PDF Editor FAQ

Can any middle class man can use Ducati in daily life are there any cheap bikes available of Ducati?

Middle class and their financial wealth depends on the country you are living in. In Germany the best selling bike is the BMW R1200GS, which starts at approx. 14,000€ incl. V.A.T.. One very good selling bike for beginners is the Honda NC700S which starts just below 6,000 €. The cheapest Ducati offered to the german market is the Monster 696, which starts at 8,800 €. This is about the price you have to pay for many other beginner bikes like HD Sportster 883, BMW F700 or just any entry level Triumph. If you want to spend substantially less than 8,000 € you have to buy a japanese bike or chose a preowned one. Conclusion: Owning a small monster or an used supersport is no sign of being upper class. One must not forget that even the Panigiale S costs less than a 3 series BMW sedan without accessories and options. And many true bike enthusiasts in Germany do not own a car.

What is it like living with a Ducati Monster 696 in India? Is it worth the financial and emotional investment?

I don't have a Ducati Monster, or any Ducati , but as an owner of a midsize supersport, I'll say it depends on 3 things :1. your own nature2.your income3.your address/area you live inSince you mention financial investment, I presume you are middle-class rather than very rich, also indicated by the fact that you're asking for the entry level model.Your own nature - Do you really love riding motorcycles enough to put up with the expenses and wait for parts to arrive, for weeks and months after ordering? Good after sales service is the biggest problem with big bikes. You rarely get knowledgeable technicians, and those few who are, will often have little time - you'll need to make appointments, and they will not of course be cheap in terms of labour cost. What kind of riding do you really do, or like to do ? Street-sport ? Off-road ? Drag-racing ? Touring ?A Duc Monster is primarily a street bike, meant for urban commutes but considered a hooligan fun bike. As long as you stick to good/decent roads, it will do fine.Owning a big bike requires lot of patience, due to uncooperative traffic who will not move out of the way to let you enjoy the bike even at moderate speeds. Now this is an air-cooled machine, so it will get rather hot and you will feel the heat around your lower legs. ( Never ride in shorts, always wear at least full length jeans and shoes, aside from helmet etc. ). Being air-cooled, it does reduce points of failure though, no coolant pump or radiator to leak (there is an oil cooler).Ducatis have been traditionally known to be unreliable, especially the electronics. I hear in recent years the quality and reliability has got better. That said, if you want lesser headaches, buy Japanese vehicles, they're generally more reliable, though not necessarily cheaper to maintain in the same price range. It makes about 80hp which is plenty for Indian conditions, though depending on your wants, you might feel like you still want more. Realistically you won't be able to use that power safely, with speeds over 150km/h even on a good wide highway being very very risky due to the general lack of traffic/road sense. Most of the time in the city, it will be frustrating since the general traffic is far slower than you , they will occupy most of the road/lanes denying you the chance to overtake and move on. This is why most big bike owners prefer to get up early and ride out of town before the urban traffic clogs the roads. You still hit thick urban traffic on the return leg though.Moving at slow urban crawling speed will cause the bike to heat up a lot more, you will be stuck in lower 3 gears for most part and your fuel economy will take a hit , making it even more frustrating. So you will need to adjust your timings to match less traffic times of the day.Big bikes will attract attention, and personally I dislike anyone touching my ride without my consent. YMMV. But being a naked bike, it attracts much less attention than fully-faired sportbike. Some people may notice it, some will not. Depending on how comfortable you are with people touching and sitting on the bike, you can't leave these bike unattended in a public parking. I avoid places where I have to park my bike out of sight, easier since it is only my weekend ride, not daily ride. The Monster being a naked bike, the ergonomics are relatively upright, so you don't lean as much as on a sportbike, which makes it a lot more comfortable, and it will not frustrate you as much at lower speeds in traffic. Suspension comfort may vary - sportbikes are usually stiffer, naked bikes generally setup to be more compliant.Even if you are comfortable enough to ride the bike everyday, for long commutes, it's better to have a regular Indian made bike or scooter for daily commutes, if you're not rich enough to manage the running expenses as a daily commuter. Some people do use Ninja 650s as their daily ride, some have Triumph Street Triples as daily commutes.Your income -if you can comfortably manage all your regular expenses, and still have around INR 50,000-100,000 a year to spend on optional/hobby expenses, after buying the bike (include any EMI deductions), then only buy a bike bike. These bikes are a bit more costly to run and maintain than a car of similar price. You'll typically spend in a year - :INR 20000 insurance (reducing yearly with depreciation)INR 10000 service+ regular parts like air/oil filtersINR 25-30000 tyres ( expect 5000-10000km life , so you will change tyres at least every alternate year unless you ride very little)INR 10-15000 brake pads (expect to change every 10-15000km , so every alternate year )INR 10-15000 for chain-sprocket set ( expect to change every 15-20000km )Add fuel expenses say 30,000Any other accessories you add, will be costly too. A simple mirror will cost 2500 or more.Your address -if you have your own bungalow/row-house, the parking is more secure and gives you peace of mind. In apartments, with common parkings, you often get people loafing about who will fiddle with the bike for kicks. A private, enclosed parking gives you a lot more security and peace of mind. Also, if you live in a more posh, upscale area, there is less chance of rowdy persons to fiddle with your bike. Most Important :A motorcycle is never a financial investment, unless it's a classic/antique collector's item which you bought and intend to sell , rather than ride.As an emotional investment - it varies. For me, hell yes !You live more in a few minutes of riding an exciting motorcycle, than you do in hours or days of humdrum existence. To experience a better thrill than a fast bike, you need to be either a fighter pilot or an astronaut or Formula 1 or MotoGP racer. Few of us will ever experience that. Most of all - for some, including me, a fast sporty motorcycle is such a cure for many ills - you don't need anti-depressants when you have a great motorcycle.I have little interest in drinking, smoking and drugs - a motorcycle delivers a better high than any, or all of these.
