PDF Editor FAQ

Why won’t Donald Trump show his tax returns?

Hello!I can “sorta” answer this…Needless to tell you all that the answer is that Trump has a lot to hide. Numerous pages have been filled with myriad theories why Trump doesn’t want the public to know about his financial situation. But here’s something most of you don’t know though. Buckle up!!House Ways and Means Chairman Rep. Richard Neal is reportedly sitting on a credible and "potentially explosive" whistleblower complaint alleging that President Donald Trump attempted to influence an IRS audit of his tax returns. On Wednesday, as much of the public's attention focused on a whistleblower complaint regarding Trump and Ukraine, HuffPost reported that a federal employee in July approached the House Ways and Means Committee with evidence the president "tried to corrupt an Internal Revenue Service audit of his personal tax returns."Neal, a Democrat from Massachusetts, has refused to discuss the tax whistleblower's claims in public, opting instead to use the official's allegations to strengthen the Ways and Means Committee's legal effort to obtain Trump's tax returns. But now that House Democrats are moving forward with a formal impeachment inquiry against Trump, progressives are demanding that Neal break his silence on the whistleblower complaint and give the public as much information as possible about another potential abuse of power by the president."If the House Ways and Means Committee believes that Donald Trump has unduly influenced the IRS, they have a duty to make the public aware of this blatant act of corruption," Ryan Thomas, spokesperson for progressive advocacy group Stand Up America, told Common Dreams. In a brief filed in a Washington, D.C. federal court last month, the House Ways and Means Committee said it received "unsolicited communication" from a federal employee on July 29 detailing "credible allegations of 'evidence of possible misconduct'—specifically, potential 'inappropriate efforts to influence' the mandatory audit program."HuffPost reported that the committee's filing "provided no further detail about the whistleblower, but in a footnote, Democrats offered to tell U.S. District Judge Trevor McFadden all about it in private."Instead of making a public fuss about a potentially explosive whistleblower allegation about Trump's taxes, Democrats quietly offered to share it with a federal judge overseeing their tax return lawsuit.— Arthur Delaney (@ArthurDelaneyHP) September 25, 2019"A spokesman for the committee said this week that McFadden, a Trump nominee who donated to the Trump 2016 campaign and volunteered for the Trump presidential transition, has so far not asked to hear more about the whistleblower," according to HuffPost.Jeff Hauser, director of Revolving Door Project, an anti-corruption group, told HuffPost that publicizing the tax whistleblower's complaint could strengthen the case for impeachment."The House Ways and Means Committee must figure out a way to make the public aware of the serious cause to worry that the IRS might have been corrupted by Trump," Hauser said.Part of this answer is attributed to: Twitter. What is the worst thing Trump could be hiding in his taxes?

In medical school, we learned about Occam's razor. It's a useful construct to keep in mind when weighing possible explanations for signs and symptoms seen in clinical practice. Basically, it is a principle of parsimony that suggests the simplest explanation is most often the correct explanation.Donald Trump has refused to release his tax returns, shattering 40 years of presidential precedent. His excuse that his tax returns are "under audit" is illogical. Releasing tax returns he has already signed and submitted to the Internal Revenue Service would not influence his audit. There is no legal reason to refuse to do so, as his statement implies.Donald Trump claimed, throughout much of his campaign, that he was funding his campaign with his (unproven) wealth and would not be influenced by special interests. However, it's worth noting that he "loaned" the campaign 50 million dollars prior to his selection as the Republican candidate and was reluctant to forgive the loan, pressing the party to pay him back. This became an issue that prevented Trump from receiving contributions from large donors, who were concerned he would use their money to pay himself. A month or so before the convention, records show he divested his portfolio of all stocks, which provided a handy 38 million dollars. He claimed his move was based upon ethical concerns, but his actions since that time suggest ethical concerns are never a priority for Donald (remember, this is the man who cheated on his wives and failed to meet obligations to hundreds of small contractors.)Obviously, we don't know what Donald did with that cash infusion, but given his record of mismanagement, lavish expenditure, and debt service on at least 600 million dollars in outstanding loans, the simplest explanation for his divestment is this: he needed the cash. Donald has been robbing Peter to pay Paul throughout his career. Public records show a pattern of shifting personal debts and expenditures to his casino corporation in the 1990's, stealing from his shareholders. When Trump was able to bill the GOP for campaign expenses, he tripled the rent for his campaign office rental, while billing the campaign for a variety of services that were provided by one of his companies. Many of these services, such as rental of Mar-a-Lago, were substantially higher than market rates. His tangle of closely held corporations, including the company that operated his jet during the campaign, received significant sums that represented, in part, the contributions of Americans who budget every month to pay their mortgage and car payment.Donald Trump is facing what will surely only be the first of many lawsuits filed against him for violation of the Emoluments Clause of the Constitution. A lawsuit filed against the Daily Mail by Melania Trump claimed the paper had hurt her reputation and damaged her "brand." The lawsuit claimed multimillion dollar damages based on loss of the opportunity to profit from an unprecedented period during which Mrs. Trump would be "the most photographed woman in the world." CNN also reported last night that, in addition to the rent paid by the Secret Service to Trump Tower, the DOD was considering rental of space in the Trump building for as much as 1.5 million dollars annually. Other presidents have not charged the Secret Service to rent space on their property in order to protect them or to provide access to critical communication equipment. Trump must understand the visual on this. The simple explanation for Trump's failure to sell off his assets and set up a blind trust is the most likely one: he is insolvent. His sloppy business practices and personal lack of financial discipline make it likely that he is living from paycheck to paycheck. His ego and "brand" are inextricably bound up with his need to project an image of great wealth. He is heavily leveraged and afraid the world will find out. Middle class taxpayers are providing the essential cashflow Donald requires to keep his leaky ship afloat. If Donald Trump is financially compromised, it is as dangerous as the alleged "goldengate" tape.
