audiophile stuff but worth itAKG - can’t really go wrong. The AKG 701 or 702 is the anti-Beats headphone. Often on sale with steep reductions and therefore available at a cheaper price than Beats. Full of amazing detail and sound separation. Arguably not that fashionable but who cares when it sounds this good. The interesting point here is that the design of high quality headphones tends to be evolutionary rather than revolutionary. Products are incrementally improved over many years and older models are often available for outstanding value. If you want a thumping bass sound that doesn’t destroy the mids / highs and a less traditional approach to headphone design then take a look at Nuraphone which gives an immersive bass experience via an unusual headphone design (part in-ear, part over-ear speakers). A friend just got his and I thought they sounded intriguing when calibrated, even if the “generic” EQ is stupidly bad. You get detail from the in ear and head rattling bass, if that’s what you want! However, I’d strongly consider investing in the AKG 7XX series if you want phones for listening to music in private and perhaps dabbling in sound production. I use Q701 for messing around with electronic music production in Ableton and they give outstanding detail. The Q701s are the ones with the Quincy Jones tie-in and they’re a bit funkier, if that’s you’re thing. Their open-back design isn’t suitable for listening in public and they’ve been around for yonks but the build quality is good and the sound is even better. I own a pair and I got them for silly low price due to the wonderful colour scheme (lime green, private use only!) . In a strictly sound detail / $ paid evaluation, there’s nothing else that can hold a candle. The K712 is similar sounding but with a warmer sound and more coloured (mid) bass. The Sennheiser HD600s and 650s sound a bit warmer and I believe some people would prefer them for every day use. Again, these are quality phones that have evolved over more than a decade of tweaks and have a huge following among pro and amateur music producers. In terms of professional closed-back headphones, the Sennheiser HD25 range is the gold standard for DJ use. Lots of information hereConsider purchasing a portable headphone amp or amp & DAC (digital audio converter) unit. I recommend my RHA L1 DACAMP but Fiio do a range of products worth buying. This will help a higher-impedance audiophile grade headphones like the AKG Pro models or Sennheiser HD pro models reproduce more of the detail of the music you’re listening to while making EQ explicit rather than the inevitably outcome of heavily tuned or coloured headphones. Basically, if you want more bass, then bias it yourself to a level you’re comfortable with the tradeoffs across the frequency spectrum depending on the music you’re listening to. You may spend a few hundred bucks between headphones and portable amp but you’ll be delighted with the results. In a nutshell, the reason audiophiles don’t like Beats is that they know you can get better quality elsewhere for less money. You can also be an audiophile on a. budget when it comes to headphones and amps, you don’t need a budget of thousands or tens of thousands. Audiophile brands tend to be functional with the most expensive components you can get for the price. When you spend a lot of $$ on audiophile equipment, say Sennheiser HD800S phones and matching HDVD800 amp, you know you're getting a technically brilliant product where styling was secondary to functionality. However, if you’re someone who likes the Beats sound signature when compared with other equipment, then by all means, buy Beats. It’s best to try other stuff first so you understand the choice you’re making. It’s also been pointed out that Beats are improving. If you’ve read all the way down through this (very expanded) answer, you’ll also know that you can use the combination of high quality phones and portable amp to give you a Beats-like sound (but clearer) when you want it and more balanced or natural sound when you don’t.EDIT1: I know I’ve said Sony isn’t an audiophile brand because that’s not the majority of their offering but I want to acknowledge the audiophile quality of their best offerings. When Sony decided to hit it out of the park they had the engineers and technology to deliver. The MDR-R10 is possibly the best dynamic headphone ever made and the fibonacci patterned grill on the current MDR-Z1R (to reduce resonances behind the driver) is a thing of engineering wonder & beauty. The audiophile criticism of Sony’s more recent offerings is they haven’t made a headphone in 30 years that improves on the sound of the MDR-R10. The very best products aren’t about just one feature, it’s the whole design including materials choices, circuitry, tuning and even fit. Not all of this is planned, some is discovered like magic.EDIT2: Inner Fidelity is no more, as anyone who searched for it online will have noticed. All the best to Tyll in his well-earned retirement. It’s just a shame that he didn’t find a successor.EDIT 3: Yes, I should have mentioned Audio Technica. Mea culpa to the commenters who pointed out how silly I was to overlook this great Japanese brand. It was remiss of me and I mentioned them in the comments. The Audio Technical ATH-M50X is one of the best value professional monitor headphones on the market at around $120–150. A friend of mine is an electronic music producer and he swears by them. However, he’s told me that he always listens to his tracks on Beats too. The simple reason is those are the cans most of his listeners use so he has to make sure his work sounds as good as possible.EDIT 4: Beats are getting better. They’re actually very solid options for workout headphones, just still not “audiophile grade”. That’s not the consumer they’re aimed at, and that’s fine!

I think this is an excellent software, but there are things I'm still learning, so my review really only points to the one thing that annoys me. You have to sign in and be connected to the internet to ensure the software gives full access, even though i purchased full download. I moved from Apple mac to PC recently, and have given up Apple's very good free product called Preview. The jury is still out as to whether or not i did the right thing.
