PDF Editor FAQ

Will CPEC harm Pakistan's culture (China is atheist/ Buddhist whereas Pakistan is Islamic)?

*All points mentioned in the answer are my own personal opinions*If we do experience an influx of Chinese culture into the country on a significant enough scale to be noticeable, i hardly believe it would be a unique event in our history.Historically speaking, the territories comprising an independent Pakistan have experienced 5 large Cultural waves, sometimes tied to migration and sometimes not. A Chinese cultural wave would be the 6th one.In the interest of brevity, i’ll only talk about West Pakistan.Partition periodPost 1971 War periodAfghan War periodThe Gulf Workers eraThe Musharraf-PPP eraThe Chinese eraPartitionThe Partition Period saw a massive migration from East Punjab, adjoining territories like Kashmir, Rajastan/Gujarat and the Indian interior like UP/Delhi etc.The Punjabi portion mostly just got absorbed in Pakistani Punjab. The Mohajir community from India’s interior had a pretty significant impact on Pakistan in terms of migration. They boasted significant educational achievements, fluency in Urdu/English, familiarity with British Colonial government institutions, were often of the wealthy business class and were ideologically motivated by the idea of Pakistan.Their settlement concentrations in Karachi changed Pakistan a lot. It jump started Karachi’s economic rise as the new migrants occupied positions of government, business and social influence in their adopted country. It also changed the social and political dynamic of Sindh a lot.The new migrants weakened Pakistan’s traditional clan, tribal and caste links. Basically, the old societal links which were based on family trees and ties that spanned hundreds of years into the past were slowly weakened with the arrival of new migrants as the new migrants had no old ancestral ties to their adopted country and this shifted political and economic patronage systems away from clan and caste based loyalty towards a somewhat more merit driven system as what you managed to achieve in your life and your worth as a person is what gave you value. Not who you personally knew or were related to by blood. Karachi’s business and entrepreneurial style were dominated by the new migrants, their higher education and merit driven system and propelled their economic rise and the city’s economic rise over the old systems of family based businesses and property ownership. This was in no way a complete process. Sindh’s old feudal landlords and old generations still held a major sway over the politics of the province. But there was no doubt they had challengers amidst their fold now in the form of Indian Muslim migrants who acted as upstarts and challenged the traditional status quo within the confines of Karachi’s urban environment.Post 1971 War periodThe post 71 war period saw the influx of Bengali residents to Pakistan. This consisted of West Pakistanis who were settled in East Pakistan and East Pakistanis of Bengali ethnicity who wished to settle in West Pakistan.Similar to the Indian Muslims from UP/Lucknow/Delhi etc, a lot of the Bengali migrants were also quite well educated and created significant colonies and housing areas in Karachi which exist even today. Bengali also became one of the languages of Karachi and it is taught in a few educational institutes even today (although as generations passed, Urdu seems to have become the adopted language of Bengali residents in Karachi). The Bengali community actually began to become so dominant in Karachi that then PM Bhutto began to fear their growing power (he had always been vary of Bengalis, he was the one who refused to participate in the assemblies that Sheikh Mujeeb won fair and square in the 1970 elections). PM Bhutto implemented measures to curb Bengali influx into Pakistan which ignited a diplomatic row with Bangladesh and an internal political row as well, since Pakistani public WANTED Bengalis to have the right to settle in Pakistan if they chose to (halting migration from an Islamic country has been a taboo subject in Pakistan up until 2014–15).In any case, the impact of Bengali migration to Pakistan, mostly to Karachi initially, furthered the socio-economic changes initiated by the 1947 migration of Urdu speaking mohajirs from India into Pakistan. The urban city centers became more economically important, particularly Karachi, since migrants mostly settled in the cities. Bengali language made landfall in southern Pakistan, but it has fallen under the shadow of the English-Urdu hegemony in recent times. Old clan, tribe and caste loyalties continued to be weakened. There is also a curious case of how the 1947 Mohajir and 1971 Bengal migrants influenced the political culture of Pakistan.Normally, provincial locals such as the Baloch in Balochistan, the Sindhis in Sindh and so on pushed for a loose center with provincial governments having strong autonomy. The urban parties with migrant voter banks voted more for a strong center that empowered district, municipal and city mayoral offices. The arrival and setting up of migrant communities in Pakistan that settled in the urban areas lead to the phenomena of urban parties like the MQM (it could be argued that the PTI is also an urban party given their electoral success in cities across Pakistan back in 2013) which favored a strong center. The MQM was a pretty close ally of the Presidential system put in place by President Musharraf .Basically, the migrant communities settled in urban areas vote for strong central governments that will offset the power of the provincial parties whose voters outnumber urban residents. The Afghan waveThe Afghan war bought with it the millions of Afghan refugees who significantly changed the social, political and economic landscape of Pakistan. They had more similarities with the East Punjab migrants who came to Pakistan during Partition in that they were : Mostly refugees of violence, were lowly educated laborers and village folk, absorbed into their ethnic group present in Pakistan. But that’s where the similarities ended. The Afghan wave bought with it a flood of weapons, drugs, violence and religious conservatism. Pakistani society before the 1980s had largely been free of our current Kalashnikov culture and drug use but these have become a defining reality of our present due to the large Afghan migrant wave that came and continued to come from the 1980s till 2017 today.Only now has the border begun to be regulated and Afghan refugees have begun to go home.It should be noted that some of the Afghan refugees being deported actually qualify for Pakistani citizenship as they have lived here long enough to earn it and some were even born in Pakistan. The GoP might be violating certain legal rights in the name of security…but this is nothing new in Pakistan. The Afghan refugees were mostly low skilled laborers who settled in “Katchi abadis” (informal settlements) outside major cities. These settlements turned into little more than ghettos due to neglect from government authorities. And this in turn, made them into breeding grounds of extremism and violence. There is also a more difficult to acknowledge fact: The presence of nearly millions of conservative Afghan young men in the urban environments of the city made quiet a lot of public spaces inaccessible to women.A lot of us have seen the black and white pictures of Pakistan back in the 60s and 70s where it would be quiet common to see white hippies roaming the beaches, cities, rural areas and so on with complete freedom. One could also find Pakistani women riding bikes in city centers to go to cinemas. While such spaces still exist for women in Pakistan, i would be remiss if i pretended like those aren’t just posh localities or well developed, secure, liberal areas. There was a subtle but deliberate shift in the gender balance of public spaces. (over population and increasing conservatism are also culprits here)I’m gonna push this point a bit further and say that i have concerns about how much access to some public areas women will have in Europe when those areas become concentrated with migrants.Moving on, it should also be pointed out that the migrant wave from Afghanistan also weakened traditional tribal society in the Pashtun tribal belts although this is debatable. It can be argued that the incoming Afghans had strong tribal ties to the Pakistani portions of their ties and thus, the social cohesion of Pakistan’s Pashtun tribal belt remained unaffected.Or alternatively, it could be argued that the rise of the Taliban was more responsible for the breakdown of tribal bonds as the Taliban fought intensely with local jirgas and targeted several tribal jirga members. In any case, an impact was made on Pakistani society that went on for nearly 3 decades from the 1980s till the 2010s. Not all of it was negative. Afghans are a hardworking bunch of people and they set up several businesses and small trades in Pakistan as well as acted as cheap labor for construction booms in Pakistan. But due to their lower educational status and economic power compared to say the Urdu speaking Mohajirs and the Bengali mohajirs, they were prone to a lot of crime waves and conservatism that adversely impacted Pakistani society.Iran on the other hand, managed to avoid a lot of these negative impacts of hosting Afghan refugees due to her strict policy on regulating and controlling refugee populations and they did not suffer any adverse consequences as a result. More on that here:Usama Ahmad's answer to How did France and Belgium fail so miserably in integrating Muslim migrants, while UK, Germany, and Sweden did way better? The Gulf Workers eraThis period coincided roughly with the Afghan wave. In the 1970s, Pakistani workers began moving to the Gulf to participate in the construction boom taking place in the Arab countries that had recently discovered oil. While a common tendency is to think that all of the workers went to the Gulf, quiet a few of them went to countries like Libya and Iraq as well. The Gulf workers dont represent a migration wave in the sense that they were foreigners to our country when they returned to Pakistan. But the laborers and workers in the Gulf bought back with them several Arab customs and cultural practices as well as religious beliefs that had beforehand been absent from Pakistan. This also coincided with General Zia’s Islamization program to introduce religious legislation into the constitution, open up Pakistan to Gulf funded Madarassahs and religious bodies that promoted ultra conservative Salafi Islam and began to light the first embers of bloody religious and sectarian violence in the country.Over the decades, as those workers returned to home towns and villages after working stints in the Gulf, they bought back Niqabs, the beards, the Arabic of the Gulf into Pakistan. And over a process of 3 decades, slowly changed the social and political landscape of Pakistan into the highly conservative country we find today. This cultural wave of Gulf Wahhabism was a mix of Gulf funding for madrassahs, Pakistanis working in the Gulf and bringing back their customs with them, Islamization programs by a military dictator. But they all together represent a distinct and unique cultural and social wave that heavily changed our society. The Musharraf-PPP era : The Indian waveThe Musharraf-PPP era represents the first decade of the 21st century and the era where mass media came to Pakistan. And oh boy, did it represent a unique culture wave of it’s own.Pakistan in the 90s had very little media presence. We grew up watching government sanctioned slap stick comedies like Teen Batta Teen, army dramas like Alpha Bravo Charlies or whatever PTV dramas were on after the evening news. It was quiet common to see TV show adverts peppered with official transmissions from PTV about agricultural announcements (“Kissan Kashtkaro ke naam, aham pegham” Important announcement for all farmers). But once Musharraf opened up the mass media for private consumption and private markets, we had an explosion in socio-cultural affairs.Bollywood music, dramas and films flooded the markets or Bollywood influenced art was everywhere. Our own indigenous and local film and drama scene went into overdrive. We replaced old Punjabi village gangster stuff with high production stuff like Khuda Ke Liye, Waar and so one.And it just wasn’t Bollywood. Turkish dramas too gained a wide reception in Pakistan with stuff like Mera Sultan but Turkish influence was nowhere near as widespread as Indian cultural influence in Pakistan during the Mass Media boom of the 2000–2012 period. We also began to have a more relaxed attitude towards censorship standards and women’s clothing. Both men’s and women’s clothing styles became more liberal in fashion shows and on TV and this was reflected in real life as well in what people wore on the street. This is in no way as widespread as it would be in a western, developed country like say France but it was a seismic shift for a conservative country like Pakistan. But we still have a lot of thorny issues around society’s mindset towards what a woman wears in Public that we have to deal with.Nevertheless, the decade saw a massive influx of foreign culture into Pakistan, in particular Indian culture and Bollywood. One can do long debates about the good and bad aspects of this. I can give a strictly personal opinion:I think Pakistanis became somewhat more tolerant of other religions like Hinduism, Sikhs etc through exposure to this Bollywood wave. Celebrating stuff like Holi with the Hindu community, welcoming of Sikh pilgrims to Pakistan etc were things that were assisted due to mass media propagating Indian cultural and artistic products in Pakistan and increasing cultural ties between India and Pakistan during the 2000–2012 period.TV channels like Geo etc had a very pro-democratic feel to them and their employees and journalists would often attend workshops and media events in India and would bring back a positive viewpoint of India through their travels. Our films and dramas also began to show some Bollywood influence as item numbers and some more provocative scenes became pretty socially and culturally acceptable to Pakistani audiences who had become used to them thanks to Bollywood being everywhere. Movies like 3 Idiots etc also helped trigger debates about social issues in Pakistan. But there were negatives too. We also imported some of the negative aspects of Bollywood in our youth like certain aspects of the Toxic masculinity prevalent in the Masala type Bollywood movies and over sexualisation of women.Indian soft power in the country through mass media and mass broadcasting, Bollywood influx and cultural exchanges continue well into the second decade and only came to an end in 2014 after the BJP came to power and relations between both countries nose dived, terror attacks took place, Pakistani actors and media people were boycotted in India and cultural ties became frayed as the borders frayed up again and religious tensions increased in both countries. The Indian wave ended somewhere around 2015 by which time, the national security apparatus had begun their own strong media campaigns to convey their influence over the local population to counter the growing Indian soft power in the country. The mood of both countries also became more militaristic and confrontational to each other and the cultural ties slowly died off in this time. Which brings us to the 6th wave.Enter the Dragon: The Chinese cultural waveI’ve written some of the basic facts about the Chinese cultural influx into Pakistan in another answer here:Usama Ahmad's answer to Where do you see Pakistan in 2030?Basically, we will see a significant Chinese expat community build up in the country who will bring their own culture here. Their media will also begin major broadcasts, translated to local languages once the CPEC fiber optic projects begin to start operation. And some of their major businesses are making pretty significant inroads into the country and their products, brands and marketing will become a part of the national business landscape. And we will see some Chinese cultural practices like New Years fireworks, some of their architecture, food, clothing and Tv shows/films make inroads in the country. Pakistan already has a rapidly growing number of Chinese language students in Confucian institutes which have such a huge number of applicants they have to run multiple classes a day to cater to all of their Pakistani students. Chinese e-commerce products, WeChat and other products will also make inroads in the country. But the reports about Pakistan being colonized by China are greatly exaggerated.I’m gonna share a certain insight which you’ll have to take my word for: I think both the governments of China and Pakistan are trying to keep the number of Chinese citizens in Pakistan at a minimum.I read a few Chinese news papers and back when 2 Chinese citizens, allegedly working for a Christian missionary organization were murdered in Quetta, there was a large hew and cry in China with citizens demanding that the Chinese government send troops to Pakistan to secure Chinese citizens, an outcome the Chinese government is least interested in for now. And the fact that Chinese citizens working for a Christian missionary organization (again, allegedly) managed to somehow make their way from China to Pakistan by deceiving Visa authorities on both ends was also quite a shock for both Pakistani and Chinese authorities. The Chinese government has a responsibility to their citizen’s safety and it’s evident when you see the great lengths to which China went to evacuate her citizens from Libya and Yemen etc. Similarly, Pakistan has a responsibility to protect Chinese citizens in their territory and that’s evident from the enormous investments in security the country is making to secure Chinese engineers and workers on CPEC.Both nations know that the more Chinese citizens there are, the greater the risk of them being targeted by terror outfits and the more chances there will be of diplomatic rows and internal pressures to react.Which is why the governments of both countries might be implementing some pretty strict visa rules for travel and living in Pakistan. Even now, the ministry of Interior in Pakistan is passing out regulations that Chinese citizens notify their handlers of their internal movements in the country and otherwise remain restricted to safe, secure zones for their safety. These are tough conditions to meet, so i would imagine not a lot of Chinese citizens might want to move here because of that. And those that come will probably be as part of a temporary visit to work as part of some Chinese firm or company working on CPEC. It’s quite possible that both the Chinese and Pakistani governments consider a large Chinese presence in Pakistan a diplomatic/security liability for both states and might want to avoid this. Which is why we are currently seeing the beginning of tighter visa regimes by both governments. But let’s say i’m wrong and assume that a large number of Chinese citizens do come to Pakistan and settle here.In that case, i would assume it would result in a similar effect that we saw in the Indian Mohajir migrations back in 1947 from UP/Lucknow/Delhi area and the Bengali migrations after 71.The Chinese community would form large, successful business and enterprenurial class in areas like Lahore and Islamabad/Rawalpindi (similar to the Mohajirs and Seths in Pakistani business community). The Chinese government and communities have so far developed their strongest ties to the Punjab province and the Punjab government which is ruled by the PML-N party. The PML-N has a history of being backed by big businesses operating in Punjab and they have a focus on urban development these days. The Chinese community would be mostly urban based and they are expected to form the forefront of CPEC’s business investments in Pakistan. They are also expected to become heavily involved in the agricultural sector of Pakistan. Both of these economic sectors are heavily tied into the PML-N's vote bank politics and patronage systems. The PML-N Chief Minister in Punjab, Shahbaz Sharif, also has perhaps the best relationship among all of our political class with the Chinese government who have returned the warmth by terming fast completion projects as operating on "Punjab Speed", a nod to the CM's strong support and supervision of Chinese projects in Pakistan. There’s no reason to believe that the Chinese expats will remain restricted to Lahore and Islamabad/Pindi. These urban areas just offer the most safe, developed environs for expats with good access to the local governments. Smaller cantonments and communities in other areas with CPEC opportunities, other cities like Karachi and Gwadar etc will also have Chinese communities but i doubt they will grow to the level we might see in Lahore-Rawalpindi-Islamabad.The impact of their migrations will again closely match what we saw in the Urdu speaking Mohajir communities in 47 and the Bengali community in 71. More urban oriented political parties, weakened clan and tribal links, a push for a stronger central and federal government.I already talked about how Pakistan is becoming more authoritarian in nature in this answer:Usama Ahmad's answer to Where do you see Pakistan in 2030?The entry of Chinese expats means that they will bring with them their political beliefs and this would go in favor of the PML-N which has a somewhat one-party, authoritarian, economic development focused platform. Our society will also be confronted with the specter of Chinese women going about their everyday business in public spaces, wearing clothes our everyday conservative populace might not be used to. Pakistan has a growing social progress movement aimed at reclaiming public space for women. This will gain momentum as the government will have to get involved in ensuring that women can travel across the city freely and without hindrance due to the presence of Chinese citizens in the country. The same goes for Chinese customs and Chinese atheism. Our exposure to Chinese people who are atheists and their foreign culture will kickstart a debate or a social issue where we accept the reality of people who are atheists and have foreign customs. The government again, will have to ensure that everyone plays nice with each other and our populace will learn to live with people who are of a different religion and custom than them.Frankly speaking, these are all good things. I’ve noticed that societies become more xenophobic and close minded the more they are isolated. Pakistan has a long history of hosting and experiencing foreigners and foreign cultural waves. We need to keep that up rather than become a hermit kingdom. The presence of Chinese woman who are free and independent, openly reclaiming public spaces for women will help Pakistani women as well. Pakistani women will benefit from social progress movements in Pakistan that seek to make Pakistani cities and public space women friendly and these social progress movements will receive a big boost from the presence of Chinese women. The presence of Chinese customs, culture and beliefs will slowly permeate in our society. It won’t change who we are. It’ll just open up our minds to the diversity of the world around us.Additional notesI’ll end this with the bane of all Quora answers: Personal experience and anecdotes.I’ve worked with Chinese engineers for more than 3 years now. We have worked long nights together through some stressful situations. Ate meals together and explored Pakistani cities together. Played football together in the evenings when the heat is less.We have never had any issues with the Chinese ever. Chinese people are some of the best at integrating, no matter what situation or country you put them in. Their engineers can work one day in Saudi Arabia, one day in India, one day in America and one day in Europe and act like it was nothing. Another good thing about them is that they live among us rather than sealing themselves off in isolated compounds like some westerners do in Saudi Arabia. Chinese people will walk, shop, eat at the same places as Pakistanis which means that when the government improves city amenities for them, Pakistanis will benefit from it as well.Their presence in Pakistan will hardly ever cross 50,000 at most and i would be very surprised if it goes above that. There just isn’t the willingness of either government to accommodate more than that or enough economic activity to absorb more than that. The Chinese government wont let too many Chinese into Pakistan out of fear that attacks on them could promote a severe backlash among the Chinese public back home and force pressure on Chinese government. Pakistan also doesn’t want too many either as the security costs and government capacity to provide a secure and productive environment to Chinese citizens in Pakistan would be too strained. Both countries value their diplomatic ties too much to allow security threats to Chinese citizens in Pakistan from straining the relationship. It’s a hard fact that migrant buildups of foreign citizens in a country can strain relationships between governments. Government to Government interaction instead becomes defined more by how citizens of the expat community are treated rather than what mutually beneficial relationship both governments can develop. Normally this tends to happen once an expat community crosses the half a million or million mark, depending on host nations population and compatibility of the cultures of host and destination countries. Good examples of such strain might be Bangladeshi migrants going illegally to Indian Bengal which has strained relations between both countries. Or Turkish-German migrant issues causing diplomatic tension. (i welcome corrections here).ConclusionSo to conclude:Pakistan’s culture and society have been consistently undergoing massive changes since 1947. We have undergone change after change in social and cultural mindsets either across the entire nation or in large regional sections. These socio-cultural changes have been through migration, returning labor, foreign funding or the onset of mass media and mass linkages. So the original 47 cultural landscape has long been changed almost 6 times till now. This is part and parcel with out historical and geographical heritage as a crossing point between civilizations. No big deal, its a part of national existence and heritage. This might be difficult for a country that hasnt experienced numerous large scale migrations or social changes across it’s territories, but for us Pakistanis: We are used to it. Its part of our identity and what defines us.The Chinese expat community is unlikely to cross 50,000 and i would be very surprised if it does. This is due to both governments not wanting to put too many Chinese citizens in harms way as it would create undue pressure on both governments. Such a small expat community will impact culture in a few cities maybe, and not in a massive way even. Nothing more.Even if it does cross the 50,000 mark, the effects will be similar to what we saw in the Urdu speaking Mohajir community and Bengali community of migrants. Urban communities centered around Lahore and Islamabad/Rawalpindi, forming a business class, probably backing the PML-N (the ones who become citizens and voters that is), bringing Chinese language to the cities they settle in similar to how Lucknow Urdu and Bengali found homes in Karachi and continuing the current development trend of mass development in urban areas with lower priority for rural areas. The push for a strong centralized government with less autonomy for provinces will gain a boost from Chinese communities whose political dynamics will favor this, similar to how we saw with the Bengali and Mohajir migrations. Might even see the post of Mayor gain growing political clout as Lahore, Islamabad, Pindi begin to host more Chinese migrants. We’ve adopted a few traits from each of the 5 waves i mentioned preceding the current Chinese wave. Some of them positive (Urban development, entrepreneurial business class challenging the land owning, feudal class, higher educated foreign migrants boosting local economies). And some of them negative (conservatism, violence, law and order problems). The Chinese migration wave would mostly skew towards the positive. Pakistani women would take advantage of the freedom afforded to Chinese women in the cities to make their presence known in public spheres as well. Urban residents will benefit from the city improvements made for Chinese citizens. Our society will be exposed to a wider variety of religious beliefs, similar to how the Musharraf-PPP era bought us into greater contact with Sikh and Hindu beliefs. We’re a pretty new nation with a somewhat hybrid existence. The Chinese wave will be one more shade of color in our history of existence as a nation state. Who knows. Maybe in the future we will see an Iranian wave by 2025. And a Russian wave by 2035. This is just what being a part of Pakistan is all about.

Which State in the U.S. has the best hamburgers?

Bless Your Heart Burgers | David L. ReamerThese days it's difficult NOT to find yourself in the general vicinity of an outstanding burger. Americans' love of all forms of beef between buns has grown so passionate that it seems like every restaurant that opens feels compelled to put a burger on its menu. That's fantastic and all, but there are times when some $18 chef-driven creation (even if it tastes incredible) just won't do and you want something crafted in a place that lives and breathes ground meat. In short, you want a burger joint. The restaurants featured on this list make burgers the unquestioned stars of the show. You'll find some of the gems chosen by our national burger critic Kevin Alexander for his epic ranking of America's best burgers, and you'll also meet some other places that consistently excel at the burger game. Just kidding, it's pretty much impossible to screw this up. -- MLKevin Alexander/ThrillistFred's Meat & BreadAtlanta, GeorgiaTo be fair, Fred's offers up a lot of "meat and bread" options beyond its burger, but the Burger Stack here is the undeniable star and the best reason to visit Atlanta's popular Krog Street Market. Atlanta's best burger tastes, as our national burger critic put it, "like a grilled cheese with meat inside it," with bread-and-butter pickles punctuating the richness and a sesame seed bun doing an admirable job attempting to contain all the cheesy, greasy protein. Once you've had it you may find yourself wanting to return to try the cheesesteak or the chicken Parm, but odds are strong to quite strong you'll buckle in the heat of the moment and have another go round with the Burger Stack. -- MLSara Norris/ThrillistGabby's Burgers & FriesNashville, TennesseeOpened by a restaurant vet who wanted to spend a little more time with his family, Gabby's thankfully also spends some time cranking out some of Nashville's finest burgers, with the signature Gabby consisting of two gloriously cheesed up patties nestled within a pillowy bun (though our resident critic is partial to the more understated, single-patty Seamus). If you're the sort of person who refuses to be contained by such binary options, there's a whole swath of burger creations on their password-protected "Secret Menu," containing more elaborate burger artistry conceived by regulars and also famous people like Michael Symon. Whether that’s Medicare-defrauding nail salons, or in the case of Gilbert’s, flame-broiled hamburgers. This spot tucked in a Broward County strip mall is a family-run Florida gem, where mom greets you at the register with something witty and occasionally derogatory, while her son works the grill in the back. On that grill you’ll find big half-pound certified Angus patties, billowing smoke into the Harbor Shops parking lot, and daring everyone at the Orangetheory next door to come negate their workout. The basic LTO is all you need here, as the meat seasoning and expert grilling speak for themselves. But if you wanna get fancy, the crumbled blue cheese burger ain’t bad. Even vegetarians love this place, as it has, as one vegetarian told me, “the only portobello mushroom burger I’ve had that actually tastes good.” The fries are all hand cut, and the zany desserts are almost as much of a draw as the meat, beckoning to diners with pretzel-and-fudge-topped cookies from a display case next to the always-busy line. -- Matt MeltzerCourtesy of Grill MarksGrill MarksGreenville, South CarolinaA friend of mine who lives in Greenville sent me a Grill Marks Instagram post touting what can only be described as the greatest cultural contribution to ever come out of South Carolina: the Jägermeister milkshake. By the time I got around to visiting, it was sadly off the menu. And boy am I glad it was. Because that shake probably would have filled me to the point I’d never have tried the burgers, and those are the real stars of the show. They’re all chopped certified Angus beef, not ground, so the texture of the patty is fuller, richer, meatier. And they start at $6.79 (for a measly 4 bucks you can upgrade to a DeBragga New York Butcher dry-aged patty, rendering toppings needless). The creations are pretty spectacular, ranging from the French Connection with caramelized onions, roasted garlic, Brie, and cabernet ketchup, to the Hot Mess, which adds a hot dog to two patties. But the best hamburger I’ve had anywhere, ever, is the Café Au Poivre, a coffee-and-peppercorn-crusted patty topped with cremini mushrooms and au poivre sauce. It’s as close to putting a perfect steak dinner on a bun as I’ve ever seen. And made me completely forget about the lack of Jäger shakes. -- MMCrystal LudwickGrind Burger KitchenLouisville, KentuckyLiz and Jesse Huot are among the many restaurant owners across the country who translated a food truck with a rabid following into a brick-and-mortar establishment with a still-rabid following and far less likelihood of suffering a flat tire. But my SECOND most visceral memory is the first time I took a bite of their burger, which at first glance looks like nothing more than your classic diner double adorned with the requisite vegetation, but upon further review has that magical alchemy of melty cheese, glutenous bun and perfectly seasoned patties that only the greats possess.
