Kyrgyzstan is a country with a rich culture, but a lot of prehistory is left to myths and legend. The Kyrgyz people were nomads, so much of Kyrgyzstan's early history is very vague. Important events are therefore mostly recent. They were known as the Yenisei Kyrgyz, and they had Caucasian features, mixed with East Asian features. It is believed that they arrived from Siberia. They were mostly independent, occasionally being annexed broadly by some Turkic khaganates, the most important of which was the Uyghur Khaganate. The Uyghur Khaganate killed the Kyrgyz chiefs to take them under their rule around 750 A.D.The Uyghur Khaganate was huge. Here is a map of its territory.Around 840, a khagan (leader) named Kürebir was appointed. His rule was sloppy and brutal winters decimated the Khaganate. One of his rivals aided the Kyrgyz in a rebellion, and they burned down most of the major cities of the Khaganate, including the capital Ordu-Baliq, where the Kyrgyz beheaded Kürebir. By 850 the final kaghan had been killed by the Kyrgyz and they were free.The next important event in Kyrgyz history would be the introduction of Islam, which occurred during the 10th century via Persian traders. The Kyrgyz people are still predominantly Islamic, and have major Persian influences in their culture! Two centuries later, multiple Turkic tribes began to influence the Kyrgyz, leading to a mix of cultures that made them unique. Soon after, the Kyrgyz fell to Mongol invasions under Genghis Khan’s son. Wikipedia says that this decimated their culture, as the Kyrgyz writing system became nonexistent.Kyrgyzstan was a part of the Silk Road; many important sites from it still exist in northern Kyrgyzstan, near Lake Issyk-Kul.After the Mongols, the history of Kyrgyzstan was bland until the Russians annexed the area in 1876 (other tribes continued to rule over the area, such as the Uzbeks). Once the Russians arrived, a lot of Kyrgyz, it seemed, had had enough of being ruled by others, much less a tsar with a completely different culture than theirs. Many Kyrgyz travelled to live in Afghanistan, where a sizable majority remain today. A revolt in Central Asia during World War I was suppressed, but the USSR was born soon after.A nomadic Kyrgyz family in the steppes of present-day Uzbekistan in 1911.After being a part of present-day Kazakhstan when it came to SSRs, the Kirghiz SSR was created in 1936. Despite the general distaste for religion and traditional languages or cultures, the Kyrgyz language adopted a new Cyrillic alphabet and most Kyrgyz remained Muslim. Kyrgyzstan had rapid development under the USSR. When my mother was born, the city of Frünze (now Bishkek) was the capital of the SSR. It had a lot of greenery around it and even inside it, despite the usual depiction of all cities being filled with ugly communist flats. University was free and people had good standards of living. The arbitrary borders and forced relocations led to Kyrgyzstan having a lot of Uzbeks and Tajiks in the nation, along with Russians, Ukrainians, and other minorities that have now all left the country. The most notable of these would be Germans, who made towns modeled off of Bavarian architecture!Kyrgyzstan became independent from the USSR in 1991, as did the other republics. Living standards decreased under the dictatorship of the first President, Askar Akayev. Like every single other Central Asian country, elections were ridden with fraud. Schools lost funding, infrastructure crumbled, and rural places became lawless, with bride kidnapping becoming very common. Western countries lost interest in Kyrgyzstan after the early 2000’s once it became clear that it would remain close with Russia and China, and so most statistics for subjects such as education or the economy still portray Kyrgyzstan as an undeveloped country with terrible living standards; thankfully, this has improved. It all began in 2005 with the Tulip Revolution, when in March, protesters stormed government offices in Bishkek demanding for Akayev’s reign to end. He went into self-imposed exile in Moscow, where he resigned in April.Unfortunately, the new leader, Kurmanbek Bakiyev, was arguably worse. He ordered the murder of opposing political figures, and the capital Bishkek became filled with riots multiple times. In this lawlessness crime prospered; my great-grandmother was robbed of the equivalent of 500 CAD after she was held at gunpoint. Infrastructure continued to fail. Hot water was usually unavailable.In 2010, democracy finally arrived to Kyrgyzstan during a huge revolution led by a prominent figure in Kyrgyz politics, Roza Otunbayeva. Bakiyev left the country soon after and an interim government was set up by Mrs. Otunbayeva. Under her short rule, the powers of the President were decreased to prevent another authoritarian leader.Roza Otunbayeva, the only female leader of any Central Asian country as of 2018. She is still a prominent figure in Kyrgyz politics but cannot run for President due to age restrictions (she is too old).In 2011, a peaceful democratic transition of power occurred in elections and Almazbek Atambayev was elected. Although his presidency still saw some opposition members being arrested, for the most part, it was a vast improvement. Under his presidency Kyrgyzstan went back on track to developing. Schools have improved again, the GDP rose, and a tourism industry is beginning to develop. An expat community now exists in Bishkek and more foreign businesses are arriving. Kyrgyzstan is still rather poor, but the rural areas are being aided in growth.Last year, in October 2017, Kyrgyzstan held another democratic election. Sooronbay Jeenbekov, a former Prime Minister, won and became the President.
