A2A.There are a number of things Harvard does not want to see in your application.An essay about how it is your lifelong dream to attend Yale. (Yes, it happens. People write a ‘standard’ essay and then forget to change the name of the school!)An essay with grammatical mistakes.An essay that is formulaic / cookie-cutter.An essay that is not personal, and doesn’t allow the reader to get a feel for you as a person, what motivates you, what your passions are, etc.A long list of meaningless extracurriculars; i.e. clubs you joined but didn’t really participate in but rather just joined and maybe attended a few meetings.Extracurriculars that are clearly done just for the purpose of making your college applications look better.Letters of recommendation from people who do not actually know you well; a LOR from your congressman or from a celebrity is meaningless unless that person knows you well in an academic or professional capacity, and those sorts of letters will hurt your application as they take the place of a letter from someone who can actually add meaningful information or lend a unique perspective to your application.A list of awards that includes awards from middle school (aka junior high school) or from (gasp) elementary school, unless those awards were in national or international competitions.Exaggerations or false claims about your experiences or awards or extracurriculars.Overuse of the thesaurus; it’s easy to tell when someone uses the thesaurus to try to make their essay sound more sophisticated by substituting words they aren’t familiar with for words that would work just fine!Nonsensical statements. My favorite? An essay that started with the sentence: “The impact of video games on violent behavior has been a controversial topic for many centuries.”

I hope this helps:You have all A’s but you only took 2 AP classes. Your strength of schedule was a little bit weak.Your letters of recommendations don’t say you are the best student in AP Physics in 40 years (or even one of the better students in your class) so not too much “class” here either.Your SAT is a 1300 and you’re applying for computer science and lots of luck with that endeavor at an Ivy.You volunteered at a shelter overseas and they know this is a common ploy to pad the resume or in culinary terms Pad Thai. (A joke guys). I love Pad Thai.Your best activity was being a service worker and you have one activity. You’re going to now light it up at Harvard and engage in all they have to offer.Your first year you had a 2.0 GPA, but you did pass go? But the admissions office probably won’t let you go in their eyes. They can take someone who has history of exceptional work.Lots of typos on the resume. A big no-no and you know the “type.”They look you up on social media and you have many posts that are completely offensive to others. You’ll be on the defensive here for sure.You want to major in engineering, but have no experience or clubs related to the major and this is a major mistake. The Cornell admissions director covered this at a seminar on how to get with three sample students and the one with perfect GPA and 1580 SAT was rejected on this reason. Don’t pick a major if you can’t at least have show minor involvement in and a big no-no.And the biggest red flag is likely applying with a 3.5 GPA (weighted) meaning for their average admit, in comparison, you will struggle with the academic rigor required. This is higher education and at the highest level.But here is the good news-if you have all of these great qualities in the positive, you’ll will still only have on average an 8% chance for acceptance so be on the top of your game and competitive and you just might get in to your dream school. Dream big, expect little and you’ll have a wonderful college to attend… but make sure you have lots of wonderful choices by applying to schools less competitive too. Good luck.

I would love to know the answer to this question too. I’ve seen different groups try to peg “use of consultants” at the top schools in the past (not specifically Wharton or GSB), and they’ve estimated 20–50%. Huge range, so the answer is that no one knows. People don’t often self-report use of consultants, the schools aren’t able to track it, and the admissions consulting firms also don’t like to self-report to the rest of the industry. So here we are :) Sorry that’s a “non-answer” to your question. Working with a consultant is a very personal thing and people do it for a variety of different reasons. So it’s not one of those things where you can say “everyone I know did it, so I should too”, because that’s not always the case. Hope that helps in some way.
