It has been almost 11 years but I have a perfect recollection of the sequence of events that happened during the Winters of 2008. Before I begin, let me tell you briefly about what I was doing at that time and what were the conditions like.I was pursuing my Bachelors degree and was staying in a 2Bed room apartment with a friend of mine. Most common issue was the automatic turning on and off of the lights and fans in our apartment. It happened on multiple occasions that I woke up in the middle of the night of winters and the fan was on. Sometimes when I woke up in the morning, I found out that our main entrance gate to the apartment was open. I confronted my roommate that it is not safe to leave it open overnight, he denied it all the times. Same with me, whenever I came home late night, I went to bed after making sure that the gate was closed. Early in the morning he used to tell me that I forgot to close the gate the night before.Not just this, we had two girls living next door and they had similar problems like somebody knocking on their door and when they opened the door, no one was there. They also had somebody knocking and kicking the wall that was common between our apartment and their apartment. They assumed that we are partying and kicking the wall on purpose to annoy them. They told the community that it was us bothering them. I am glad they did. Here is why-On one specific occasion, we received a warning notice from our community in our mailbox. The notice was from 3 days ago and had instructions that we need to stop bothering them. We talked to the people at the community office and asked for the copy of complaint. In the complaint they had mentioned that on the night before they filed the complaint, we were banging on the walls in the middle of the night and making weird noises. Also that we rang their door bell multiple times during the night. Me and my roommate told the office people that we both were out of town on a camping trip and that we just came back and saw the complaint. We had enough evidence to prove that when all that happened, we both were out of town. The girls and the office people apologized. We talked to the girls and they told us that although we were not there in our apartment on that night, somebody was there for sure. This is when me and my roommate freaked out a little.Come December, it was vacation time and I decided to go spend few days with my parents and my roommate decided to stay in the apartment as he had to work on a college project. Back at my parents house, I was sleeping and had the scariest dream of my life. It was so scary that I got up and saw that I was sweating profusely. I checked the time, it was 4:00 AM in the morning. I drank some water and tried to get back to sleep. I could not sleep as the feeling of fear took over me. I tried to remember what the dream exactly was but I had no recollection. Just the fact that it was too scary.Moving on, at 6:00 AM, my phone starts ringing and I saw that it was my roommate calling. I answered the phone and I can still remember his exact words “Do not go in the house, there is a ghost in there. I am at my friends place and will be staying here till you come back”. For a second I was like, what is happening today. I could clearly sense the fear and anxiety in his voice so I asked him to calm down and tell me what happened. This is what he told me-“I was sleeping in my room when I heard someone crying in the kitchen. For a minute I assumed it is one of the girls next door but it got louder every minute. All of a sudden I heard our plates and bowls dropping on the floor in the kitchen. I woke up, turned on the light and went to the kitchen to check what was going on. As soon as I reached the dining room outside the kitchen, I saw a girl sitting on the floor with her back against the wall and her head resting on her knees. Her knees bent upwards so that she can rest her head on them. Her hairs were hanging down covering her ears. I had no clue what was going on and who she was. I moved a step closer to turn on the kitchen lights and all of a sudden she turned her face towards me. As soon as I saw her face, I run out of the apartment and ran towards my friend’s place. She had no eyes, no nose, no lips, nothing. Just a blank face and long hair hanging down on her shoulders covering her ears.”As soon as he finished the story, I realized that our worst fear has come true. There was a ghost living in our apartment with us all that time.Fast forward a week, I was still at my parents house and had already told them about the story. They told me not to live in that apartment anymore and that I should move out. I ask my roommate about what was going on. This is what happened during that week. He called his parents and went to the community office and told them the story. Initially, they said it was nothing and that he was just making stuff up. He and his parents kept pushing and threatened to call the cops if they were not told the truth. Finally, they were told that there was a girl who lived in that apartment before we moved in. One day she was hazed in the college by her seniors and had committed suicide. The day I had the dream and my roommate saw her, was the one year anniversary since her death.By this time everything was clear and we had received all our answers. Me and my roommate ended up moving to a new apartment and were promised by the community that the apartment will not be available for rent anymore for anyone. Not until they sort out the ghost issue. We are thankful to the ghost that she never harmed us or hurt us in any way. All that time she was trying to give us a message that she was there. May her soul rest in peace. A long-overdue update:A couple days ago, all residential compounds in Wuhan were sealed off, and no resident has been allowed to exit unless it was absolutely necessary, e.g., medical emergency. I keep walking my dog once a day within the compound. Weather these days has been very nice, so I want to enjoy the sunshine as much as possible. I basically have the whole garden to myself as most people are staying home. Air is much cleaner, and the sky is the bluest I have ever seen. I think it is due to the vehicle ban.I signed up for volunteer in my community twice a week. All I do was going door to door asking whether anybody have cough or fever. We are instructed to communicate with residents with their doors closed so there is limited contact. Therefore, I often have to yell through the door and having residents yelling back at me. I think it would be very comical under different circumstance.With people not being allowed to leave the compound, grocery shopping inevitably became an issue which made people anxious. The community office arranged with local supermarkets to take orders on Wechat and make deliveries to the community office. All residents can pick up their order from the office. However, stores are only taking orders for staple food, vegetables and fresh meat. I can’t find a particular brand of cookies that I liked very much. Yeah, first world problem in a third world country during an epidemic. I know.The fish-net search for potentially sick patient was finished today. Hopefully, everybody who exhibited symptoms have been identified and tested, and the ones with positive results or anormaly in their CT images were admitted to temporary hospitals with more sick patients going to conventional hospitals which had better equipment. Therefore, in theory, there should be nobody in the community with COVID-19. The word is that the quarantine is going to continue for at least 14 more days. If no new case emerge from community, then we know we have gotten this thing under control.______________________________________________________________________________Update: I just got off Wechat with one of my friend. He went grocery shopping at Metro yetsterday. Today, he noticed that Metro had refunded some of his money into his Wechat account. Rumor is that the government was not happy with some stores taking the ‘opportunity’ to raise prices on food and produce, so government officials had a meeting with all the major store chains and ask them to stablize the price. That might be why he got the money back. I am not sure if that is the case everywhere else.————————————————————————————————————Update: I went to a major supermarket for instant noodles and cookies. I saw some people from the government health department in the store. They were not happy that only three cashiers and two weighing stations were staffed and customers must form long queues waiting to be served. They instructed store staff to open up all cashier lines and put in more weighing stations to move customers as quickly as possible to reduce cluster._____________________________________________________________I got up this morning at 8am and went to the grocery store across the street.I found a notice in the lift of my building saying that to contact community office if anybody had fever or persistant dry cough, and the community office will arrange for medical appointment so people do not have to wait in hospitals for hours with hundreds of potentially ill patients. Thankfully, none in my family show any symptoms.I went to the grocery store. It was only a small store so it was already packed with people. It seemed well-prepared stockwise. However, prices on vegetables have gone up. That’s free market I guess. I usually purchase grocery on an app and have it delivered, but that option is not available anymore due to the potential shortage of both supply and manpower. I was told that vegetables were cheaper in some of the major chainstores, but unfortunately I do not live near one.There weren’t many people on streets. However, that is normal during Chinese New Year because the non-locals tend to go back to their hometown for CNY. I only hope they will not spread the disease further.I bought enough vegetables for a couple days’ worth then went home.The disease has ruined many people’s plans. I was planning on taking my mom to the lantern festival at the East Lake. That festival got cancelled with all the other public activities. Family gathering is cancelled. I also bought movie tickets for tomorrow (Jan 25th), and I returned the tickets and got refund due to the epidemic. All movies that were scheduled to show during the CNY are withdrawn from releasing and probably will be release in May.It is a cold and cloudy day, so I will stay in my bed with a good book and tea.

Say a couple in the community had their religious wedding and also a registry office wedding, then if both agree, the Sharia court can rule on the Muslim wedding but not the registry office, but they could offer judgement on the type of divorce and settlement they should both seek for the latter.The question could also ask, “why do builders allow a building adjudicator and expert witnesses to decide their court case?” or “why are large international contract disputes taken to an arbitration panel”.A simple answer to all of this is that in the UK, we wish to get things settled before they clog up the court system and ADR is a great set of processes to do such. In some types of legal dispute there are ADR steps written into the civil procedure rules as pre-action protocols.
