PDF Editor FAQ

Should I feel obliged to help my broke parents?

I’ve been that son. It wasn’t fun.I’ll spare you the background, but it cost me roughly ten years of my earning life, and maybe five years on the mortgage ladder, and when I moved to a job that was paying far better, my father was still ignoring advice and going down the same route building up debt. I funded him a time or two, and my mother ended up without her savings. It took him staring a triple heart bypass in the face to get him to acknowledge what I was telling him that he needed to go to a debt management charity, and once he did that the pressure was off, but he defaulted on a huge swathe of debt to traditional lenders (banks, credit cards etc).I’ve come to the conclusion that the money I gave him was time out of my life - that’s early pension contributions, mortgage payments, savings, and holidays I could have had. He’s paid back recent borrowings now he’s fiscally settled, but I’m not getting back the ten years of illegally low wages I had when I worked for him (and he borrowed most of that back), and I’m not getting back those years when I could have earned properly. My advice is that you can’t allow their debt to be yours. You also never lend what you cannot afford to lose. When you start on a mortgage or a pension, the more you can throw at it in the first days, the better you are later - think in terms of compound interest. If you do decide to do anything like this, and based on your comments I hope you call an end to throwing good money after bad, I would stick some stipulations in.“I can only afford to lend you X amount. No more. I’m not taking out debt to perpetuate your cycle of fiscal mismanagement, and I am not lending you money without having a say in how it’s dealt with, or without seeing all your other debt and outgoings. The amount of X comes with these conditions. (cut out drinking/take debt management classes/whatever). It will be repaid at time Y. Failure to adhere to these conditions means that there will be no extensions.”Something like that. Their previous attempts at managing their money failed, and if they expect you to hand over anything, let alone go into debt, you need to have a say in this because it’s your life and your money. Put it this way, if your fortunes change and you need fiscal help, would you expect them to be willing to help?In my case, my father wasn’t manipulative - just bad with money and wouldn’t give up on trying to make things work. He’s out of it now, as am I, but my life is several years behind schedule and my pension’s looking crap. Avoid that if you can. It’s your life, not theirs. It’s their life, not yours.

What is the highest monthly pay a teacher gets that you have heard of worldwide?

There is a big range. My answers are for the US. My answers are annual. There is not really a good way to tell you monthly and be objective because there are so many variables; FSA, Health insurance choices, pension contributions and 9 or 12 month. My relatives and friends in the Chicago suburbs make 80-100k per year masters degree and 10-20 years in. They also coach and such. I am 5 years in, Northern Wisconsin and I will be at or around 35k for the forseeable future. No increases in sight for my district or any nearby district. But at least I don't have to wait until 67 to collect my pension like they do in Illinois.I moved away from Northern Arizona because I was looking at 25k or so per year there. If you live somewhere touristy expect lower pay. Somewhere like the wealthy suburbs of a big city expect compensation 10-20% below that of somebody with equal education and experience in the private sector. In my district we all have second jobs. Lots of science teachers work in labs or natural resources. The shop teachers have construction businesses. I do computer repair, cut trees and work at a bar in the city during the summer. This is the salary schedule for a high paying district in Illinois. It starts on page 41.http://www.cusd200.org/cms/lib7/IL01001538/Centricity/Domain/29/Contract%202015-17%20FINAL.%20SIGNATUREdocx.pdfThis is a district in rural Wisconsin.http://www.ashland.k12.or.us/Files/LICENSED%20SALARY%20SCHEDULE%202012-13.pdfIn the US teacher salaries are public record. You may even be able to google names and find the exact information pretty easily.

Why do you think we should give Narendra Modi one more term?

Instead of declaring a boolean answer I would like to revisit the whole scenario, performance, future of the country and then decide what should be the answer of above question.Narendra Modi came to power with an overwhelming majority, with a lot of expectations. Because of which there is constant evaluation and monitoring of work done by people and media which I did not see earlier so actively. One thing to understand is you cannot make everyone happy and still progress as a country. You have to take decisions which people may not like but will do good in future.Performance of the government:Starting with foreign policy, India's image has improved globally. We now have a far more decisive government with taking stands like In Doklam and OBOR. Surgical strike in Myanmar and Pok have helped break the identity of soft nation who would always depend on USA's opinion for retaliation. In my lifetime, I have not seen a minister visiting a foreign land, digging graves to search fellow Indians and bring mortal remains back home. Long awaited 123 deal was signed. Border agreement bill with Bangladesh was passed. With Xi Jinping given ultimate power in China, it is in our interest for us to have a strong leader and strong government. I will give 9 out of 10.Social welfare schemes: Ujjwala yojna in my view is the best of all which has provided clean fuel to rural women. GiveitUp campaign was a truely positive and enthusiastic where people could contribute a little. PrimeMinister health and life insurance and Atal pension started with a motive to remove anti poor tag, however they slowed down in the later phase and not much interest shown in them by people. Jandhan yojna was a big success.Rural electricity coverage achieved great targets and we are almost about to complete electrification of 18k villages which were living in dark since 1947. We are producing a lot more electricity. Saubhagya Yojna will ensure electricity in remaining 4 Crore houses of india. Regarding power distribution , I contradict claims made by the government. Still many discoms are facing major crisis and rural areas are not getting that much electricity as claimed. The recently introduced Modicare does not seem convincing. Firstly its a socialist move and secondly It does not look like government can provide that much budget for half population. Most successful plan was Swachcha Bharat. In the first year over 4 lakh seperate toilets were built for girls in Schools. Now 76% (36% in 2014) of Indian houses have a toilet. Swachchta ranking increased competition among cities which if continued will bear fruits in future. Marks 7 out of 10.Infrastructure and transport: Nitin Gadkari is doing a phenomenal job in this sector. Along with him Piyush goyal and Suresh Prabhu have done well in Railways( Gowda was pathetic). Many highways expressways projects have been started, stalled work restarted. Many new ports are announced. Waterways bill cleared the way for goods transport on water. Bullet train is a great initiative. Major metro projects were announced in major cities. Namani Gange is behind schedule and not much progress seen till now. Railways has done quite well. After a long time accidents/year were less than 100. Unmmaned crossing will be a thing of past very soon. Track electrification, Renewel, solar energy usage, LED lights at station, cleaniness, prompt response on twitter all these things provide a bright future of railways. Still timings and food facilities are haunting. This could not improve much. Smart city project can be marked as average only as most project are in progress and state govt are more responsible for them. Long awaited reforms were taken in Airline industry which is good. 8.5 out of 10.Economy- started on good note, went down after demonetisation and back on track recently. Most controversial decision was demonetisation. People suffered, banks suffured and jobs were lost. No doubt about the short term losses and about gains , it is in the future's stomach. Poor and middle class people applauded, but now general perception is nothing much could be gained by the move atleast as of now. GST was also a long awaited reform. Though poorly implemented and still needs improvement, Modi will be lauded for Gst and bankruptcy code in future. Gold bond schemes was a failure. Many socialist moves were taken. land bill was put forward aggresively but could not be passed in RS. Make In India cannot do much progress without Land bill. My biggest disappointment is in 4 years not a single public entity was privatised. Government's job is to govern not to run hotels , banks and airlines. Improved Ratings and ease of doing business rankings shows the efforts made. Serious efforts towards financial inclusion were made and government reveneus have gone up. Agriculture has been given importance in recent budget but I think we need to move people out of agriculture. We have a huge population dependent on uncertain profession like this which is not good and needs to be changed. Government was able to manage finances and meet fiscal deficit targets . 7 out of 10.law and order, Security: except Uri and Pathankot , no major attacks were witnessed. Anti Naxal operations though lacking a systematic strategy, were able to weaken the maoists. Many suspected NGOs were banned. Demonetisation made many naxalites surrender. Army has been given free hand in Kashmir.( partly successful). Opposition generally make claims of rising intolerance and communal tensions but I feel most incidents as hyped. Every killing is condemnable. However opposition is trying hard to gain political milaege from dead bodies. Akhlaq was killed under SP rule, Kalburgi under Congress, then also Modi was blamed. Drunk man throwing stones at church was considered as a sign of rising intolerance. Despite all these claims we did not see any major riots. Unlike MMS rule where Assam and Mujjafarnagar are not too old. 8 out of 10.Education and Skill development: No major improvements in this area. Some steps have been taken to make IITS, IIMS autonomous but that will take time. New institutes were announced but thats not a new thing. Skill development was mostly on paper. 5 out of 10.Coming to the overall picture, if we go back to 2014 and compare with the promises made, we will be disappointed because a nation cannot be transformed in 5 years by anyone left alone Modi. Thats a practical thought. If you ask me:Is Modi perfect? - No. nobody is.Has he done better than UPA- Yes. Corruption charges, policy paralysis, unnecessary interference from coilition partners were not witnessed. When I look at the alternatives, Modi seems the best option.Rahul Gandhi- nowhere near Modi in popularity, also not proven a good leader. Why his family can work only as PM and not as a CM or a minister. Why not he perform at lower level and then aim for PM. Thats a blot on our democracy. When Prashant Kishore asked to declare Rahul as CM candidate of UP , I was happy and regarded that as a major reform in our democracy. However Congress denied. Many people in quora states that he has improved and changed now but I do not feel so. Leave aside his mistakes and goof ups, he is not even clear about policy making. Some examples:he claims if Congress is voted to power they will discard EVM. Sombody please tell him that if they come to power then how will they question the mandate.he criticises Modi govt to charge 5%, 12% GST on restaurents, various commodities and other day he claims he will go for one GST rate which in my view will be around 18 %. how both things are possible.( PS I am in favour of Single rate).major statements he is making lacks vision. he will provide reservations to Patidars in Gujrat, jats in Haryana, Special status to AP, loan waiver to farmers and whatver other people demands. Its all about trying to appease people and forget about development of the nation.Mamta Banerjee- only hold in WB. Known for minority appeasement because of which Congress was rejected.Kejriwal: outside Delhi he is hardly left with many supporters.Apart from that regional leaders are hopless and will not do anything apart from casteism. So the answer is … If not Modi then who??Edit:Some other initiatives which I missed:OROP - long awaited demand of army personnels was met and all major demands were accepted.DBT - this is also a major change in progress. If we achieve this, then gone will be the days where 85 % of poor's money was looted by middlemen. Many ghosts Rashan cards, teachers , LPG beneficiaries were identified. Common people may face some issues but it is in our interest.MP Model village plan- total failure. our MPs were not serious enough for this plan.Triple Talaq bill- finally a govt had guts to undo the ShahBano injustice. Though blocked in RS, I am expecting this bill to pass in near future. Fanatics , people will oppose but we must take decisions in favour of our countrymen.Edit 2:Extremely disappointed with the ST/SC act brought by Central govt to overturn SC decision.
